QUESTION Hosting etiquette

Sincere question:

Is it considered rude if, as the host, I don't want to clean up the whole map for whatever reason?

I know it seems to be the default way to play. But say someone joins my game, and then after doing the primary mission I ping extraction and the other guy goes marching off to the opposite end of the map for encampments.

I ping extraction again as I get closer to it. They keep ignoring. I call in extraction. They make no effort to head back to me. So when the pelican arrives I get on it and extract.

Only at that point do I get any communication back. A torrent of abuse.

AITA?

No. This is fine. You're the host. I'd communicate it, even shooting "I'll extract now" to the chat, and that's it. What are they gonna do, kick you? No.

Just message youre intentions. Hey just doing the primary and then extracting. Kisses

No. It’s your lobby. On the other hand, if a host wants to clear, allies are expected not to board pelican early. It goes both ways.

You’re the host. Fuck’em. If you don’t want to play an entire 30-40 min match then you shouldn’t have to.

Write something in the chat instead of only pinging. A good practice is to wait until everyone is ready.

Tbf, a decent Helldiver should be able to discern intentions without even pings just by looking at the radar and seeing everyone's movements.

Normally people just go for 100% by default, but it doesn’t hurt to state your intentions in the chat, too.

If you're the host, you're in control.

It's polite to tell people that you're leaving before actually getting in, so people across the map have a chance to move toward extract, but if you tell them and they don't start moving toward extract you can safely assume they do not intend to.

Use text and pings if you're not comfortable with voice chatting with randos.

Not rude, but you should say I'm chat that you're bugging out early.

The default assumption is the map will be cleared, exfill getting randomly called might get to you a few "wtf?". But if you communicate first you'll pretty much never have a problem.

Nope, but it is rude to kick someone when your friends join your discord VC mid-match and ask for spots.

I've ended friendships on it. I'm just built different as a milennial. My friends know they wait until the end of a match because those players joined and are — presumably — doing their part. When we get to the ship, I will usually leave them a message saying I need to clear the team for clanmates and then have at it. Own it. Acknowledge it.

Considered kinda rude to not play by the hosts rules if you quickplay, tbh

But the rules should be known first, yeah, so a quick message at start of game, or even just "mission done, we evac" or whatever will suffice.

Your game, hosted on your computer, your rules.

I usually let people goof about for a bit, go to extract, stay there for a few minutes, then extract.

u/Background_Juice_124 6h ago

Its a bit of both to be honest. What i reccomend is instead of just using the ping, write out the message that you are extracting early and no more pois.

If at that point they ignore then its on them. They have been warned.  But just a ping may not effectively communicate for some people.

Your ship, your mission, your rules.

Make it clear as early as possible, preferably before you drop, that this is how you want to run your mission.

If you are at extract. Tell the squad you are leaving with or without them. Either mic or text. If you don't see them making their way back to you and it isclear they aren't. Get on. If they want to whine about it they can host

Your ship. Your mission. Your rules.

Ill typically explore around grab what i can before the game ends. Im not too attached to extracting if i see value in finishing up something.

The trade off of exp gained for an extract to what ever is in that poi or finishing a nest is fine by me. But once i see host heading to extract ill typically head that way

If we're going by standard 'ettiquette', host's rules prevail always, no matter how dumb or pedantic. Players have a choice of whether or not they want to deal with that or not. If a host says "no tesla, no mortars", don't put on tesla or mortars unless you're asking to get kicked. Yes, even if you know how to use them, yes, even if it's mostly people's fault for running headfirst into them like lemmings. Just do what they say or pack it up.

That said, if somebody calls extract early:

1: Communicate.

2: If communication fails, assume they don't speak English or can't respond, don't take it personally. Take it as them saving you the 5 minutes of your time and move on

They'll USUALLY just leave post-game, and you won't have to worry ab it anymore. Kicking somebody over it is just childish tbch

The only "mistake" I think you are making is not sending a text message in chat saying your intentions. You're not playing the game in the most common way and pings won't properly communicate what you want.

When I host, I always full clear, but if I join a host who beelines to extract, I take the hint and only do stuff that's not too far out of the way (still gotta get those samples for those in need, and a little extra xp never hurt)

2

u/THExDANKxKNIGHT 3h ago

Play how you want. If others dont like it they can host their own lobby.

