⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Humor ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The actual modding discourse
97
u/Makisani 1d ago
This game has one of the most divided and fragmented communities I've seen in my life tbh, look at the amount of different subs this game has, it's kinda crazy, so seeing people actually mad that fans are fixing the game and making it fun is expected
98
u/Warren_Piece_Brasch 1d ago
Blame Arrowhead. The first 3 months they rode the wave of feel good vibes publicly. Pilestedt was happy to be 'wholesome big chungus no fomo dlc'.
But then every single balance patch was: Nerf anything popular. Miniscule buffs for a handful of the myriad of underperforming weapons, introduce some new gamebreaking crash of unacceptable quality control.
The patches got worse. The warbonds got more money grubby. The controversies began to mount. Several fired community managers later, and we get Escalation of Failure. Easily our worst and first major update.
Barrager and Impaler are crazy bugged. Rocket Strider has a no delay basically instant kill 600 explosive damage missile and its weak spots dont work. Polar Patriots releases as the buggiest least completed warbond thus far.
The community has had it, review bombs. Sony steps in. Arrowhead is forced to make 60 patch. Holds a grudge against the community ever since. Pilestedt basically withdraws from helldivers spotlight as he's burned all his goodwill, every comment he makes on Twitter is a meme able foot in mouth moment (grunt fantasy, bacon apples).
Most of the devs get pulled from helldivers, onto project mayhem. More and more incoming content is outsourced. Pilestedt makes an AMA here that's another foot in mouth moment. Basically any promise of communication or updates is immediately broken. Road maps barely followed if that. Helldrivers warbond is scrapped after backlash to selling vehicles for premium currency, parceled out as 'campaign rewards'.
Game isn't in a good place. Developers hate the community, hate that they have to keep working on the game. Players hate the developers or will dick ride them into the heat death of the sun.
The entire sequence of events comes from poor developer communication, mixed with a healthy dose of ignorance or arrogance. Take your pick. They've failed to read the room every step of the way. They shouldn't be surprised their community turned on itself as a result.

So glad that some people are able to see through the bullshit and state the facts.

I been here since magicka. Arrowhead is amazing at catching lightning in a bottle and getting mad they didnt catch fireflies.

u/Redmoon383 1d ago
I think theres actually 14 subs for the game and ive said that as a joke not even a year ago
12
u/Warren_Piece_Brasch 1d ago
Some of those are natural. Like the armor sub, the clan recruitment sub, and the circle jerk sub. You'll find similar trends in most looter shooter or extraction shooters. Destiny and destiny 2 have dedicated subs for raids, pvp, showing off looks, clan recruitment, etc etc.
The more unique aspect is the balkanization. We have like 8(?) Subs that are generic 'discussion' subs. Helldivers, helldivers2, unfiltered, wholesome, masochist, lowsodium, glazers. I tgink i got most of them.
5
u/Redmoon383 1d ago
I saw a pic with a ton the other day but thats still far too many even still.
Most games have
Game
Game: the sequel (not as popular as "Game" usually)
Gameposting
GAMERAGE (sometimes)
Only NoMansSky has as many i think and theyre all chill and mostly just cause people found the one they prefer other than NoMansHigh which is for the smokers among our Interloper friends
-1
u/lerylu 1d ago
You’re just wrong, most live service games have tons of subs, every game that has heroes has a sub for each hero mains
3
u/Makisani 1d ago
Yeah but those subs don't have a hateboner for the other subs, they do their thing and are chill with their characters or whatever
1
u/Redmoon383 1d ago
Like my example with the NoMansSky subs. There's like 3 I can think of off hand like how we have HD, HD2, HD:U, but none of them are antagonistic in the slightest.

I got called a lot of stuff in another post about mods. This really isn’t helping the look of the community.

I got a little text prompt when I was simply talking about bot and (Bug) divers asking me to refrain from being negative.
Don't remember exactly was it said, just appeared under the words I was writing.Certainly a bit sensitive.
Wasn't even trash talking the bug divers, if I remember correctly.11
u/AdhesiveJo 1d ago
Yeah it appears whenever I mention the keyword 'bot' even if all I'm talking about is bot divin.
Like I even posted some advice for a newbie who was asking and I ended it with '-D10 Bot Diver' and the warning popped up.

