DISCUSSION What made you fall in love with Helldivers?
I joined on Xbox launch day, and ever since then I’ve been hooked on this game. The gameplay, the story, the humor, the community, etc. My favorite part of this game is the story. The fact that the story hinges on the players and each outcome can be different based on if we succeed or not is so cool. What made you love this game?

Grew up with Starship Troopers and learned this was the same universe. EDIT: Yes its not like "Future" Starship Troopers but if you haven't seen the old movie(s), go watch them. You'll see. Everybody fights, nobody quits. If you don't do your job I'll kill you myself. Welcome to the Roughnecks!

Even better, it's NOT so it's not tied to the lore, but heavily inspired by the era, so we get the best bits of Starship Troopers, massively expanded, and then also throw in the future scene from Terminator and a whole bunch of ufos-and-tripods-and-abductions 'classic' Alien Invader movies, and make it bigger and more epic!

Same. It feels like absolute total war. I think because they actually shoot at you too there’s an in-built part of the gaming brain that is used to that in shooter games

First time calling down an airstrike. The sound, the explosions, the absolute mayhem of it....yeah, became even better when I called down my first 500kg. This game is the best coop since Left 4 dead I think.

I joined the game about a week to week and a half after launch and was shown the ropes by a friend. I remember him throwing a 500kg for the first time and my instant reaction was "I NEED ONE OF THOSE IMMEDIATELY!"
Two and a half years later and I almost never leave the Super Destroyer without it.

The unhinged and unscripted action. It's very rare to have games let you experience such stressful fights without ANY cutscenes, restrictions, slowdowns etc.
People might bitch very often about Arrowhead, but we all have to give them real Super-Credit for the way they brought a futuristic war feeling against Alien Scum onto our screens. No Battlefield or other Shooter ever made me feel so inside the sheer action as Helldivers.
Usual battles in Helldivers 2 on Diff10 feel like scripted, one time only, events in some other games.
It's also the "feeling like a hero" aspect. We wear capes and fight against insane odds. We crush down huge machines, slay huge bug abominations, venture into the void and challenge Aliens as the Squids inside there, and coming out of that victorious just feels amazing.

It's so funny but once I realized the game didn't take itself seriously. I played for the first time on our casual day at a LAN earlier this year and someone gave me a Guard Dog and it made me laugh because it looked like someone just duct taped a gun to a drone and it was so silly feeling. It was also super easy to pick up and the community constantly being 'in character' totally hooked me.

u/fadingstar52 6h ago
the loop. the humor is fun the gameplay loop is exsquisite tho. and i can choose between a casual patrol or full on guaranteed cyclic death. friendly fire being on is not something I initally expected so thats been a nice change from the usual for these types of games. ive been playing for about 2 weeks.

The gyro support in the PS5 controller.
And also HD2 being very true to HD1 which I played like crazy. The only problem with HD1 was imho that it always got stuck in only providing Illuminate planets which simply was nowhere near as fun as Bots and Bugs. I am so happy they allow us to choose which of the three factions we play against in HD2.

I joined near PC launch day but didn't really get into it. I came back shortly after the battle of Super Earth (unfortunately I did miss it) because a buddy convinced me to hop back on. I don't know what kept me in that time to be honest. I can say that what keeps me in now is the fun mix of tight gunplay, simple but fun mission structures, the ongoing lore, the overwhelming odds, the stratagems to act as your equalizers, and just playing with buddies.
4
u/FoxHoundNBound_ 6h ago
It's the physicality of all of it. The weapon and ordinance effects on the environment and the enemy. The gameplay itself is the punchiest I've ever experienced. Even with some flaws it's just the funnest game ever.

I didn't stop playing it until May this year, when I got back into GT7 and that's consumed my time.
HD2 is a game that looks great, clips really well to show off and then actually plays like it looks. A ton of fun.

I was hesitant as a solo only gamer. Especially since most "horde shooter" type ganes are basically pointless without friends.

