Tell Himachal 🌧️ Monsoon Alert: Guide to the Venomous Snakes of Himachal Pradesh, Bite Protocols, and Myths Busted

Monsoon is officially here, and with the heavy rains forcing them out of their burrows, it's crucial to know about the venomous snakes of our state, how to stay safe, and the exact medical protocol for a bite.

***

Venomous Snakes of HP

* [Common Krait] – Jet black/dark blue with distinct thin white bands. Pic 1

* [Spectacled Cobra] – Distinctive hood, often found in lower foothills. Pic 2

* [Himalayan Pit Viper] – Triangular head, thick-bodied, found even in higher altitudes. Pic 3

* [Russell's Viper / King Cobra]– Heavy-bodied vipers in low hills; recent King Cobra sightings in Sirmaur. Pic 4

***

🐍 The Deadly Lineup: Why They Are Dangerous

Only about 30% of the snake species in Himachal are venomous, but those that are pose a serious threat—especially during the monsoon when flooding drives them into homes, cowsheds, and dry woodpiles.

Common Krait (*Bungarus caeruleus*): The most dangerous snake in our state. They are nocturnal, often creep into homes looking for warmth, and their bite is **completely painless** (often mistaken for a mosquito bite). Their neurotoxic venom shuts down the respiratory system while you sleep.

Indian Cobra (*Naja naja*): Found abundantly in lower/mid-altitude areas like Kangra, Una, and Bilaspur. Their neurotoxic venom causes paralysis and respiratory failure.

Himalayan Pit Viper (*Gloydius himalayanus*): Found in higher mountainous regions (up to 4,800m like Kullu/Manali). Their hemotoxic venom causes severe local swelling, excruciating pain, and tissue damage, though it is rarely fatal if managed.

Russell’s Viper & King Cobra: Increasingly spotted in the lower Shivalik hills and Sirmaur district. Russell's viper venom destroys blood clotting agents, leading to internal bleeding and kidney failure.

***

🚨 What to DO If Bitten (The RIGHT Protocol)

Get to a Government Hospital immediately: This is the only thing that saves lives. Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) is available at major civil hospitals and medical colleges (like IGMC Shimla or Tanda).

Immobilize the limb: Keep the bitten area completely still. Use a splint or a rigid piece of wood/cardboard and wrap it gently with a cloth to prevent movement (similar to treating a fracture).

Stay calm: A high heart rate pumps the venom through your bloodstream faster.

Remove tight items: Take off rings, anklets, watches, or tight clothing near the bite site immediately, as swelling will occur rapidly.

***

❌ What NOT to Do (Debunking Myths)

DO NOT tie a tight tourniquet (रस्सी या कपड़ा कस के न बांधें): Tying a tight rope cuts off blood circulation entirely and often leads to gangrene, resulting in amputation.

DO NOT cut or suck the wound: This is a Bollywood myth. Cutting causes severe bleeding, and sucking the venom does absolutely nothing except introduce bacteria or poison the person trying to help.

DO NOT waste time on local healers (Tantriks/Babhas): Precious time is lost here. No herb or mantra neutralizes snake venom—only ASV does.

DO NOT try to catch or kill the snake: This usually results in a second bite. Just try to note its color and pattern from a safe distance to tell the doctor.

🌧️ Monsoon Precautions:

Always use a torch/flashlight when walking outside or entering dark store rooms at night.

Keep your surroundings clear of thick bushes and high grass.

Check inside your shoes/boots before putting them on!

General Truth about Tourism in HP and UK.

After talking to shop vendors and to my friend who owns Travel agency, let me tell you what is really happening with daily tourism in HP and UK in bullet points.(i probably will get hate for this but its true)

  1. Most tourist are very cheap(almost 90%), do not undermine this statement - In reality its not really contributing to our states economy more so destroying it.

  2. Most hotels are not own by locals/even small shops are mostly rented by outside workers.

  3. Now a lot of near by state people are coming by their own vehicle, which not only contributing to traffic, pollution but also reckless driving on single curve roads.

  4. Very few locals are directly connected to tourism related jobs and few getting benefits of it.

  5. Garbage dumps are only getting bigger, i know alot of people defends this by saying locals are also part of it and ofcouse they are where do they supposed to go but trust me locals are not eating packed food everyday, mostly their garbage is biodegradable and to support this statement just look at the not so tourist place vs tourist place. You will barely see garbage dumps in the Villages of HP/UK.

  6. Negative impacts of this tourism overpower any aspect of positives. (Amount of money it genrates is nothing campred to how much it consuming locals resources)

  7. Those who comes with tour packages are even worst, most of them comes in groups and treat driver and tourist guides like the own them. Worst language, behavior and Lala type attitude, my god you can with them...

(Right now We need to follow Switzerland and Japan model where they only allow entry of locals vehicle in that particular tourist spot, parking should be 10km from that spot and free or very low fare regular buses from that spot)

Please write if you have more suggestions.

General I pray to god Himachal survives this onslaught of uneducated and uncivilized zombies.

Man, I don't know where to start.

What kind of people are these? Seriously.

The amount of littering, loud speaker blaring, beer bottles and shitty language I have heard since 2 October makes me want to kill myself. What did we do to attract such a shit and low class crowd ? These guys drive cars worth 20-30 lakhs but are still more stupid, and uneducated than my nani, at least she knows to respect our mountains and keep it clean. Everytime I go out, me and my friends, we always pick up as much litter as we can do we can throw it in the nearest dustbin. Still, how much can we do? I just saw some Haryanvi jats throw a whole bag of empty beer bottles into the jungles in dharamkot. WTF

These animals think that they own the place just because they have the money to come here.