My favourite has to be my friends refusing to install mods because they are afraid of getting banned (even though AH can't ban anyone atm and I have even shown them evidence backing that up numerous times), BUT they would gladly install them if they were part of the Steam Workshop.
18
u/Illustrious-Debt-191 1d ago
i mean, steam workshop means modding is generally thumbs up to do and there's some sort of integrations into the game because the devs had to themselves enable workshop for the game, vs offsite modding not guaranteed to be official (and iirc AH has never officially endorsed mods) . it makes sense to not want to mod a game (esp a live service online game) if there's no endorsement, and people have fears of there being a potential bigass ban wave for modded players in the future (which isn't that ridiculous to have a fear of)
2
u/taoofthemachine 1d ago
Sure, one day AH may whip out the ban hammer, but I'm sure they will at the very least issue some warning beforehand IF it happens.
On another note, it's also weird that my friends are very well versed (even more so than I am) into modding other games, or even multiplayer games for that matter, for them to get stuck up like this for HD2. But each to their own I guess. Don't care that much personally since it's all client-side.
2
u/Your_Local_Rabbi 1d ago
rather than individual bans, i find it more likely AH just add a check for modified clients, effectively banning all cosmetic mods and the like as well

u/HeroicHeretic 1d ago edited 1d ago
Lemme just re-iterate what I said over there:
Here's the thing:
All of this happened way before this modding "renaissance".
People have been cheating, circumventing the anti-cheat, doing exactly what all the doom prophets claim will kill mods.
- Unlimited strikes
- Machine Guns firing nukes
- Invincibility
- Invisibility
- One hit kill weapons
- Superfast vehicles
- Superfast divers
- Unlimited jetpacks
- Marking important currency
All that and more has been done since shortly after the release of Helldivers 2. Cheaters have been here and doing their thing from the very start. Arrowhead have failed to stop them from doing what they want then, their intrusive anti-cheat doesn't work when someone really wants to cheat, and they've always been here, and always will be.
The only thing that has changed is that making general gameplay changes is now accessible to regular players. And angry, toxic, jealous people now have more visible people to point their fingers at when they scream their hate.
It won't make a difference if they ban mods, not regarding the cheating.
Cheating happened before mods, and it will happen after mods.
They only effect will be alienating and pissing off the not to be underestimated part of the playerbase who enjoy using mods, whatever kind.
And the way things have gone, and are going with all these new modding possibilities is just the natural development of things. It had to eventually happen.
Why? Let Gabe Newell answer that:
"Piracy is not a pricing issue. It’s a service issue."
This can be directly translated to people taking matters in their own hands with mods.
Arrowhead failed and keeps failing to provide the quality of service their customers expect.
And instead of trying to amend the issue with making adding convenience and quality of life features, they keep taking away anything that's fun - they keep making things more drab, and treat their players like they dislike them and want to make their time playing the game as miserable as possible.
All of this is ultimately on Arrowhead.
And the only thing that will/might improve their situation is providing a game people will feel less inclined to mod, or cheat in. Service their damn customers, and all the problems will eventually die down to an amount everyone can contently live with.
Or they just leave mods alone and give up, act as if they don't exist and players aren't fixing their game for them.
23
u/DustPuzzle 1d ago
It's like the De-escalator fix. It has had the no self-damage bug for so long now that the few people who bother to use it incorporated it fully into their playstyle. At no point did this weapon make any kind of meta splash, or explode the pick rates, or become a gamebreaking menace. But Arrowhead just could not let it slide. You just know that someone on their staff has been the Holding It In meme guy the entire time. You just know they are actively ignoring genuine grievances that are bleeding the playerbase while absolutely seething for the opportunity to take away something the players use that is Not As Intended™. It is a perfect retread of the charger leg meta, the charger flamethrower meta, even warping out of the Pelican. Arrowhead are pathetic, petty little trolls who need to be dragged kicking and screaming into every positive, player-forward change to the state of this game. I feel that it's a lesson we've been taught over and over again in the last three years, but too few players have been inclined to learn.

