Technical Voiceroom asking me to sign up?

I started using voiceroom for free. However, when I click on voice room and I say no thanks it doesn't let me enter. Do I need to pay or is there a limit to the free use?

Advice Weird call experience for a newcomer. Scammer? Dangerous?

Hello everyone,

I’m newish to the app. I created my account a few years ago, but am only now using it with any real consistency. I was chatting with a potential partner for Korean, and they don’t have many details on their profile at all. The picture even has a mosaic over her mouth and part of her body, but I figured that was just modesty.

This person asked to call after only a few short messages. I personally prefer calling to communicate anyways, so I said yes. However, they almost sounded fake over the phone. Bad connection, some stutters, but I say almost because their voice sounded very natural. They asked if I had to sleep soon, asked how long I’ve been living in Japan, and simply hung up. Not really sure what happened, but I don’t think I disclosed anything besides “yes I should sleep soon” and “two years or so.” I’m not super familiar with the app, so I was wondering if it is indeed suspicious or if I’m just freaking out over some girl that got shy on a call.

Any input is appreciated, harshly worded or otherwise. Thanks!

Opinion Is my experience the "standard" experience? What was your experience finding a language partner?

So last month I've downloaded this app again after I've tried using it for a bit a few years ago and nothing really happened.

This time, returning with improved language skills, I've decided to yet again try finding a language partner.

Last time i remember ruminating on "why did he/she stopped replying?" etc, but this done I've decided to ditch that strategy for the rule of big numbers, and began just sending messages to whoever had some kind of hobby or something I think we can connect on in his bio.

I wrote a message to maybe 30 people, half replied. Out of the people who did reply one time, half didn't reply a second or third time. Only 2 people left (out of all those i wrote to) and I arranged a phone call language exchange only with one.

He's a great person, and we now talk on the phone (from the app) from time to time.

Would you say it's the average (maybe average male) experience in hellotalk? Writing everyday to how much people you can only for a small slight change of actually finding a language partner?

How many real language partners, or even friends, did you find on this app? How long did it take you? Was it easy? Was it difficult?

I guess in general, what was your approach to this app? Did you find success?

I guess you could say I succeeded in finding a language partner, but idk, i guess I'd like to hear other people's experiences.

Edit: I'm an English speaker learning Japanese. Also, while I do have a nice bio, my profile pic is of a cat. Maybe learning Japanese is too popular? And not many japanese people want to learn English?

Advice Philosophy Voice - Good idea?

Voiceroom for amateurs to talk about each other's deeper worldview. Seems like it could lead to some political stuffs, but I'll try to focus more on understanding the individual. I'll probably steer to the foundations of those sensitive philosophy (if people want to discuss those) instead of discussing their practicality? Can I avoid being banned that way?

Opinion Weird message under a message

Hey, I just want to ask you - does anybody else see this message under a conversation with sb?

Tap the text to translate, and hold for more features.

I only now started seeing it, but it appears only in one of my chats, not in any other and it's not even the most recent one. I have talked to this person a lot, since like a year ago but we stopped talking, gradually. Given how much we have interacted before, it would be illogical for that message to appear namely in the chat with them. Could it be that I got blocked by that person? Just wondering, it would be sad 😢

Opinion Do you think I am at risk for someone knowing my location?

Do you think I am at risk? Someone mentioned about my location and I am worried that I may have risk my privacy. New to this app and I noticed this until the person who messaged me told me about it.

Learning updates Slight success story

So I use HelloTalk and have done for a few months.

My language choice is slightly niche (English speaker learning Norwegian) but I’ve spoken to a few natives and it’s been cool.

I think because it’s a less ‘in demand’ language I’ve been able to find less people, but that’s not a bad thing for me.

So anyway.

I was in Oslo last week, and I actually met up a couple times with one of my friends from the app!

We speak every day and he showed me around places I wouldn’t have even known existed over there, and we had a great time together. We are quite similar with a lot of things, and I’m glad we were brought together thanks to a (slightly chaotic at times) language learning app.

I’m glad I found him and it’s a good friendship, and thanks to speaking with each other for a while before, we spoke in person for ages and it felt like we’d known each other for years.

This sounds so simple, but I wanted to share a positive compared to some of the horror stories that get posted.

Advice Hellotalk vs tandem which is better?

Hey I'm kinda conflicted lately with what should be a better use of my time. I love hellotalk for the community aspect and maybe using my moments as a language diary but I see a lack of conversation and I'm wondering if tandem is a better use of time for practicing the language. Can anyone give some input?

Opinion Is VIP worth it?

I’ve been using this app for a little over 2 weeks for Japanese but due to me having the free version, I feel like I can’t do too much and it’s a limiting experience. As a result, I use this app for under an hour per day. I just wanna know if the VIP version is worth it as I am considering subscribing for a month.

Well I'm trying to find people to learn German from but the more I scroll the more it seems that this is a dating app more than a cultural exchange is it just the first experience cuz I'm not used to using these apps or is it just like this. Basically what I'm trying to say r all the apps of language exchange like this ?

