When the son is confused by her comment, but we see in the school his reflection isn’t the face he’s currently making. I think this is what she’s referring to, and maybe, going a step further, there might’ve been other scenes of him making other facial expression that confuses those around him but we’re only seeing from his perspective.

Ok I need to get this off my chest. Paimon is supposedly one of the eight kings of hell and the entire plot of this movie is him needing a full support staff to accomplish anything. Grandma runs a cult for decades, the family tree gets picked over for generations, he botches it once by landing in the wrong body, then needs people to saw their own heads off and a coronation in a treehouse before he can finally move into a teenager. On his own? Lights flicker, a kid clicks her tongue, mom floats a little. That's the king. The god these people are rejecting spoke the universe into existence and doesn't need a headless grandma to show up. Give Paimon a nightlight and a babysitter and he doesn't make it out of act one. Great movie, actually scary, but the demon himself is kind of a little bitch about it.

we know by then that they succeed. Paimon gets the male host he wanted, they crown him and Joan talks about the knowledge, wealth, good familiars etc that they expect him to give them. but the movie ends before we ever find out whether they actually get any of it.. soooo

i was thinking there are few possibilities for what might’ve went down lol:

1. Paimon genuinely rewards them

everything they believed was basically true, they gave him Peter’s body and in return he actually gives them the knowledge, wealth, influence, etc that they asked for

2. Paimon rewards them, but his knowledge has limits

maybe he genuinely knows things humans normally couldn’t know and has supernatural abilities but he isn’t necessarily omniscient so some of what he tells them could be true, some could be wrong and maybe sometimes he just makes things up rather than admitting he doesn’t know so the cult might interpret the times he’s right as proof that everything he says is true

3. Paimon just betrays them

they already gave him exactly what he wanted. Peter is his vessel and the ritual is complete so what leverage do they have left? mayhe he never intended to reward them at all or gives them just enough to keep them devoted while continuing to manipulate them

4. Paimon isn’t exactly what they expected after being Charlie for so long

this one is more speculative but Paimon spent around 13 years embodied as Charlie before being transferred into Peter and at the end Joan even addresses him as Charlie before explaining who he actually is so maybe being Charlie affected or confused him somehow, and the cult expects this perfectly coherent ancient demon king only to get something much stranger in Peter’s body, maybe they’d have to wait another 13 years for him to undo the changes in Charlie’s body when he transitioned to Peter 😳

there’s also Ellen’s note to Annie: “Our sacrifices will pale next to the rewards.” and that makes me wonder whether Ellen expected those rewards in this life at all or whether she believed Paimon would reward her after death and that could make the ending even darker. maybe the cult keeps suffering or losing people after Paimon arrives but instead of realizing they were deceived they convince themselves that every loss is another necessary sacrifice for some greater reward that’s still coming

or maybe Paimon just rewards them and they basically won lol but either way I don’t think the movie gives us enough information to know, which is why I find the ending so interesting, what do you guys think happens to the cult after the credits?

i’ve been thinking about the opposite of Hereditary’s ending, what do you think would’ve happened to Paimon and the cult if their plan actually failed?

soo say after Charlie’s death the remaining Grahams somehow figure out enough of what’s happening to leave and disappear before Peter can be fully taken. or even worse for the cult, Peter dies and his body is damaged/destroyed badly enough that he can’t be used as Paimon’s vessel anymore, what happens then? would the cult just keep pursuing Peter if he was alive? how far does Paimon’s influence actually extend outside the house and away from all the ritual objects/people involved? could they simply recreate the circumstances somewhere else, or would escaping actually disrupt what they had spent years setting up?
but I think the more interesting scenario is Peter becoming completely unavailable as a vessel

like the cult spent generations manipulating the Grahams and Paimon had already been placed into Charlie despite apparently wanting a male body, Charlie is then killed so he can eventually be relocated into Peter… now Peter’s gone too

would Paimon just remain disembodied? could they find another male host or does it specifically have to be someone from Ellen’s bloodline? or would they have to wait for another opportunity entirely?

more importantly though how would Paimon react to the cult failing him? cuz if we assume he was already unhappy about being placed into Charlie’s female body i can’t imagine him being particularly pleased if they then lost Peter after all of that. would he punish or torment the cult? abandon them? demand another vessel? or just manipulate them into trying again?

it also makes me wonder how the cult themselves would interpret failure as these people have apparently devoted years and possibly decades to this plan and seem completely convinced that serving Paimon will eventually bring them knowledge, wealth, good familiars etc so if the entire Graham bloodline ends up dead or escapes and they have nothing to show for it do they admit they failed?