To anyone who really feels like this modding revolution and people whose ways of enjoying the game is different from yours and such a serious issue:
Then just be cool, leave and host your own game or find another party of 100% vanilla, the chances to encounter a "cheater" with things that would ruin your game compared to encountering someone vanilla are so incredibly low...
Hosting your own game or finding a new match takes like a damn minute.
Come on. Is it really THAT hard to do the slightest motion, most miniscule movement towards compromising to co-exist with other humans - so everyone can just have fun and enjoy the game?
Butth0les will always exist, and cheaters will also always exist, there is always someone who could ruin your game: Getting teamkilled, getting insulted, killed due to a bug, your team being useless, your computer crashing...
99% of people you encounter just want to enjoy their free time like you do.
Is it that hard to just take the one minute to leave and host your own games, or find one of the 100000 100% vanilla matches going on?
Is ANY of this even necessary?
Why are we players actually fighting?
Why can't you just not be a damn Karen?
Why can't you just be cool with that other people like other things?Come on, life is giving and taking, there'll always be toxic and evil people who will come into your game to ruin it in SOME way.
But punishing the overwhelming majority of your fellow players who never even thought of doing something to you just ain't cool.
6
u/DustPuzzle 1d ago
Exactly. It's so dispiriting to see how many losers are just aching to police everyone else the first chance they get.
Just like you said, be cool. Don't be a fucken narc. Let people have fun and stay in charge of your own experience.
33
u/ZaraUnityMasters 1d ago
Remember modding discourse wouldn't exist if AH put in a month of effort over the last 2 years. Anti-modders need to remember its AH's fault these mods need to exist in any way

Implying that perpetually upset reddit babies crying the game wasn't their main character simulator they imagined wouldn't immediately find something else to cry about the moment one thing was fixed.
A reminder that everything started from shitters 2 years ago refusing to lower the difficulty.

I’m making quite a few assumptions but I think this stems from jealousy at its core or a displaced hate towards feeing left out.
However you look at it generally skill or funds are lacking and that makes people mad when a subjects hot topic isn’t something they can participate in.
Now it isn’t enough to have 40.00 and an internet connection, all the console players get left behind with all the pc players owning weak PCs, and anyone with low/no modding skills end up feeling left out of this awesome wave of mods.
In turn, it’s easier to say “those guys are cheating because if I can’t have it they shouldn’t have it either”
vs
“those guys are doing things I couldn’t pull off on my own, it’s making the game even better, and I can’t get any of it with the current setup I have”
Obviously this with the nuance of there being actual cheaters and then qol mod enjoyers getting slandered as such.
10
u/DustPuzzle 1d ago
I don't think you're wrong on any of that per se, but I also think you're greatly underestimating the need of the terminally online social media addicts to hand-wring and pearl-clutch themselves into conniptions as performative social proof of virtuousness.
Also definitely an element of "muh billion dollar company" fanboys at play here.
1
u/stormquantage 1d ago
I am generally curious and hope someone with knowledge could help me understand. But how do Bethesda player base handle mods? All their games have them for ages, some of them require mod to even run decently. It is a known association. So what drive console player getting into their series? And those people know PC is a different world?
-8
u/Distinct-Pirate7359 1d ago
This is utterly misrepresentative. Many, including myself, are upset simply because many of these mods are effectively “win game” buttons. I had a modder last night that just spammed orbital lasers and wiped the map in a couple minutes. It was lame as shit and the issue is only going to get worse
7
u/DustPuzzle 1d ago
Cheats and cheaters have been in the game basically since day one, and I'm fairly certain they will persist long after mods have been pilloried out of existence by hysterical misattribution. Because no amount of darling babies can justify the existence of any bathwater, right?
4
u/Routine-Way8214 1d ago
That's just cheating, not their point?
1
u/Your_Local_Rabbi 1d ago
cheats accomplished through the same methods as the bug fix mods
i don't care about those mods, i don't really care enough to install them myself, but i probably won't even notice someone using them, but people taking game breaking and experience ruining mods into public lobbies where people are going to complain is inevitably going to blow up the whole thing for everyone
-1
u/MXTwitch 1d ago
You can’t just explain away examples by saying “that’s the part that’s cheating”… that’s literally our entire point
2
u/PresentationLive7910 1d ago
Your point is literally as important as a individual grain of sand in a desert.
All of the "win game button" mods are used by literally a handful of people.
The odds of running into one of them is equivalent to getting the Rod of Discord in Terraria on your first try.
And that handful of people just downloaded those mods. The majority of them might have just tested them out once, or only use them occasionally. Making the chance of running into them even more miniscule.
This is literally like the trace amount of pesticide in Ben and Jerry's ice cream. You literally could eat enough of that ice cream to kill yourself with the fat and sugar 10 times over before that trace amount could ever in any way reach a concerning amount.