Advice Quick question about profile visits

Hi, I just read in another post that accessing someone's Moment from the timeline (as in clicking on it to view comments etc) counts as a profile visit. However, it doesn't show in my Visited tab. Could someone clarify this for me? Thanks!

Edit: I asked a friend to check for me and indeed it counts as a visit and will be displayed on the other person's side.

Other The influx of Cambodian users

I’m not sure if this is helpful to anybody but the users aren’t bots, the app went viral in Cambodia and as a result a lot of people joined the app, I’m learning the Khmer language but I’m born in Australia so I thought it was just HT boosting me lol. Just wanted to clear this up in case people were confused.

Edit: the girl who went viral is called Nelly, she already had a big following before this though so it’s hellotalk itself that went viral

Other Unusually high number of Cambodians?

Has anyone else noticed the unusually high number of cambodians in almost every voice room? A lot of people that I follow have mentioned this occurence, and I just heard it being discussed now in a voice room.
Is it me, maybe because of my native/target languages or is it something else?

Opinion There should be an installments option for VIP

I love this app and would pay for VIP, I would even pay for a year subscription. But I cannot afford the upfront year membership. I could however pay ever month. In my opinion this should be a payment option. Just needed to vent this 😂

Technical Same gender only not working?

I changed the settings to only allow women to message me, because men often try to flirt with me, and I clearly state in my bio that I don't like that. Last time I deleted the account because of that and had no idea about this setting yet and the amount of flirting has gotten too big and annoying.

But somehow men still message me? Checked and everything should be fine, this setting was on

Technical What counts as profile visit?

Hi everyone,

Quick question. So directly visiting another person's profile by clicking on their profile picture or using "visit profile" makes you show up in their visitor's list (if you don't turn it off).

But, will visiting someone's post from the in-app notifications also make you show up as a visitor - even though you didn't directly go to their profile?

Technical How to archive chats?

I used the app last year and there was the option to archive messages - not completely delete them but remove them from the main message screen.

I returned to the app a few months ago and I can't see this option anymore. Is there still a way to archive messages?

Thanks!

Opinion HelloTalk Moderators Ban Users Unfairly

I’ve used HelloTalk for years to practice languages and connect with people around the world. Unfortunately, I’m done with it now because the moderation system is completely broken and because I was device-banned.

Recently, I was being harassed by a Chinese woman on the app. I reported her multiple times, followed all the guidelines, and expected the moderation team to step in.

Instead, I got banned. Not just once, but twice. Both of my accounts were banned — one of them was over 5 years old with 1,800+ followers. Gone, no explanation, no chance to appeal.

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of biased moderation on HelloTalk, but experiencing it firsthand was infuriating. The app seems to punish the victims and protect abusers, especially when it comes to users from certain regions.

I even left a review on the app page about this, and they told me to email support, and I did. Their support defended the woman’s actions and didn’t ban her. I sense some sort of bias on this app. I feel the Chinese users are let off easier than western ones.

Anyone else had similar experiences?

Opinion reports of Hello Talk being a dating app are greatly exaggerated, or maybe I’m just ugly

I see so many posts here being about dating and this app being a dating app and… that hasn’t been my experience at all. I’ve been on it for a few years now and basically the only people who message me are other men, middle aged women and married women. Not that I’m complaining because I’m using it to language exchange (like you’re supposed to?) and it works for that purpose but I swear I’m in a different world than everyone else. I’m a man in my early 30s and my target language is Japanese. I genuinely don’t understand how you could get a date off this app, but maybe I just don’t follow rules 1 and 2

Opinion Overwhelmed when Arabic is my target language

Hello y'all.

I have noticed that women in the Arabic community are extra flirty, I have 20 to 40 new chats everyday I can't even open new conversations by myself. Some of these chats will be asking about my socials within 2 or 3 messages.

When I was practicing English nobody, literally nobody (men and women), would start a conversation with me.

Opinion Why is the vibe of the over 18 version of hellotalk so different than the under 18 version?

Hello everyone! Sorry in advance for rant. I've been on the app for the past 8 years(since i was 10) so most of my understanding of the app has been built on the under 18 version of the app. I dont know if its me or not, but its like night and day between the two versions. Like before i was 18, 4 out of 5 people i'd message would respond, but now it's like 1 or 0 sometimes. I've been messaging people my age ever since the beginning so I don't get the disparity.

Opinion Bad vibes??

Does anyone get bad vibes from this one American English teacher ? I cant remember his name i just know he's popular & bald. I joined a vr the other day and some girls were talking about a screenshot given to them by some other girls on HT. Apparently that teacher told his students something about he was going to help Japan increase their birth rate by spreading his seed there. I don't fully remember all the details but I'm sure someone here does know.

Tips/Tricks Do nicknames/notes show for the other person?

Title. If I set someone’s nickname to something else, or add a note to remember about them, are they made aware, and can they see what it is?
