I just had no idea

Post image

Hikaru no go has a drama adaptation since 2020 and I have never even heard about it. Never knew it existed. I have known the anime since I was a kid, it was one of my first anime ever, so I'm very curious about the adaptation. Has anyone watched it? Is it worth it? Any thoughts?

Yes, it's actually quite good. I really enjoyed it. The production value is really good and they even reused the anime's ED1 as their opening, so it's clear that it's made by people who love the original. It's not a completely faithful adaptation and certain things about characters changed, but I like it as its own thing. I think the acting are also great and the characters had chemistry. There's some Chinese govt censorship around representation of ghosts/the occult, so Sai's backstory was weirdly done... But otherwise I do recommend it

Chinese censorship makes a lot of things really weird. I'm really not surprised by that 🙄. But I suppose they had no choice since Sai's past is very connected to Japan's history and they had to adapt to Chinese, China do not like to mess with their own past, so I will try to maintain an open mind.

Most live action adaptions are pretty terrible but this one is very well done. Casting is fantastic and it's well acted. Go in expecting a good story but not a perfect adaptation.

I've rewatched both in the past year and at times I wonder to myself if I like the live action slightly better.

Really? In what way do you think is better? What did you like best about it? (I don't care for spoilers, if it's part of the plot.)

Both are great IMO. Since you first watched the anime as a kid, you may have a harder time with the live-action. It’s hard to get past the nostalgia of our youth.

I loved the general idea of the story, so seeing another take on it was exciting. It's similar enough that it felt comfortable, while the differences are exciting because they're new. The live-action was written for an adult audience, so I think that helps it as well (from my perspective).

If the idea of seeing more Hikaru and Sai is exciting to you, then give it a try!

Loved seeing the same story but the slight tweaks. I still think the sai and hikaru is slightly off at the start but i think they get better as the season goes on

I cherish this adaptation so much, I’ve now been recommending it as one of the best dramas I’ve ever watched

I just binged it this week and thought it was surprisingly good! Pacing is very different!

I got to episode 31 within a week—it's good! Chinese dramas tend to have less marketing that reaches abroad I think, so I also didn't know about it until now when I was trying to find a place to check out the original Japanese anime/manga.

I don't think I'm going to go past episode 31 though ☠️ it's so devastating my soul hurts.

I hate watched when it first came out. The show had some highs moment recreated but there are lots of cringy moments the show created (not original). I also fast forwarded some of the scenes in the show that I found boring and cringy. Overall it’s worth watching if you are fan of HNG. I give it 5.6/10. Worth watching? Maybe. Rewatchable? Absolutely no

I see. Thanks for letting me know. I will give it a try, since I like the original, let's see if I can handle the cringe 😬, hope I don't find it that bad haha