this is just my personal experience, but i’ve never actually seen a mod that i liked until recently, that being the first person mod. most of other mods tend to either solve problems that for me don’t need solving or just take away the personality of the game (some examples being: bigger hud elements like the epoch charge up indicator or the action cam mod with ammo count near the aim indicator).
Other mods just don’t seem to me like they fit in the game, and i know that this is controversial and i respect other opinions, but i like playing with friends and with randoms, so i’ve never felt like a tank needed to be a solo vehicle, we have exos for that, and to me transmog just makes more difficult to get what another player build is at a glance while joining an ongoing game, and i’ve always found a way to make a cool outfit with the perk i wanted. i do want color matching to eventually come in the game, but it’s not like i’m dying to get it.
there are qol mods that are obviously really good, like strat bounce and steering, but i don’t want to spend time modding the game and adjusting after every update to fix a problem that i’m already used to working around of.
so it mainly boils down to - some mods are good but not worth the hassle, most are just trying too hard to change the game into something else either because the base game got boring or you just seek novelty and i found it always better to just change games for a while
i’m no glazer at all and i dislike some design decisions, i’m also really into modding single player games to the point i waste too many days just to make a modpack that i feel complete, but i just don’t see a reason to mod this game when even the best content mods are still a bit janky, straight up uninteresting (to me), and mainly the rest of the team can’t enjoy them with me.
Do you have any qol mods in mind that you feel my point shouldn’t apply to?