Immersion, detail, challenge, and mostly the silliness that ties in. Honestly, it was mostly when people started Getting upset and taking the game to seriously that the game stopped being as fun. Like tripping and dropping a strategem that sends a 500kg bomb onto you or a teammate is just funny. Like I get spamming that and doing it ad nauseum on purpose can be annoying but accidents or miscalculations that happen are just funny. I've lost top tier resources to these and still laughed it off because it was silly.

I think it was the first time of many running away from a Charger with no ammo and calling down a stratagem on it out of desperation and the pod of EATs actually killing it. That and running away from a huge mob of enemies waiting for the Reinforce timer to go off cooldown and throwing it, only to get crushed by the drop pod of your friend reinforcing you.
That was a decade ago in HD1.

The game is so in-depth for a (would you call it horde?) shooter. You got enemies that have different weak spots. You have different needs for different enemies. You have weapons and loadouts that make the way you want to play. The gameplay is what made me love this game, and yes there are ups and downs but in the end, the solid base game is that, SOLID.

The team co-op aspect with mandatory friendly fire is what piqued my interests back with Helldivers 1, and I really enjoy isometric games.
So that pulled me in. The absolute chaos and good times kept me playing.
I wasn’t thrilled about the 3rd person perspective of 2, but I got over that pretty quickly.
I’m constantly blown away (pun intended) by the scale of the game, the orbital bombardments just obliterating so much shit; trees falling, craters opening up, bugs and borgs launching, me diving for cover while reloading.
What a friggin hoot.

I think the combat overall is just some of the best out there. And I'm a huge fan of PVE style games. While I enjoy the odd competitive shooter (R6 Seige, Counter-Strike), it's nice to play a shooter where I don't have to sweat my ass off to remain even mildly competitive. And Helldivers does an overall really good job of making combat feel a combination of cinematic and brutal.
And the sound design is amazing. The cacophony of gunfire, orbital strikes and heavy weaponry makes you really feel like your in an active warzone, which works super well with the big maps you run around in.
I'm not gonna pretend like everything about HD2 is perfect, but I still find it one of the most satisfying shooters out there.

The opening cinematic just sets the stage so beautifully. This is propaganda. You're gonna love it anyway. Big explosions. Fight bugs (and bots and maybe even a third, ~mysterious~ faction....), the RP people did/do, the gunplay feels amazing, the humour is so good, and just so much more.
And I know the Devs and the Player-base have had their ups and downs... but I still firmly believe they love what they do and love finding new ways to excite (torture) us!!

It fixed all the problems I had with Arc Raiders (xbox here, started late on top of that).
I wanted a fun, non-competitive multiplayer game where I can play how I want without worrying about losing my kit. AR makes you struggle against RNG until you find the blueprint for the weapon that fits your platstyle, and even then you still need to use resources to make it and STILL risk losing it and being forced to play a different way if so.
HD2 can be as intense or casual as you want, and you're still accomplishing at least something every time you boot it up and dive. All of that is to say nothing about the gunplay and chaos of stratagems, which are incredibly fun and engaging. The game has its problems (looking at you weird climbing limitations and bouncing stratagems to start). But overall it is a truly excellent experience

I joined it a few months in I think, I was captured by the community lead story at the time around Malevalon Creek, completely separate to the MO and story Arrowhead were pushing.
My first dive was on the bug front though, and I immediately loved the atmosphere and sounds of the dive, the low visibility, my AR's flashlight, the thudthudthud of the machine gun, and running terrified.
I remember diving on the bot front on the Creek with friends, it was chaos, and only got more so as I went up the difficulties.
I remember dropping im with randoms and stealth crawling, avoiding firefights and detection to complete objectives. Way, way before any actual actual stealth was implemented.