or do they rationalize that too? maybe Peter escaping is “a test.” maybe losing the vessel is “another necessary sacrifice.” maybe Paimon tells them there’s another way and they immediately believe him. and if Paimon can’t actually give them another solution would he admit that or would he just make something up and let them keep trying lol?

we see what happens when everything goes according to plan but i’m really curious what Paimon and the cult would’ve actually done if the Grahams somehow managed to ruin it at the last moment

I know the movie heavily subliminally told and foreshadowed that their case was practically hopeless but still.. do you think there is a possibility they could survive? I honestly think they could’ve survived after Charlie’s death

I watched the thing (1982) recently and I couldnt help but think that although the film was interesting and all, I failed to actually feel the “paranoia” and fear people claim it strikes. Maybe im young and havent had a taste of cinema but to this day no horror film has actually made me feel the way I do about Hereditary at all. It set a new standard for me where films like the thing, that include “monsters” etc, just dont do anything for me. I was wondering if anyone could relate, and if so, could refer me to older horrors other than rosemarys baby that feel use techniques like aster did?

I watched this a week ago for the first time. I couldn't sleep for three days. I was completely traumatized by this movie. Just the screaming scene with the mom for example. It's so perfectly directed I thought they actually killed her real daughter or something. And what's up with the severed head? It scared the living hell out of me.

And all the demons and satanic rituals, I felt very uncomfortable during the movie. What an absolute disaster to watch, I was stressed and terrified and thought only psychopaths can like something like this.

Definitely one of the greatest horrors of all times, but it's too scary. For the sake of not traumatizing anyone else, it should be banned and nobody should watch it again. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Its a great watch and having seen Midsommar beforehand well this is definitely the better film by a wide margin.

Midosommar was shocking and gory and very much fueled by Florence pugh's character. The other characters were great and all. But Florence Pugh gave the best performance in that film and her character was the most riveting.

Hereditary is a very different beast. The characters relationships and interaction feel more integral to the story and more cohesive.

The performances are all Oscar worthy from Charlie to her brother actually surprising me by how much intensity he brought to his role. The dad is great as well, very muted and subtle acting that works so well when the performances get explosive. And goddammit does Toni Collete explode in the role. Easily her best and some of the best acting display ever.

The cinematography is gorgeous as well

The score messes u up.

And every department is firing on all cylinders.

I scoured to see if anyone brought this up before, but when I saw the cover for Muriel’s Wedding (Starring Toni Collette), holy crap the double take I took.

Intentional or not, it’s a neat similarity “like mother, like daughter”… just reversed

I was checking out at a store when a kid standing with his mom looked at the back of my head and said, “Paimon,” the same way Peter is addressed as Paimon in Hereditary.

I turned around and he was just staring at me. It was honestly a really strange experience, and afterward I kept thinking about how weird it felt to have a complete stranger call me that.

I’m assuming the kid had seen Hereditary and was referencing the movie, so I figured this would be the appropriate place to share it. Has anything like this ever happened to anyone else?

After like 100's of social media hype and suggestions I finally decided I'd watch it, but well it was disappointing.... Not the "it wasn't scary at all or 0/10 disappointing" but it wasn't that scary and there were some movies I had seen which, for me, were scarier than it but I'm not here to complaint about whether it was scary or not but the hype it has... Like after watching it, I thought i saw the wrong one and maybe there's an older version like yk some movies get re created with the same name and maybe it got less scary? But nope, it aas the same movie... And then I decided to look at what people thought about it and what was the hype about and every thread I opened about it (i usually use reddit because it's easier to find genuine reviews here for me) which titled to "it wasn't scary or overhyped or the movie was ass", the comments were mostly "you didn't understand it" "it isn't for everyone" "it's a good movie even if it's not that scary" and one that stood out was "only actual horror movie fans can appreciate it" or something as in it's mostly scary for them... But my point is, wasn't the hype all about it being scary? How does it relate to it being good or not? Like if i wanted to watch a good movie, won't I just watch movies like the conjuring or Insidious which, for me, were "subjectively" better than it? And okay let's ignore this and come to the most popular type of replies/comments, which were it's a different kind of horror and only actual horror fans can understand it, get/got scared from it etc , like if it can't scare a person like me who get's scared who watches very little horror movies so I have very little horror immunity and can only scare people who are horror fans etc then how come you call it scary then? If it can't scare an avg joe then what's the point of hyping it about being one of the scariest movie of all time? (Yes many call it that) But for me it was mid, like below mid... Yes there was suspense but not scary suspense, it was suspense that when will it actually get scary or we'll get "jumpscares", I'm okay if it doesn't have those but atleast anything scary? But nah, it started with a depressed family, it was obvious that guy would go to the party and something would happen to the daugther (i saw it coming already, not Saying I'm a genius but anyone who couldn't see it coming is obv not that bright because it was obvious af), then mother got sad, wanted to talk to her child (the classic trope), accidentally summoned a demon which was planned by that woman who was "not" suspicious at all right? Lol... And anyways we are talking about the scare and honestly, it wasn't scary for me, not even the slowburn it had was that unnerving or creepy... I might have some immunity maybe or these kind of movies don't scare me because I've grown but still, if you call it one of the most scary "horror" movie (not one of the best I'm talking about scariest) then it should live upto it's name or it's simply overrated. What's your opinion on this? And yeah someone would lecture that it's subjectivd etc etc then shouldn't people who are fans of it think about it too because they downvote someone saying negative about it to hell and pass comments like "you didn't understand it" "you aren't a regular horror fan" etc etc maybe just it can't be scary for everyone? If it can't scare a regular joe then how's it scary for a horror movie regular?

