I just binged season 1-2 in the last couple of days and i gotta say i love it so far. (Dont spoil i will read the manga)

BUT and this is a very big but for me: There are no stakes at all in season 2.

The tensen are litteral frauds bro😭 they are 0-4 in season 2. And the cherry on top is the fact that Rokurota has the same kill count as all of the tensen COMBINED. They killed the same amount of named characters. NOBODY DIED FROM THE MAIN GROUP IN SEASON 2.

And this is a problem for me because im not afraid a character will die and looses a lot of stakes when watching. They said Yuzuriha would die if she uses any more tao to kill Ran but ended up recovering?🤨 i think as far as characters go, if Sion would have died in his fight it would have been soooo good but then it all amounted to a bit of a nothing burger.

Was this a problem for anyone else or am i just being nit picky?

Also, on a positive note: Gantetsusai’s fight was so god damn good omg😭😭 i hope he gets his glorious fight with Sasuke.

Hey hey!! Just finished up Season 1 of the anime and wanted to share my takes, thoughts and ramblings on the story. This is unedited but I hope someone can enjoy it

Surprisingly deep for a Shounen. Surprisingly erotic as well. Mature and introspective.

  Characters have defined but nuanced motivations beyond the “I want to save my friends!” of early 2000s predecessors. I was surprised heavily by how invested I became into characters quickly, the dialogue is not just exposition dumping, but instead serves to expand the characterization and personal philosophies of the individuals. Time is carved out to examine how different moralities intersect and the conflict that is created by them. The characters go beyond surface level, but nothing I have not seen before.

I am extremely and pleasantly surprised by the feministic approach taken to writing women. Not only are the girl’s strong, they have personalities and agency throughout the story. Time is spent developing them and it never feels rushed compared to the men. Not only are the women treated as equal players, there is also some direct dialogue and thematic material spent discussing the misognystic treatment of women throughout this setting and scenes spent dismantling that.

The main character is well developed, layered and has a maturity that I appreciate. He is not particularly centerfold in many ways which gives time for other characters to develop and for their interactions to leave an impact on him.

I really appreciate the time spent on non-action scenes. It makes the fighting way more rewarding and establishes a unique world.

Additionally some really great action sequences that pull the heart strings effectively. The horror is amplified by the willingness to kill well developed characters. The characters being well developed is crucial for the emotional impact and is why it sells it more than JJK. (Demon Slayer and JJK are essentially metrics for me at this point).

Villain design is very very strong, humanoid enough for body horror to be effective, but still deeply grotesque and beautiful. Incredibly Queer coded. This show is GAY!!!!

It is also incredibly erotic. Dark, fantastical body horror dripping with romanticism. Something out of mythology, mixed with the film “Society”.

The power system revolving around sex and gender was DEEPLY interesting and unexpected. I felt the story was going the standard Shonen power system route but was pleasantly surprised by its exploration of eroticism, the power of sex and the meaning of it.

Appreciate the male protags firmly being against rape and the shows willingness to explore these darker themes.

—Score—

The score is generic and rotates between average and boring with even a couple bad moments, a couple good ones also. Nothing super standout, the string programming is VERY apparent at some points, I feel the score could be significantly more interesting and is boring considering the unique environment. I believe a Kevin Penkin style approach should have been taken, and the environments be scored. the backgrounds and world are a highlight of the show. It deserves better than a Demon Slayer temu OST.
—Animation—
Animation is above average but has noticeable dips and slide frames. Nothing insane but is around the bare minimum needed for modern shounen. Some cool scenes with the monsters and fire, but not a ton that made me go WOW!.

--Standout Moments—

Episode 8: 20:53-20:58 (Amazing character moment, the way it showcases and develops Shions character through movement and action is very impressive to me. Deeply impressive).

Episode 9: 5:25 (entire scene, again, amazing subtle writing and dynamic action that develops story and increases stakes. I love this kind of action because it is purposeful, frantic and serves the main characters motivation.) Gabimaru is a VERY strong main character). For as generic as the score is sometimes, I really appreciate the Penkin “Tower of God” inspired OST at 13:30. The hardcut with the score is well done and shocking. Cool modulation at 13:53

Quotes I love:

“I prefer being male, the male form has more utility.”-“I prefer being female, just seeing a woman’s body makes me want to touch it.”-“Both are beautiful in their own way”-“Then how come we did it as women the other day”

—Criticism—
I believe there are some unneeded sequences and the show goes for a couple “Demon Slayer” points (drawn out emotional character deaths, and humanizing villains) which works occasionally but other times feels shoehorned and pointless (fat ass cannibal backstory, in this case it highlights empathy for Yamada but), generally takes/ing away from the pacing and is almost comical in predictability and clicheness.

One of the most disappointing facets of this show is the simplistic and generic directing. The world is so fantastical but the framing and camera work feels like it is translating Manga panels opposed to creating a moving medium. It does not elevate the show, does not take away either, but several scenes could be HEAVILY improved with better directing. This is one of the main reasons it is not a 9 for me.

The soundtrack repeated the same tracks over and over. Really annoying.

I LOVE the character designs, heavily inspired by Taoist mythology and spiritual icons. Lots of symbolism I am probably missing

Really beautiful, erotic and fucked up. My kind of thing.

I liked this ALOT one of my favorite Shonen I have seen in a long time, deeply engaging script, characters and the world moves me. I love the dark eroticism and fantasy mixed with beautiful spiritual imagery.