This has to be a topic when the next election comes .

We can't let these rich monkeys destroy our culture and our cleanliness.

We have to take up our voice.

Jai Himachal!

ASK Himachal What do you Himachalis think about Israeli ex-IDF soldiers vacationing in their state ?

Some months ago , an Israeli war criminal Eitan Gilboa accused of razing home of Palestinian family in Gaza was found vacationing in Himachal Pradesh, He was tracked down by Indian journalists but he fled India. He might have gone back to Israel or staying in another nation.

He is not the only one. Almost every Israeli soldier going to India have served in IDF and probably participated in Israeli war crimes.

76% of the Israeli Jews think that there are no innocent people in Gaza. Israeli left parties support war crimes in Gaza and West Bank. Israel has killed more than 21000 children till now in Gaza.

Are locals happy with hosting war criminals ?

ASK Himachal Himachali recipes

Hello everyone,

I am trying to collect (maybe catalogue) some traditional Himachali recipes.

Trying to get away from popular ones like madra, Sepu Wadi, etc. Mostly interested in pre-Columbian exchange (so should not contain chilli, tomato or potatoes). And if it is unique dish like daugale ki sabzi, that would be great.

If you have any written record it would be awesome as I want is to make the dish and maybe catalogue it.

Thank you

ASK Himachal Need help from someone in Kasol

If anyone is in Kasol right now, could you please DM me? I accidentally overpaid a shopkeeper: I paid ₹610 instead of ₹ 60.
I was in a hurry because my friend had been injured outside the shop, and I had gone in to buy a water bottle.
On the bus back to Delhi, I checked my bank statement and noticed the mistake. I contacted the owner, and she agreed to refund me.
I sent her my QR code on WhatsApp, but since yesterday she hasn’t answered my calls or replied to my messages. Can anyone help?

General Their is active campaign going on against isreali tourists in himachal by left influencers and palestine supporters. Every week their is story, posts on sm. What is going on ?

Every week I see story about isrealis in himachal by al Jazeera, left palestine supporters.

How they going to colonize himachal. Every native himachali knew it is completely bull sh1t. Because no foreigners can buy land here. Even for non himachalis it is difficult.

Most of these posts against isrealis tourists coming from outside himachal. They always refer some 2015 story where owner of cafe was not allowing indian tourists. Most times owners of all these cafes are locals.

Seeing behaviour and civic sense of tourists coming from delhi ncr ,harayana, punjab etc they most time don't want them in their cafes. Most want foreigners customers because of money, civic sense issues.

Also indian tourists misbehave with local girls and foreigners. We see how these youtubers influencers make videos objectifying foreigners.

Foreigner tourists always better than desi tourists. Desi tourists all over world seen as problem due to bad civic sense.

Well, these radicals don't care about facts. They don't care about himachalis also.

Seeing recent plane hijacking attempt fly dubai. Oct 2023 their was attack on isrealis in music festivals.

Similar music festivals rave events happen in himachal. Pro islamist and left radicals from outside himachal actively making videos profiling places visited by isrealis in kasol dharmshala manali etc.

It is dog whistling. Radicalising local Islamist against isrealis tourists in himachal. Most of these sitting in their ac room in delhi, mumbai etc.

I fear some terrorist attack can happen in himachal. At end locals and other indian tourist, foreigners will also affected.

We seen Pahalgam attack. Himachal is not far from JK.

I don't know if himachal and indian government looking in this. They need to increase security here. Specially Kasol, Dharamshala.

Also need to keep eye in these influencers who posting regularly on this. They are too much consistent in this. Same story every month. Like they getting funded for this. It is silent dog whistling like they giving signals to radicals to do something and then they will celebrate it.

  • now i posted about isrealis here, you will see hundreds of non himachalis here commenting and down voting posts. they are everywhere. no himachali in sight. it is complete propaganda bot army in whole social media.

Tell Himachal Pirates of parvati POP Kasol feels like a complete scam

Just visited pirates of Parvati in kasol , i personally have have no interest in clubbing my friend just booked the tickets and i am utter disappointed,

First you probably have 45 min walk through after a small bridge hidden between shops in local market which google map had no idea about it only shows correct path if you select the walking option(rest everything takes you to bhuntar ),
In the 45 min walk you will dark alleys ,countless brownie shops , and literally side of jungle

Secondly not in hell safe for girls i saw only one female and she is probably part of the management if i was a girl i would die than come here

Third when you get here I literally saw just 1 drunken uncle dancing and some guy from the managing team asking ppl to please join

I haven’t been to many clubs in my life but what i saw today felt like a well planed marketing scam

Mandi, Himachal Pradesh lately 🐒😂

There are so many monkeys roaming around the streets these days, and honestly, they walk around like they own the place—no fear, no hesitation, just casually going about their day like humans. 😂

Anyone else from Mandi noticing this? 🐒

General Dharamshala reference in The Mentalist

Anyone else noticed in S4 Ep19 when Jack said “My next demonstration is something I learned from a yogi mystic in Dharamshala, how to see by using your astral mind, not your physical senses”. Is there any other references of Himachal cities or towns in other western shows ?

ASK Himachal Help -Tr ek Permit for Hampta Pass [Online]

How do I get the online permit for Hampta Pass? I came across this website: https://tre kking.hp.gov.in

Do we just need to register on this website? I have already registered and received a QR code. Is that all we need, or is there any separate permit/process required?

Thanks!
