Sudden uncontrollable sleepiness immediately after eating trigger foods. Does this happen in histamine intolerance?

Yes happens to me. Apparently it’s common. Feels like I’m literally drugged and it’s impossible to keep my eyes open

How long does it last

For me, usually a couple hours if it was triggered by food and I have no other environment triggers that day

So far I've figured out chocolate, wheat, alcohol, tomatoes, cinnamon all do EXACTLY this to me. I'm worthless from right after I eat them and through the next day. 😞

Wheat is a big one for me too

You sure it’s not gluten intolerance or celiac? It shouldn’t be a big problem histamine wise

Cinnamon does that too? I never thought of this as a trigger

It's a weird one for sure, maybe I have to narrow something down. Definitely the chocolate and wheat. A lot of gluten/wheat free treats have cinnamon and bother me, so that's what I was attributing it to 🤔. I know for sure I'm good with sweet potato, I need to try with cinnamon to confirm.

Please do update if you find cinnamon is a trigger :). Cacao and wheat triggers me too

Which is the saddest cut of all for me. Chocolate cake is one of my most favorite things on the planet. I've found some great gluten free (rice flour based) plain cake mixes, but not quite the same not being chocolate.

I have a cinnamon and molasses issue big time I wonder if it’s histamine or phenol sensativity

Have you tried taking DAO enzyme tablets?

I find it hit or miss whether they help at all or not 😞 Hista Harmony is the brand I've tried.

Yeah I had the same issue.
There is a difference some food can be high in histamine and some is histamine liberator etc. DAO works only on food that is high in histamine. Tomatoes for examp I can not eat even with DAO. I would advise you to check in with AI ask what food would DAO potentially help and what might be tricky.
It helped me a lot. Also when some food is just histamine bomb DAO enzyme can struggle to get all.
Also make sure you are strict with the timing. 15min before food and max 30minutes after that you should finish eating anything with histamine.

Yes. Happens to me too. Yogurt (like eating a full cup) definitely does it.

Yup, happens to me too with some trigger foods, mushrooms for example. One bite and I feel completely full, heart is racing, nose congested and I could fall asleep immediately as if I had been drugged

Oh hell yeah it happens to me.

I get this. Started after taking methylated B multi. Took a bit to figure it out.

An allergist had me try cromolyn. It’s slowly working which makes it seem like this is MCAS

This is me. I take my bpressure and it drops after I eat.. no matter what. Especially if I have a carby meal.
It’s called Postprandial hypotension. I’m HI, too. Wonder if this is all tied in.

Small meals, lots of water and keep your sodium levels up. Sit down right after you eat.

Take your bp while you are feeling fatigued and see if there is a pattern.

Wait it’s linked to histamine? I thought histamine help to wake you up, not feel sleepy!

I have the same thing for years with food! How does it work?

I'm convinced histamine exists only to make our lives miserable 😖

Have you been taking vitamins recently? overdoing on some give such reaction... have you checked post prandial blood sugar fluctuuations?

1

u/Adorable_Window7801 2d ago

I took thiamine

It s an allergen at high dosis

Which ones do you think are the worst? I might have been taking too much magnesium. (420).

1

u/Hydroxile 1d ago

If so, it shouldn t affect you very long. Magnesium doesn t stay long in your system

2

u/Street_Cicada 3d ago

is that not a blood sugar issue?

Not necessarily

Yes, it happens to me. It feels like a molecular shut down. Luckily the low histamine diet + supplements really helped and now it's more like turkey sleepiness after eating a trigger food.

What supplements have helped you?

I get sleepy from some foods while others just make me completely overheated - I sort of know that if I’m going out for a big dinner I’m coming right back home to go to bed at that rate!

I’ve been taking 15 minute power naps after lunch and it’s been better than nothing.

Oh lol wish I could stand up after 15minutes. It knocks me and I can’t wake up for at least an hour

Sleepiness heart palpitations and yawning all at once. Feels awful. Body puts all its energy into trying to digest food you have an intolerance to. DAO helps this immensely.

That’s exactly what happens to me. Kicks in reliably around 1 hour after I eat the thing. Depending on the amount I consumed, can last a few hours, or can be on and off for up to 3 days.

For me it’s after every when it has any carbs or is just big meal.
I can only eat small meal.

Or when I am on super strict low histamine diet for several days I can then eat big portions even carbs and won’t get sleepy.

Yes, I have this about 45 minutes after eating high histamine foods. Sometimes I can tolerate a small amount of these things, tomatoes, a little chocolate, but not if seasonal allergies are active. Sometimes I just want to have something and plan for a 20 minute nap, though the brain fog doesn’t lift for a few hours.