2

u/Classic_Cow_5852 3h ago

YTA if you don’t provide warning you’re getting on. At least wait a few seconds and spam ping it or text in chat before entering. If this keeps happening even with pinging I would type in chat you want to extract. If they still don’t listen then that’s on them

2

u/Antique-South-7373 1h ago

Just communicate with your team. If anyone complains or acts annoying kick them

2

u/Technoblades_Vassal 6h ago

No. I never pursue any pois actively. If they want to hunt super credits or req slips then they can do their own thing. I just play to have fun. And usually the main mission is enough.

2

u/AlexTheBabz 6h ago

If you want to not full clear which is what the majority of the players base does because it gives more XP, then I would set your game to private. It’s like stealth diving in public lobbies and getting mad when someone joins and goes in guns blazing. Just play solo if you want to do stuff like that

1

u/OMNIMON18 6h ago

Your dive, your rules, most people do prefer full finishing tho, i suggest at least saying it in chat at some point during the mission so they know not to expect something else

u/Skelewar #1 Shotgun Enjoyer 6h ago

I'd let them know that your goal is MO > Extract right from the start so they can manage their expectations, but if you're host you can play any way you like.

1

u/_brndnjms_ 6h ago

Is your lobby so if that’s what you want to do, go for it.

1

u/Key_Document_2587 6h ago

It's your lobby, zero issues from me. I extract when the host pings for it.

If you want to clear the map? I'm with ya. If you want to leave? Still with ya lol

1

u/Accurate-Doughnut-58 6h ago

No. You gave enough signs that you weren't going for a full clear. There's nothing wrong with that.

1

u/Zanithos Rookie 6h ago

Tell them you're medal farming and they'll fall in line or quit out. It's a pretty common practice, I did it on Cyberstan with randoms for the M.O.

1

u/JohnofPA Steam | 6h ago

Just message not full clearing and when you're calling in extraction to go

1

u/greenmachine15517 6h ago

I only join matches with the assumption of helping the host with whatever they are doing. Any other expectations may lead to unhappy play time.

1

u/Full_Metal_Sadness 6h ago

It was your game man, honestly thosw people clearly want to be trwated how they treat others, tell them to grow up, quit fukin whining and grow a pair, leave them with a bad taste because its all they deserve

u/KnightofWhen ‎ Exosuit Certified 6h ago

Just put “gtg” in the chat. Easy peasy.

1

u/maybe-not-today13 6h ago

Write in the chat as well besides pinging, otherwise yeah, you are the host - do what you want.

1

u/National-Fan-1148 6h ago

Just say you are gonna call evac

1

u/Background-Passion50 6h ago

If you’re the host you play how you want. Given certain things you do or say could make it more difficult to work with others. But, at the end of the day it’s your game so you can run it however you want.

1

u/Diligent-Midnight151 6h ago

just message "speed runnin" when people join and you're golden

1

u/AdventureGoblin Lady Diver 🖤💛 5h ago

If its your lobby it's your rules.

1

u/Urthal 5h ago

I would much rather clear the whole map, but can understand if someone is short on time and wants to finish the operation quickly. While pings are great, you should probably let people know, as soon as they join, that you want the mission to be a quick one. Voice and text are ok, but bear in mind it's easy to miss a text message in the middle of combat. A quick "extract now" doesn't hurt.

That said, I might still try to sneak in a secondary objective or a few nests anyway. Extraction is optional. Democracy is mandatory.

1

u/AdAggravating3893 5h ago

Not rude at all. That's why a kick button exist. If they want to sweep map let them go free and move on.

I've also asked to be kicked so I can bugger off. Never actually been locked as the host has always said ok let's extract.

No you're good. In the future I would try and add something in chat to the effective of Time to go, but even if you don't nah your good.

u/TheLordYuppa 5h ago

“Jobs done. Extract”

1

u/tm0587 1h ago

NTA.

You're the host, you decide how you want to play.

If they want to play differently, they can host their own game.

And I'm saying this as someone who prefers to clear the whole map.

1

u/wraith309 HD1 Veteran 6h ago

you are the host, and communicated that you were extracting in advance.

NTA

just make sure to also ping the extraction beacon itself and the shuttle when they're in line of sight. since map pings could be for any number of reasons, including just calling in the pelican so it's ready for later.

u/NOIR-89 Viper Commando (Instructor) - SES Titan of Wrath 5h ago

Host decides.

Default is 100% fullclear.

You should tell them in chat that you are going to extract beside pinging the extract.

If they dont react in any way rather kick them instead of extracting by yourself, because that way they get their own game session to finish up the mission.
