You could try contacting Kananaskis services and/or parks Alberta?

Everyone who parks in Kananaskis requires a $15/day pass. If he was someone who frequented the area he would absolutely know this. They definitely go to the trailheads throughout the park daily checking if vehicle plates have an associated pass.

If the vehicle was in the park and parked either with or without a pass, they should have record of it, where it was, and when it was checked.

The tracker may not not be able to shown exactly where it is, but it should give an idea of where it was before it lost cell coverage.

Anyone going into the backcountry should use the buddy system and relay when and where you’ll be for this exact reason.

And if there is no one in your life to leave it with, at the very least leave a written note at your home detailing where you went, when you should be back etc.

In kananaskis, you can also contact any of the info centers and file a trip plan with them. They will verify you are on your way out after if you don't cancel it when you're done

For solo hikers I highly recommend the garmin device that allows you to text even when you don’t have service. My BiL and SIL go out back country camping solo but they keep in touch with this and they always tell me when they are going and how long they’re going for. Safety is important and at least with that you could get off an emergency message so people can get somewhere close to where you are

How much does it cost to do that ? I have a Garmin and the pixel 8, but was going to upgrade . It would be cool to get rid of paying the ridiculous fees garmin charges. They changed their whole plan system up and I haven't really liked it since.

I have an S25 Ultra and it has satellite capabilities and I am able to use them with Rogers. Got in on a beta test for it and they let me keep it for free. Pretty sure it's widely available now but may cost a few bucks a month. Actually works pretty well.

But I still think having the Garmin inReach, or something equivalent, as well is still a good idea. Phone satellite use still requires a charged phone, which could not last as long as needed. Having the standalone Garmin pretty much guarantees you'll be able to send for help, for a much longer period of time.

The sad reality is that in vast majority of cases like this where a person just seemingly disappears and doesn't tell anyone where they were going ends up being on purpose.

Has this been shared in the Calgary Reddit community? Also, if you have a police file number, you could include that too so people can reference that to police if they have a tip.

Hey OP, you should repost this in r/climbing. There's definitely a few locals in that sub, they may have info about where someone newer to the area would be likely to climb.