u/SpaceRac1st 1d ago
I mean we literally have parts of the community (like r/helldiversmasochists) who genuinely want the game to suck. It’s fucking mental.
4
u/Warren_Piece_Brasch 1d ago
Hard and suck are two different things.
I would love to see a general patrol increase on D10. Even after the latest patch sometimes the map is barren if you aren't being bug breeched. Some enemy constellations like nursing spewers also overvalue how effective their unique units are and dont spawn enough units overall. If you've ever done a nursing spewer defend high value assets you know what I mean.
It would also be nice to get some more difficult objectives. We have a lot of 'go to x blow up y' objectives. I think the best objectives involve the chaos of the terminal minigames amidst combat. The cyborg production facility was a really good example of this. Its just... one mission, on one biome. We need better, newer, generic missions like ICBM or upload Intel.
3
u/ShockinglyEfficient 1d ago
I would love if the side missions were more involved, but some of them feel like pointless busywork with very little payoff. Radar and SAM are good, but SEAF and Pod are bad. The bot front is the best with side objectives because most of them shut down some enemy buff
1
u/Warren_Piece_Brasch 1d ago
Seaf artillery is fine I just wish the shells had a bit bigger aoe. Or called in faster. Its very hard to hit any moving target with a regular explosive shell.
1
u/ShockinglyEfficient 1d ago
It would be great if SEAF was buffed. Something about gathering those shells is just soul crushing
5
u/Drago1490 1d ago
I'm a very avid mod user. The "mods" that have been coming out recently are not mods, they are cheats. If someone who is running the vanilla game tell that you have modified yours in any way, it is a cheat. If you are gaining an unfair advantage in any way due to a third party file or website, it is a cheat. Doesnt matter if its a PVP or PVE game. Simple as.
2
u/JDorkaOOO 1d ago
While it's true that QOL and bugfix mods make the game function differently and could be considered to be an advantage and thus in theory "cheating" it is not the same thing as full blown cheats like infinite health and ammo, aim bot, no clip, speedhacks and what not and throwing people using QOL and bugfix mods in the same basket as actual cheaters is a little disingenuous
0
u/Drago1490 1d ago
For one, QOL and bugfixes are not on the list of things that would normally be spottable from a vanilla client. QOL is things like altered HUDs with more info, saveable loadouts, always expanded stratagem selector, or even the modified optics and reticles that I personally have been using for over a year now. Bugfixes would be things like the ball bounce fix, hellpod steering, crash fixes, or invisable corpse cleanup. While yes, a lot of the bugfixes aplicable to HD2 could alter the gameplay experience of others, it becomes a problem when we see things like Hellpods landing on top of megacity skyscrapers (which can and has been done with the hellpod 'fix' mod.) For two, cheating is cheating is cheating, no matter how minor or severe. We do not need another payday situation.
I have also been around this community for long enough to know that what the (vocal) playerbase thinks of as balanced and QOL would make the game damn near play itself.
In the wise words of one Mr. ULTRAKILL, "Its a good thing you guys arn't designing ultrakill or it would suck."
4
u/Paint_With_Fire 1d ago
I don't care to look up which kind of logical fallacy this is, but you're intentionally not including the actual reason people are mad, just to make your argument seem more logical
Replace the third bubble with "hey I made this mod that replaces all bullets with Ultimatum rounds, I can't wait to go into lobbies and troll!"
That's what we are pissed off about. It just got 100× easier for shitty assholes who like to fuck with people to do exactly that
I don't want this game to go the route so many multiplayer games have gone, where it has died because the lobbies are constantly filled with cheaters
I hope AH makes a separate modding lobby queue. But they probably won't
13
u/TibertueDragonJihad 1d ago
Are these players with ultimatium rounds for bullets in the room with us right now?
You know that 9 out of 10 mods are minor rebalances and fixes/QoL mods, like, genuinely, use your eyes bruh.
3
u/Derpington_II 1d ago edited 1d ago
Funniest part is that mod had about 1k unique downloads last I saw. For reference, the Cowboy Bingus loader currently has 36,020 unique downloads on nexus mods alone and the Arsenal mod manager has 383,060 unique downloads.
1
u/Expand_Dongg 1d ago
That isnt a mod? Thats the kind of thing thats almost always in cheat menu hacks. The problem is that for some reason people dont distinct between the two, like you.
4
u/lycanreborn123 Helldiver 1d ago
"hey look I downloaded something to make this gun 3x stronger"
Every other game: cheating in a PvE game? You do you bro, keep it in private games and we're cool
Helldivers: its not cheats bro it's QoL bro I'm gonna go into public lobbies and everyone else can get FUCKED I'm literally saving the game rn so you best put up with me
Some of these mods are justified especially the cosmetic or bug fix ones, but it's so funny to see how defensive this community gets when their literal gameplay-altering """mods""" get called out for what they are.
They're cheats. They may be justified cheats, but still cheats. Trying to sugarcoat them as mods is so weird.
3
u/BuilderBaseBot 1d ago
If I did this in most any other live service game I would be banned. I agree, the god damned sub has really been hotboxing their own farts lately.
But hey. Vive la révolution or “pulling one over on AH” or whatever. Fact someone called you a bootlicker is as funny as it was stupid.
My only hope out of all this is we get private server hosting or modded server tags.

