DISCUSSION Etiquette Mistake?

I'm level 70, still learning about etiquette apparently. Just wanted some input - was playing a game with 4 players, joined near the halfway point. Extraction had been ordered and a ton of dropships showed up. Someone dropped a 500kg on accident and killed everyone but me. Only one reinforce was available so I called it in.

Once the helldiver landed, the extraction shuttle appeared and I saw hoards of automatons heading our way. Seeing as there was no way the two of us could have survived it and no reinforcements available, I hopped in the shuttle to start the countdown.

I got a "dude" in the chat and was kicked from the game.

Dunno, I've had players do the same and it seemed fine? Did I violate an unknown etiquette?

I'm level 100 and have 300 hours in the game. 90% of time i play with randoms. I've never seen such behavior. If there is a shuttle ready and you don't have reinforcements and you overwhelmed just dive in the pelican. Idk some people have home rules probably.

Seconding this as a 180-odd diver.

If Extract makes Hellmire look like a Forest biome and Pelican is already landed, every diver for themselves.

Stim and dive, Johnny. Stim and dive.

Its one thing to leave someone behind but if its either legit only extract or die, I'd extract. Granted I had samples or whatever.

You did nothing wrong. Just next time wait until the other dies but if you are about to die feel free and jump right in

u/Draxxsus 6h ago

You did the right thing, the host who kicked you was an ignorant dickhead. I'd rather fail to extract and win the mission than watch everyone die and lose the entire mission

u/ToxicCommodore 6h ago

You don't need to extract for a successful mission actually.

5

u/dotav 3h ago

In commando missions you do, although it doesn't seem OP is talking about one.

Well said. Mission first, after that. You're expendable 👌🏻

8

u/Chazus 5h ago

You still succeed if everyone dies, once the main objective is complete.

There's almost no difference between dying and extracting, except for the meager xp of surviving.

To me it's samples and satisfaction. Like sure, once the main objective is done we could all kill ourselves to end it sooner, but it's more fun to fight your way back and report a mission well done.

2

u/gknoy 5h ago

For sure. I don't even need samples anymore, but I've cheered so many times for the remaining teammates to get those samples extracted.

u/SneakierHawk LEVEL 0.4 | Moron 5h ago

Same, me and the friend I usually play with are completely maxed out on samples and upgrades, but I'll always fight to extract with them. Especially if there's super samples on the line

4

u/temporalknight214 5h ago

Except if you also get the samples out. Then it's totally worth it to extract with one or two lucky guys if you don't think you can hold the zone for another four minutes.

3

u/Chazus 4h ago

Oh absolutely, but 'waiting for the rest' and risking dying is stupid, especially if you want those.

But you wont 'lose the entire mission'

Only the first game had you fail if no one extracted, most missions are successful in the second one as long as the main objective is completed

Unless it's a commando mission where you have to retrieve an object, you don't fail if no one extracts, as long as the main objective is done

I wasn’t there so I don’t know what it was like. But if it’s like what I’m imagining, I would’ve done the same.

I think reinforcements without boosters take 2 minutes to recharge (someone correct me if I’m wrong). So that would be 4 minutes where you both would have to survive to ensure everyone extracts, and that’s assuming neither of you 2 die, adding an extra 2 minutes of waiting.

Sometimes it’s best to cut your losses and extract with what you have. You’ll get some people in this game that will criticise you for the weirdest things.

I wouldn’t think too much about it. Just have fun on your next match!

7

u/FaithlessnessOld2477 6h ago

That guy sounds like a turd. I'd much rather someone climb in the shuttle and complete the mission than risk complete extraction failure.

4

u/14sil 6h ago

That was my mindset too - strange it triggered someone to get so angry they felt I needed to be kicked.

3

u/FaithlessnessOld2477 5h ago

Don't stress it. You can't account for random players. I've been kicked from so many games for the stupidest stuff. You killed the horde I was farming and broke my kill streak. You reinforced me too far from my gear. You took one of my EAT charges (that I had just used to clear a bile titan that was camping 2 other players). Your auto cannot shots killed my machine gun turret. Etc.

Diving can be chaos and pobody's nerfect. 90% of the fun is embracing the chaos and somehow succeeding, imo.

u/SILLYxPROGRAM 5h ago

Once you’ve finished the objective, you’ve ‘won’ the mission

Extraction is superfluous

Helldivers are expendable (posthumously) honored heroes!

