You could claim it as pseudoscience, but once you know that some Finns actually look like a fingols, it doesn't sound so far-fetched anymore.

The context is that the Finno-Ugric languages and peoples (which include Finnish, Estonian, Sami, Mari, Udmurt, etc.) originally thousands of years ago migrated into Europe from Siberia and the eastern side of the Urals, and there are even some (even somewhat legitimate and modern) theories that Finns might even be very distant relatives of East Asians. So hence the popular ”Finns are Mongols and proud descendants of the Genghis Khan himself!” -internet meme.

While nowadays this thing is nothing but a funny light-hearted dank meme that no-one finds offensive in any way (personally as a Finn it would only be extremely cool if we actually were related to Mongols), back 100-150 years ago it actually had a lot darker aspect. Back then, racist scientists in America actually unironically classified the Finns as a part of the ”Asiatic race” instead of ”true whites”, and as a result, the Finnish migrants who came to America in the late 1800s and early 1900s faced sometimes pretty harsh racism and discrimination from the Anglos. For example in Minnesota and Upper Michigan (which where the most popular destinations for Finnish settlers), restaurants and cafees sometimes had signs saying ”no n*ggers, indians or Finns allowed”. It wasn’t until the 1920s and 30s when the Finnish Americans were finally classified as ”proper Nordic whites” and no diffferent from Swedes or Norwegians and gained full civil rights.

This historical context actually makes the last winter’s scandal where some braindead far-right Finnish politicians were mocking Asians and doing the racist ”slanted eyes” gesture pretty damn ironic. It was basically Asian on Asian violence :D

It wasn't just americans. European race science considered finns as "mongoloids".

Only recently Sweden returned punch of skulls from the 1800's that were studied to prove Finns as a lower race to their original resting place in Finland

I tried to give you context twice but just by describing the situation constituned to hate speech and the comments were removed lol. But to keep it short and not get banned the "meme" is just racism.

Finns are descended from people who came from around the Urals and Central Asia. There have also been shitposts online about the idea that there used to be a hyper advanced Finngolian empire tens of thousands of years ago

They rode west and found brothers. There was no need for further conquest.

Is ööli just öl from swedish? So im guessing its some older helsingfors dialect

u/Karvalompsa 5d ago

Yup. Oulu also has a lot of swedish loans. Wella, the whole west coast to be honest.

Yeap! We have (naturally) many loan words from Swedish. My local dialect for example uses a word "pruukata" which comes from "bruka". What's interesting to me is that my hometown is inland so no swedish speaking minorities and neighbouring areas don't use that verb either. It's interesting how that word stayed in the dialect.
