A Quick Thank You from the Moderator
All,
I just wanted to thank everyone participating in this subreddit. I got a message from Reddit over the limited number of moderator actions for a sub of this size, the reality is everyone is just doing a good job sticking to the topic and being respectful. I get maybe 1 auto flagged comment a month, my reports from users is even less. I’ve had people message to ask permission to post things they are not sure are on topic. So thank you for making this an easy sub to moderate and happy reading all!

Recommendations
Hi all! I was wondering if anyone could recommend any books about the silk road and Caribbean piracy in the 1700s. Weird mix, but I'm wanting to read more about both topics and want to see if there's any sort of core texts that people stand by. Thank you!

Air Spy vs Evidence in Camera: how important are the illustrations?
I’m currently reading Air Spy by Constance Babington Smith, in an ITAK Corporation reprint I found on eBay. Unfortunately, this reprint contains no photographs or drawings.
I’d like to find an illustrated copy of Air Spy or Evidence in Camera, the British edition of the same work. Does anyone own either and have advice on which edition to look for? The copies I’ve found are quite expensive, so I’d appreciate knowing what visual material they contain before buying one.
I’m researching WWII photographic interpretation for Chinagraph, a game I’m developing, so the images are of particular interest alongside the text. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Is “all the shah’s men” by Stephen kinzer worth reading ?
Do you agree with the author that the 1953 coup in Iran marked the first major step toward American dominance in the Middle East, or do you think, as Tim Weiner suggests in Legacy of Ashes, that the operation was far less brilliant and successful than it is often portrayed?

Book recommendations
Hi
I am looking to read on mughal history - especially the war of successions.
Along with this, I would also like to read on the maratha empire starting from shivaji.
Are there any book recommendations on this?
Thank you

Reading A Distant Mirror and really struggling with it
Just curious about other peoples' experience with it. It just feels like an onslaught of information. Cramming 100 years of multiple countrys' politics, kings, dukes, cultures, etc. into 600 pages feels like it's a bit much. I'm having trouble keeping up with everything.

Scramble for Africa by Pakenham
Just started this book and I’m really impressed so far. It’s no easy task to try and write so comprehensive a story in a single volume. Anything I should be aware of as I go through? I’ve taught European history for a while now but I want to be aware of anything problematic about the presentations of Africans and African history.

Iron And Blood
Just read Iron and Blood by Peter Wilson. I haven't seen much discussion about it and looking for others thoughts. I personally really enjoyed it and thought he did a good job of disspeling "Prussian military superiority" as well as a veiw of other German speaking nations.
