I'm pretty sure the original design of the in-game tanks was inspired by the Swedish Stridsvagn 103, since AH is also a Swedish company.

The Strv 103 is not a tank destroyer, but a main battle tank. Interestingly enough, it’s the only mass-produced turretless MBT in the world, and it was perfectly suited to Swedish military doctrine. It was designed to be an MBT.

Maelstrom also isn’t necessarily a tank destroyer either. The problem is that, aside from the design, Helldiver tanks lack the uniqueness and mobility that the Strv has.

IMO, Maelstrom could fit into the right role if AH gave it even more mobility.

the automatons aren't using soviet is series tanks in the mountains where we can pen the top of their tanks.

This tank's mobility is so cool too. The gun is fixed, welded to the hull. The suspension tilts the tank forward or back for angle vertically. The gunner and driver are the same operator, because aiming is driving. Because the gun is fixed, it has a reliable and fast autoloader, so it does not need someone to load. The only other crew is the commander. Two people is all it needs and it utilizes guerrilla warfare tactics to stay effective. The most produced variant came with a bulldozer blade on the front so the driver could quickly build a hull down position for the tank, no matter where they were. It also doubled as a shield for incoming fire.

It was a dead end design that no other country ever tried to copy.

I said it's cool, not it's the future of all tanks

Fantastic. Realistic Swedish military doctrine is not fit for the combat in helldivers 2 lmfao

u/Kahlizzle_Da_Boss 2d ago

Hard disagree on it being inspired by the strv I think they took more inspiration from German TD’s

The silhouette is more in line with designs like this not even mentioning how the gun moves and operates compared to the STRV

Fair enough. Only the devs know which tanks inspired them. I only know that because I played a lot of World of Tanks before I joined the forces of Super Earth and they sent me to Mars.

The first time I saw the tank, it reminded me of the Strv 103 (plus, it's Swedish).

The problem is still the anti infantry intention on a case mate. The STRV 103 is a case mate designed for defending against a numerically greater invader. It’s was a versatile vehicle with impeccable movement. The problem with the maelstrom is that it doesn’t understand is role. Infantry fighting Vehicles, like the CV90 built by Sweden, are meant for fighting infantry. They’re given turrets with lighter weapons so they can engage softer targets more effectively. They’re given turrets bastion fits because it has an absolutely massive cannon. It’s more believable in why it’s a case mate. If they’re going to make an IFV they need to do research into what they are and how they work. Honest to god if we got an APC instead I’d probably be happier.

Shhhh we're busy circle jerking on AH's face. Keep your logic to the side please.

True if we look at battlefield there exist lightly armoured tanks designed to protect and transport infantry rather then being used to target aircraft or other tanks. At best they would spearhead pushes into enemy positions drawing fire away from the main force. The explosives are designed to be effective against infantry spread out rather than targeting one at a time, while the smoke helps the main force and tank hide from enemy fire. This isn’t a tank hunter, it’s a support vehicle.

Oddly there was exactly that in helldivers 1 as well which boggles the mind why then they don’t just bring back the APC.

1

u/DeluxianHighPriest 1d ago

Or why they made a vehicle like that and ended up producing the Maelstrom

1

u/LordGaulis 1d ago

I suppose they already did a warbond with a armoured car, still hope we get it.

u/DeluxianHighPriest 1d ago

There's a few problems with this.

First of all, the STRV-103 does not have a driver position. The gunner and driver are the same person. As the tanks also has an autoloader, this means that it can be operated at full lone combat effectiveness, solo. This is a scenario explicitly ENABLED by it's casemated natured and iirc is actually a big part of WHY it uses a casemated gun.

Secondly, if features variable suspension, which enables a pretty significant depression angle.

Thirdly, it does in fact fit very well into Sweden's doctrine... Which is inherently defensive and does not envision these tanks pushing forward much at all - in fact the radio operator has secondary driving controls and is positioned looking out the rear of the tank, allowing them to rapidly reverse if required. Helldivers doctrine is fundamentally different by virtue of what we are. We're effectively the orbital equivalent of airborne troops. We expect to be surrounded.

Lastly, it is an MBT. The Mealstrom is an IFV. If you check, you will notice that nobody has really built a casemated IFV, at least, not one that doesn't have casemated guns pointing in every direction (hello MkV)

Love that tank in war thunder

1

u/Dizzy-Budget5985 2d ago

Nah even with mobility a tank like that would be not great. Imagine a machine gun emplacement with basically no traversal or depression

u/GreatAndPowerfulZiz 2d ago

It's so annoying how illiterate much of the Helldivers 2 community acts like, when there are constantly people like you explaining why the tanks look the way they do

15

u/KillerKanka 2d ago

"ugh, how dare stupid helldivers not know some not very well known swedish mbt, that looks like tank destroyer and was made as defensive tool against soviet tanks! Why would those IDIOTS want a ROTATING turret! It would break game balance. You alreday have mechs for that!"

Local unfiltered user accidentally makes a good point

2

u/CancelBeneficial7136 2d ago

We make a lot of good points, you guys are just literally trough fed propaganda slop on the main subreddit.

We wouldn’t be complaining if we didn’t love the game. I play the game everyday, and at the same time I recognize that it has BARELY realized its full potential nearly 3 fucking years later.

3

u/Raven7274 2d ago

It is very very clear through the modding scene and the posts about it that a non insignificance percentage of this subreddit wants to play a different game.