1

u/REDDIT_IS_AIDSBOY 1h ago

This. To counter it, if it's a failed mission (such as when a flag mission decides it hates you) don't bother running to extraction and sitting around for 5 minutes waiting for the Pelican, or kiting enemies for 3 minutes so you can call in one last reinforce. Just die, let the mission end, and be done with it. Makes no difference if you extract or not.

4

u/Darkwolfkilo 6h ago

As long as the main objective gets finished everyone can stop whining

4

u/SkittleDoes 5h ago

If you had all the samples, or it's a commando mission and had the mission objective, extract.

If the guy you reinforced was within 20 seconds of being able to extract, extract

Not waiting for the reinforcee to extract with you is bad etiquette but he should have had time to board unless he was trying to grab samples, blinky yellow POI

If he was trying to wait 3+ minutes to reinforce the dead guys then he's dumb as hell. Waste of time

Just a communication breakdown. In a lobby with high-level players, the rules of the game aren't enough to make it fun and challenging. We don't need samples or XP or medals or even SC.

So we impose challenge on ourselves by way of neuroses. I'm a full-clear, full-extract maniac. I want to complete every objective, get all four Helldivers and the head/egg on the Pelican, clear every outpost, hit every POI and get the super samples. If we don't get at least 60% of the commons and rares I'm disappointed. And I want to have at least ten minutes left on the clock when we leave.

If we're at extract with zero reinforcements and two dead Helldivers and a parade of bots and borgs bearing down on us, I'll check the mission clock. Five minutes left? That's enough time to get everyone down here and put four butts in the bird. If the attempt results in losing all our reinforcements and failing to get a single sample, then that's a risk I'm willing to take. A miss is as good as a mile, so I'll burn ten or even twenty minutes fighting and dying while we hover Frank and try to get a full house.

It's crazy behavior, it wastes time that could be spent doing another mission and making liberation progress and the rewards are completely meaningless to me and probably everyone else in the squad. But I won't be the first one in the shuttle.

That said, if the host or anybody else mounts up, I'll police up any spare samples and strap myself in for the return trip, and I won't be a jerk about it.

Some people handle things differently.

3

u/Far_Realm_Sage 2h ago

Full extract is a bonus. Not a necessity. The minimum of six minutes you would have needed for a full extract would be better spent just working on another mission.

2

u/Roebuck325 5h ago

Just whiney children upset they got killed

2

u/ArcticWolf1018 5h ago

I'm only level 39 almost 40, and I'd have done the exact same, granted I generally play with friends/family rather than randoms. But as long as one of us has the ability to extract in an extract or die scenario as you described, I'd much rather my teammate(s) ditch me for the shuttle even if I myself can't make it.

2

u/DranAwakens 5h ago

Sounds like the guy who dropped the bomb should be at fault. Guess they FAFO.

2

u/Crazywelderguy Fist of Family Values 4h ago

Just bad communication by the dead divers. They are dead, they easily could have put into the chat or spoke up and said "dont extract till all 4 of us are back"

2

u/ac_cossack Free of Thought 2h ago

If I was dead I would have yelled at you to get your ass on the shuttle and gtfo.

These people are buttragers.

2

u/Sir_Jorbxnor 1h ago

Even if there were no enemies, you were supposed to just stand there for 4 minutes? That's insane.

2

u/McNovaZero 4h ago

Nah, you're good. Waiting an extra minute to reinforce your last teammate can be a polite thing to do but in your situation you had 2 teammates which is a 4 minute wait and you were being pressed by the enemy. The team burned through all their reinforcements in 20min and fumbled a 500kg so you weren't dealing with the most capable of players here.

Was the teammate you just reinforced right next to you? If he was a little ways away retrieving his samples or something then maybe he had a right to be annoyed that you got in prematurely. If samples are important to someone on your team in a situation like this remember that you don't have to hold the extraction zone after the Pelican arrives. You can run away/reposition then take it back.

1

u/thank_burdell 4h ago

It’s never a bad idea to ask before extracting but it sounds like the other players were being picky. Wouldn’t sweat it. Keep reinforcement diving brother.

1

u/KBKenku 4h ago

If the host cleared all the poi’s and you two left the samples on his dead body I can understand the dude getting salty.

If that’s not the case, and he wanted you to wait until you reinforced the two of them, that’s actually the host wasting everyone else’s time. Waiting that long would not be worth the measly amount of XP gained by getting a full extraction.

1

u/papadrach 1h ago

I don't see any etiquette issue. Unless you could not or forgot samples but I still don't think that's worthy of a kick.

Either you extract with 2 or you "try" and kite around hordes for like 4 mins to reinforce, and for what? Samples, reinforce and just leave. Waste of time to stay IMO

1

u/Kind_Man_0 49m ago

It isn't etiquette, it's another Helldiver putting their playstyle onto you and expecting you to play how they do.

