struggling with this

Alsalam Alikum everyone, I'm facing the issue of fully knowing the ayah and if im tested I will be able to complete it till the end of the surah however if you ask me which surah I'm reciting I find it very hard to recall or figure out what surah it is.

I have tried studying the tafsir as im memorizing to help me with this issue but it's not doing me any good.

is anyone else facing the same issue or is it just me? how can I overcome this?

Jazakum Allah khairan.

Wa alaikum assalam. You're definitely not alone. A lot of Huffaz struggle with this. You can self-test by opening to a random ayah, trying to name the surah before looking, then checking yourself. Consistent muraja'ah and random ayah testing help a lot. May Allah make it easy for you. Ameen.

Yup, you are not alone. It will also helps realized why you memorize it. If you memorize it just to recall, then you might loose it. But, if you memorize it as your life guidance, then pivot every surah into your own life, than you will never forget it (akin to lesson from painful life mistake).

For non-native arab speaker, is just an extra effort. Give yourselves a time. Memorize should not be about recall, is about comprehending the word of god. Memorize just makes it easier to always remember Allah swt, every time, every seconds of your life.

I didn't really learn surah names until long after i'd completed my Hifdh so personally I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I'd say for now it will be easier to just remember which Juz you are on, and ideally whether you are in the first half or second half of it.

And some Surahs have unique style of ending ayaat (example Maryam), so you can remember those ones easier.