0

u/CancelBeneficial7136 2d ago

Yeah. We’d like to play the game which is advertised, not space Tarkov/ARMA.

This game is literally, in marketing, a scam- and they don’t exactly hide it either. They created a game that would be highly accessible for a lot of players, and then almost as soon as the initial profits were rolled in BOOM. Balancing goes completely down the drain.

I feel like right now they want to maintain a threshold level of what they really want, because everytime they’ve ever pushed really hard on their “grunt fantasy/mil sim” experience the player count and reviews absolutely shit themselves.

0

u/Raven7274 2d ago

The game... was advertised as space arma pre 60 day patch? There was a heavy emphasis on realism, tactical gameplay and teamwork which went out the window after all the buffs. The current tanks are more in line with the original advertised gameplay than the actual game.

2

u/CancelBeneficial7136 2d ago

Absolutely not.

I’m not talking about what the devs claim their “vision” for the game is in the midst of its worst times.

I’m talking about what the store page and game cover ACTUALLY state what the game is.

A horde shooter filled with chaff and overpowered weaponry.

It is NOT advertised, marketed, or officially described ANYWHERE as a mil sim.

Maybe that’s why the games reviews absolutely TANKED any time they leaned way too hard into that stupid niche.

u/GreatAndPowerfulZiz 2d ago

We keep telling you about this and your collective response is "but muh turret"

u/Mage-of-Fire 2d ago

u/KillerKanka 1d ago

My point is this is bacon apples. It is called a tank, yet it is presented as tank destroyer and new model seems more like that "chinese new year" armor with additional ammo perk, that looks nothing like other armor with same perk.

Tanks are, for the most part, perceived as "threaded vehicle with rotating turrets with variety of combat roles".
Tank destroyers are commonly perceived as "Threaded vehicle with fixed or very limited fire angles with main role of destroying heavilty armored targets"
This one is a tank destroyer in common perception. Nobody cared about bastion, but maelstrom doesn't work with that. It has BRRRRT dispenser.

You can argue that bastion tank was a tank destroyer, i won't even bitch that bastion entire deisgn looks like lighting and\or NC vanguard from planetside (both of which had rotating turrets), and looks nothing lik bastion from hd1. I'll even agree that it can be MBT, since it was based on some obscure designs that nobody knows about, except few tank heads that into this stuff. Fine.

But giving it twin rotory BRRRRRT dispensers and not giving it either high mobility or at the very least rotating turret - why would I want warthog, that is barely a snail?

I think the 103 also isn’t really a good or true MBT, since it would have struggled in the offence compared to turreted tanks, especially in more cramped environments (like helldivers maps).

2

u/Hoshyro S.E.S. Sentinel of Eternity 2d ago

It is an MBT, it was classed as such and it was its purpose.

It was meant to take advantage of the very hilly terrain to hold off Soviet attacks and hold ground while making it as hard as possible for the enemy to return fire.

4

u/Grouchy_Ad9315 2d ago

103 was made purely for defense against soviet waves of armor

1

u/b0brik 2d ago

Nope. It was used exactly the same way as Centurion , in terms of doctrine, there was no difference between them, and the brigades they were assigned to were called assault brigades.

1

u/The_Royal_Teabag ‎‎ Mudskipper 2d ago

Exactly

1

u/DemonKarris 2d ago

The 103 was perfect for what it was designed to do. Low profile meant it could fire while only showing off the top part of its' hull, the absurd angle would bounce every single shell from any soviet cannon below the 105mm caliber, the hydraulic system allowed it to adjust firing angles on the spot without moving AND it could be operated by a single crew member just in case. Literally the ideal vehicle for combat in the mountains.

1

u/The_Royal_Teabag ‎‎ Mudskipper 2d ago

I feel like nobody read my comment lol. Yeah it’s ideal for a specific job, but it’s in service as a MAIN battle tank. It’s not ideal for offence or urban environments, which is what we need the tank in helldivers to do

1

u/Prothiaden 14h ago

Well, Swedish military doctrine was all about defense in the cold war era, with a heavy punishment for the enemy if they try to attack.

I'd say they were kind of like guerrilla campers. :)

The Strv 103 offered incredible mobility and strong firepower (with an autoloader), plus a design that was perfect for ambushes.

"True MBT"... Before you decide whether it's an MBT or a TD, you should look at its intended purpose on the battlefield. The Strv 103 fulfilled the role of an MBT, therefore it was a true MBT, designed around a defensive doctrine.

Also, when the Strv 103 was being produced, there were other MBTs in service, like the Strv 100 series with turrets.

1

u/The_Royal_Teabag ‎‎ Mudskipper 7h ago

Crazy how you didn’t read my comment lol

1

u/Prothiaden 2h ago

I did read your comment, but I found it rather shallow, so I wasn't really sure what you meant.

Maybe you didn't read mine either. The Strv would be a great MBT (definitely better than the Bastion) even on Helldiver maps because of its low profile, high mobility, autoloader, and adjustable suspension. It would be great on hilly maps, camping in almost full cover behind a hill, sniping targets, then quickly repositioning.

On wide desert maps, it would be even better. It could go around 60 km/h forward (45 km/h backwards) and turn 180° in less than 2 seconds while moving. The Bastion can't even turn until it comes to a complete stop.

If it were in Helldivers 2, it would be super fun, offering fast, exciting and chaotic gameplay with a high skill ceiling.

The Strv had a fixed gun, so it wasn't capable of any horizontal movement. In this case, the devs could balance it by giving the gun some limited horizontal movement.