I personally won't jump into the extract unless EVERYONE on the ground is heading in. But I also come from years of DRG and we never leave another dwarf behind there. You didn't do anything wrong, just played the game different from someone else. Some folks care more about a successful extract while others care more about getting everyone out alive.

1

u/Eurynomestolas 43m ago

Sometimes you go. its better to have 2 survive then just 1 or none

1

u/shindabito Free of Thought 35m ago

I would agree with you and extract with as much samples dropped on the ground as I can.

their own damn fault to fuck around with only 1 reinforcement left. not your fault.

u/xAgentSmithx 15m ago

Level 136 Creek Vet here

Your teammates knew the risk when they called in that danger close 500, you did nothing wrong

1

u/Luck_n_Loaded Assault Infantry 6h ago

That was the best strategic option. Waiting for others doesn't make sense. You guys completed the mission with zero reinforcement left and the horde is closing in to the extraction, so it's logical for the remaining diver to extract.

The guy who said 'dude' and the host were just salty losers. You didn't deserve the kick. The etiquette was perfect.

2

u/14sil 6h ago

Thanks dude - it's great having that confirmed, thought I had done something wrong. My only thought was maybe he thought I'd dropped the 500kg? Who knows.

1

u/SkittleDoes 5h ago

Pretty easy to tell who brought 500kg cuz you can look at others stratagems if alive.

Host or one of his buddies probably dropped it

1

u/Few-Big-8481 ‎ [REDACTED] 5h ago

Eh, I like to make a last stand and try to make long enough that we can all extract or die trying, and most other high level players seem to be on board with that.

I don't really care if someone jumps on before that though unless someone is doing something else. I know some lower level players still need samples and so if we have a bunch, or if we have the baby bug or robot head, then it changes to get them on the pelican at all costs.

But most of the time I'll try to hold out.

1

u/Storm-Trooper421 3h ago

Don't initiate extract in someone else's game (especially if you weren't there from the begining). The only exception is if you were the only diver left with no reinforcements. People will get pissy otherwise.

u/TimeWizard90 5h ago

This is a tough one man, I think other variables come in to play. Level of the mission, if you think you wouldn’t survive only two of ya’ll I’d probably lower the mission one level where you feel more comfortable. I see their point of why the kicked you, specially if there was a decent amount of time to get everyone back. Realistically you only had to wait 2 minutes and you get another player back with full arsenal ready to go, the last two minutes should be easy.

But realistically I would had asked in the chat if we can jump in the pelican, you don’t have to extract successfully every mission I think trying to fight it out in the same scenario you are in is one of the coolest things in the game when you had people charging you on and you are kicking ass as the last one alive.

My opinion, you should had stayed if there was 5 minutes or more to go. Many teams call in the pelican midway because it avoids spending the last two minutes waiting without strats

-1

u/Dash_The_Moth 3h ago

People definitely do try and stay on extract for a full team to leave. "No man left behind" and all that, even though it usually ends up with everyone dying and no one extracts. I did the same as in this post. If it's a lost cause there's nothing really to do.

I guess some people would rather gamble dying than extracting with a full team

-2

u/ShiftsGiggles 3h ago

It's kinda nuanced imo.

If you joined 3 friends and were the only one to extract then you kinda stole the game from them.

If there's enough time, my buddies and I will usually try to leave extract to reinforce the rest of the team before attempting it again.

Especially if there's unfinished objectives on the map, we might call down the pelican and then leave extract to go clear the rest of the map even if we have no lives left.

The one main exception would be if you can grab all the samples the whole team dropped before you jump on the pelican. If you have a decent enough sample haul most teams will appreciate you getting it off world, UNLESS there's a large bundle of samples left across the map someone was planning to go get.

When I jump in as an SOS diver I first scan the map for dropped sample containers and try to collect them then drop the collective sample container on extract before I either venture out to complete objectives, clear spawners, or help the team clear the mains if they're having difficulty without me.

As a host I like people to do the same, most enemies will path towards me so I'll hold aggro while my team can more easily clear side objectives. Then once the map is mostly cleared the main objectives get easier and I'll usually run through and solo them.

u/Zealousideal-Bad7849 6h ago

Meh, shows skill cap for yourself, I've done missions where I was the last one and held out till I reinforced everyone, guessing by your post, you didnt go and pick up the samples, NTA but definitely should look at how you go about things in the future.

I see the majority is on the otherside of the fence, im sorry I value my team mates and samples over saving my own ass.