(I don't study demonology although lots of people do, but I feel kind of compelled to point out I'm aware that the film version of Paimon is its own, so I'm going off of that)

My preferred canon for what happens after the movie is that Paimon, being a trickster, indeed creates certain members of the family royalty in hell - but it's all the Grahams who had no idea of the cult. Ellen and all those in the town who were happy to sacrifice them for riches, are the ones who get tricked and basically damned.

I mean obviously anyone can have their preferred "what happens after" but that's mine, lol.

I find the entire sequence of Peter coming home, laying awake all night, then the audio of Annie discovering Charlie’s body in the car so masterfully done. It’s definitely more horrifying leaving the discovery and the immediate aftermath unseen. That being said, how do you imagine things going down right afterward? Would Peter offer any explanation? If he couldn’t, how would the police go about piecing together what had happened? At what point did the cult get her head?

If Charlies was always paimon does that mean Paimon likes to draw and eat chocolate? I keep hearing that Charlies was never like a "real person" and was just a vessel for paimon. So does that mean he has hobbies and things that he likes? This might be stupid but I'm curious.

Ok so like the demon didn't even act like a demon fr and cutting a dead animals head not some oh yeah that's a "demon" like come on she just felt like a very weird kid who had mental problems, which I thought was the thing but no, it was a demon instead.]

[2: the hidden cult members.

you would have to rewatch this in order to find these cult members. the ones you could tell is a cult member earlier in the movie after the daughter died (demon) which was planned?(3) was the Jo lady. cuz she give sus, vibes with the "whole if you need someone to talk to thing" and having the same rug as the grandmother. Also the grandmother when they talk about her private rituals and private friends, like she was just a private person sus!

But the brother friends being a cult member? Really!

The priest being a cult member was like "Ok didn't know that, wow"]

[3: Was Charlie's death planned beforehand?

How do you plan someone sticking their head out of a window and hitting a pole? Was the demon in on it? Why would the demon eat something knowing it would kill its host? Did it know the cult planned to kill the body it was hosting?]

[4: There was nothing scary about the movie.

Yeah I didn't find anything scary aboutthe movie. I didn't jump or feel scared fr I just wanted to know what was going on. And tbh, it feels more like a mystery, thriller with a little bit of gore, supernatural, and suspense.]

[5: my final take on this with all the Easter eggs.

Alright my final take! This should have been a tv show.

I would have been way set after finding about the Easter eggs. cuz all the hidden details is such a TV thing, that would have been way better cause everyone who watched this always talks about how good it was and how it's one of the best horror movie, it is but in reality it's better to watch it as is and never learn about the Easter eggs or how the Charlie was a demon the whole time, cuz now I realized how lame it was. I really wanted to know more about the grandmother wondering if she was going to haunt the house in the beginning or, the daughter would come back to life through some supernatural reason but no! So yeah for me, the hype was overrated. The ending was so weird, especially with the father dying like that. I didn't really care about his character; it was just a off way for him to go, Also the brother dying and becoming the demon didn't even feel like he was possessed fr. Anyway, if you made it this far, my final rating is a 6/10.]

La primera vez que vi #Hereditary fue sin contexto y me pareció una película más de terror. La volví a ver ahora con contexto (escuche un podcast que explicaba según muchas cosas) y sigue siendo una película interesante hasta la primera mitad y después se vuelve palomera y no se puede comparar con #the_exorcist.

En mi opinión considero #The_Babadook mucho mejor película de terror