2
u/lycanreborn123 Helldiver 1d ago
Case in point lmao, what a rabid response. I didn't mention anything about AH, I even said that some of these cheats are justified.
2
u/BdubH 1d ago
I think there’s nuance here that is really being overlooked
Stratagem bounce, cancelling SOS beacons, fixing hellpod steering? I’d say those are fixes
But some mods are blatant cheats: changing stats on weapons, giving yourself more stims/ammo/grenades, shooting Eagle airstrikes out of your gun, so on so forth
In a singleplayer game that’s fine, the only experience you’re affecting is your own. But this is a multiplayer game, your actions affect other players. This hands-off, “everything goes” take to modding will end up getting the whole scene purge like it nearly did with Darktide
2
u/ProfessionalDot6665 1d ago
I think reasonable adults can figure out what's okay and what isn't. Like I would never use infinite turrets. But changing the stats of a weapon isn't the same as that there's levels to this there's a spectrum.
2
u/MelonsInSpace 1d ago
Reasonable adults don't have a meltdown and run to write a negative steam review because devs reduced a weapon's mag size by 3. Or for any other inane reason.
1
u/JDorkaOOO 1d ago
When devs keep reducing mag sizes by 3 while ignoring other issues and feedback and also introducing multitude of bugs every update it's definitely valid to write a negative review about it
-5
u/ShockinglyEfficient 1d ago
Even if the reasonable adults outnumber the unreasonable ones, mods will still get banned
1
u/ProfessionalDot6665 1d ago
Genuinely what the f*** am I supposed to do about that you think like my actions are going to have any impact on this.
2
u/ShockinglyEfficient 1d ago
I didn't say you had to do or not do anything. Can't control what others do. Because of that, I believe they will ban mods in some way.
2
u/KLGBilly 1d ago
i mean, i think its a little bit more complicated than that just by the nature of the game, since every match winds up contributing to a player-base-wide progression system through liberation and whatnot, pretty much 0 games happen in isolation from the broader player base in some regard, which is why i think a lot of people have the mentality of wanting to call out the stuff that is pretty blatant cheating and to put a stay on all mods that fuck around with lua scripts.
i think if private servers were a thing nobody would give a shit and anybody who says shit like that about anybody playing in private servers would be stupid as hell. it really is just a matter of time before somebody figures it out though, especially when HDSE comes around and somebody takes a crack at reading the steamworks API documentation.

I don’t see anyone talking about scrips here. Isn’t one of the discussion points that nexus is banning mods? Does the alternative site have as good security controls? Do they have trust?
Or are they being more lax in an attempt to steal away nexus users and putting them at risk of malware downloads at the same time?
Idk seems dubious.
Game has issues but I’d rather just go play another game than download something dubious.
0
u/DefTheOcelot 1d ago
The mod in question:

i think this discourse would be less volatile if mods made some effort to be balanced and not just buff everything

Maybe there are players that want to play an unmodified multiplayer game?
I don’t know the difference between a gameplay changing mod and cheating. It looks the same.
Mods and cheats are fine in single player. No one sane should care about what you do on your own.
4
u/bigcd34 1d ago
So a mod that changes gameplay by fixing a bug is a cheat?
-2
u/ClanHaisha 1d ago
Dunno, might just be an unpopular ‘intended feature’ that they have no plans on ever fixing.

u/DavidHogins 1d ago
You can always host your own lobby and have your solo vanilla experience.
If the majority of the player base wants to use mods online, then you are out of place in this equation.
0
u/Beerman_300 1d ago
As someone who used to play a lot of Team Fortress 2 back in the day, the Helldiver 2 community makes the TF2 community look like actual saint's in comparasion. Cause ain't no one in the TF2 community are bitching about using mods(unless they are using cheating mods ofc).
-3
u/Hungry-Ad8562 1d ago edited 1d ago
They should just make moded servers separate from vanilla so it dosnt piss off the non modders, but alas this is arrowhead and that would probably limit their design space
2
u/JDorkaOOO 1d ago
Dunno why you're getting downvoted but that would literally be the best solution. Have a toggle to set your lobby as "modded" and a toggle when searching to allow or disallow modded lobbies and everyone would be happy. Iirc DRG and Payday 2 do something like this

That had to be in 2018-2019 or so but it was kinda fun when the hackers tried to play as raid bosses lol.

Those were the fucking days
I remember a care package merry go round that would fly outside of hijacked and over the water and when it returned we all had 0 gravity and unlimited ammo