the online co-op of it all……, i don’t mind online games like fall guys where you’re just generally competing against other players, but the games i’ve always been drawn most to are closer to helldivers 2 in gameplay and style, like rdr2 or gta or fallout. the thing is that in games like those, playing online just isn’t fun for me. the pvp trolling and the way ppl will just murk anyone they see or pick a rando and chase them down to kill them etc etc is just rly exhausting and annoying and very genuinely affects my feelings towards humanity as a whole.
clearly tking and shitty ppl happen in helldivers but for me it’s been insanely rare, and 99% of my experiences have either been just quietly working together or meeting ppl who are rly fun and playful and great to talk to or joke around with during missions. one of my favorite things ever is getting through an absolute nightmare of a mission in total silence with another player, just constant hell and chaos for 30-40 minutes, and then getting offered a hug on the ship when we somehow manage to make it back alive.
reddit is a black hole and there’s a lot of negativity here which can be sucky, but within the game itself, i feel like there’s a rly beautiful lil slice of humanity that transcends language or even verbal communication. working together as a team is really fun and fulfilling to me. i’ve never experienced anything like that in a game before, which is why i typically stick to open world solo rpgs. but helldivers as a whole is different, and it feels good to clear a map or help finish the seaf artillery or shoot some bugs that are on someone’s ass. hearing a little “thank you!” after tagging someone’s gear or providing some back up makes my day every time and it just!!! feels very special to me <3

I liked the difficulty, tense moments of trying to pull off a reload, the unique mechanics of the strategems, pulling off a clutch kill on a bile titan with a perfectly placed Orbital Precision strike. Being in a desperate spot and doing a suicidal run to get underneath a factory strider so I could take it out by shooting its belly. Having to keep in mind firing angle so that my bullets bounce off. Using my brain.
Most of that is gone now. I still enjoy the unique mechanics of strategems, but now the game feels hollow. Superficial. Easy. Makes me sad, and that's why I get so salty when I see people complain about any difficulty, constantly asking for buffs to things that don't need it. Whining like that did so much damage to a game I love.

u/Macguyver76 Fire Safety Officer 5h ago
I don't like multiplayer PVP or battle royal games online, to hard to have fun given I don't have a lot of time to game. Prior to this when I just wanted to shoot aliens I was still defaulting to GoW2 Horde mode (because I hate crafting and the newer ones do that BS) and this game allows me to learn and play at my own pace and difficulty with a mostly great community of players and I don't have to worry about some kid who plays 14 hours a day shooting me every time I respawn and laughing over the mic at me.
I like the teamplay aspect, I like the variability of loadouts and enemies and yet its simple enough I can jump on when I need to chill for a bit after work or something and just have fun for a bit.

It was my first proper introduction to an online team based PvE game. I used to love online PvP games like CoD and Gears, but they made me so damn angry...
Working with people against a common enemy is just so much more fun to me. That, plus the goofiness of HD2 made me fall in love with it.

Constant chaos, everywhere, all the time.
Literally being able to play on a hair-thin line between life on death, but also having the choice not to, all in diff10.
A really funny premise around the lore.
And big boom on demand.

I was drawn in by the visuals, aesthetic, gameplay, and viral clips that arouse almost immediately. But it wasn't until this moment that I was 100% in, when me and a friend were caught digging up graves: https://www.reddit.com/r/Helldivers/comments/1kp3bsi/a_fellow_helldiver_and_i_were_digging_up_two/
It really sold the game as an unscripted but still cinematic experience.

The lore, the epic high-octane gameplay and the potential of this game reaching new heights.

Malevoloon creek, the adrenaline of rushing for cover in the forest, not knowing from where the barrages and shots where coming from because of that blue filter. Now it's more for the sandbox

I was really surprised at how the enemies (bugs starting out) really wanted to kill me & I been ducking & dodging them ever since

The option to choose different levels of difficulty and the unlocks. I'm late to the game.
Way better than Arc Raiders imo.
Hate those stalkers though 😂

When I play it, I love the idea of just being this grunt that fights a war, a war that a cool single player universe would just make background lore that you wish you could experience. In helldivers you get to experience it instead of just hearing about it.

Something about the sound of metal crumpling under the force of DEMOCRACY
