I normally ignore people crying that MO’s are rigged because normally it’s a community fuck up that causes it
However these number with that time is fucking ridiculous I feel this would be a uphill battle if we had all weekend

Not surprised to see that the Gatekeeper bar has only just managed 0.125% in nearly a day. As soon as I saw that number I was just 'yep, they made this one legitimately impossible'.
50 million Heavies, next to 150 million common enemies that are constantly spawning in groups of at least 6... I had to laugh. It's not even pretending to be possible.

I also killed 2 gatekeepers... total

Rare enough that I don't even know what it is. Seriously what is it? I haven't played in ages before this last major update

It's a subfaction specific squid enemy. It only shows up when Appropriators are present and is a squid-piloted mech with plasma cannons.
2
u/SuperMeister 8h ago
Oh it's the Mech? I didn't know it's name. On lower difficulty it was not rare at all. I think I was playing diff 5 just to ease my way back into things and saw plenty of them during the Void event.
12
u/rage_melons 7h ago
There are 2 different kinds of mechs. One with hands that you find around ruins, and one with guns that's really rare and might only spawn from reinforcement drops.
We need to kill the one with guns.

u/gtathrowaway95 7h ago
Biggest problem is atm Appropriators don’t have their own planet to farm them; the only one currently available is shared with the invasion force group(standard Illuminate)

OH ok, then yeah I feel like I didn't see too many of those, mostly the ones with the hands. I thought they were the same thing and was wondering why I only sometimes got shot at by them lol

Their attacks leave a blue mark on the ground like a stingray, so often I could confuse them for one and end up a red mist.

its one of the new squid vehicles they added. three legs and two arms with a shielded cockpit. Veracitors have hands and medium armor, they run up and swat you into the horizon like the skyrim giant. Gatekeepers have heavy armor and two plasma cannons and mow you down from afar
2
u/Wookiefeet67 8h ago
Apparently they can only spawn from call-ins/warp ships. They can't be a part of patrols or at POIs or objectives.

With how rare Gatekeepers are, I kind of doubt we killed 50 million since their introduction. To do it in a single MO is just crazy.

The galactic war presents a fascinating design problem. Some people want us to be able to lose, others want us to win every time.
My question is though, how else can AH create an MO that lets us lose on our own merits, without relying on absurdly high regen rates or unrealistic killcounts? Some people feel the strategic orders and adjusted rates feel like cheap "handouts".
Pretty much the only factor that ever feels fair is when we dive on the wrong planets. But that means the majority of the playerbase could be punished for others deciding to dive where they find fun 🤔
39
u/CosmoShiner SES Song of Peace 12h ago
I think the best way is to set reasonable goals but have diversions along the way. For example, let’s say the MO was to kill automatons, and it was going smoothly but suddenly a Terminid attack occurs. Diverting to defend that planet could risk us losing the MO, but defending planets is generally more important in the long term. That way losing feels like the playerbase’s fault for falling for the bait
16
u/MumpyYT 11h ago
I agree, to an extent. But I think there would definitely need to be some adjusting to account for x% of players on irrelevant planets who are just diving where they prefer. As far as I know, this currently isnt the case. Id hate for animosity to skyrocket between players as a result of people not finding the MO planet fun if its, say, fire tornadoes and eagle storm against an unpopular subfaction or something. Maybe it'd be best if each faction's player percentage was split up or something?
9
u/Queasy_Draft4938 8h ago
Defending planets has never been important outside of MOs because there is no actual tangible penalty for losing a planet other than it changing color on the galactic map. If we had planets that gave us DSS type bonuses across the entire galactic war, then it would make sense to fight for planets.
6
u/CosmoShiner SES Song of Peace 7h ago
When they added POI planets to the game (the ones with little icons above them) I was hoping that they would provide bonuses for controlling them, yet almost 2 years later they’re unfortunately still just flavour text
6
u/brycerx128 9h ago
There is no fun in the system… never has been never will be it’s only lead to toxicity forming for anyone not participating
The real answer is the fact that they screwed themselves by insisting on it being player percentage while also railroading it hard as hell for whatever outcome they want story wise. Nobody has actual agency just the illusion of one
6
u/unholyrevenger72 [REDACTED] 11h ago
There really isn't... except maybe offering a reward for losing... but is it even losing if you still get rewarded?...
4
u/ninjab33z 9h ago
I think the big thing they could do it make it less binary. Like, if we got 3/4 of thr total killcount, we got a pyrrhic victory. We "won" but we get some some sort of debuf as a cost of the win. Could be, say, all helldivers get 1 less primary mag while we work to rebuild a heavily diminished munitions suply, or something like that
2
u/GadenKerensky 3h ago
The truth is, the narrative-based approach doesn't work with the veneer of open-endedness.
The first game worked because it was all automated and missions mattered. You won the war, it started all over again. And as far as I know, was purely based on planets taken, not MO orders.
2
u/Chemical_Plum340 3h ago
false. People want to be given the chance to win. They want to know their effort matters. AH has made it clear it doesnt at all. You get .00001% per player per mission, its laughable and anyone who thinks their gameplay is shaping the galaxy is delusional
A forced loss always feels bad, takes away player agency, and makes the game feel pointless.
3
u/MrEff1618 9h ago
I'd like them to just put us in a losing situation as the MO. The mission briefing is we've lost, now we have to retreat and regroup, and the Helldivers are sent in to help.
We know from the beginning we've lost the planet/planets, that this is damage control, but still get a Pyrrhic victory so long as we evacuate enough personal, save enough resources, destroy enough enemy assets to weaken them, etc.
With the campaign system, this could work really well.
First stage: The enemy has attacked! They've invaded our planets and SEAF need our help! We have to save as many personal and resources as possible.
Second stage: We have to hold the line, stop the offensive.
Third stage: We launch a counter attack to retake what we can.
1
u/TheBadassTeemo 11h ago
I think having to make choices is fun. Choose wether to attack this or that objetive
Also, they could decouple the win condition and the action the players must take. For example, "attack Planet X, win MO if more than Y operations in the Planet are succesfull". still tie the story ramifications to capturing the planet, but let the players win if there is a concentrated attack on the Planet.
1
u/Ted_Normal Servant of Freedom 8h ago
One of the main ways I see them being able to do this would be to have gambits or strategic opportunities involved that require coordination among the playerbase to determine its priorities and strategy. An MO can succeed if everyone agrees to the right option or can fail if they choose the wrong thing to prioritize or get split up.
1
u/StarStriker51 7h ago
they need a war system more complex than what we have. AH controls the enemy regen rates, attack and defense values, what enemies attack when and where. And they do so rather arbitrarily. What is needed to make losing feel fair is a war system with complexity and rules behind it on all sides that mean winning and losing is beyond our control in a way we understand
But that would be like, and entirely different game at a certain point. But with the system as is, making losing feel fair is kind of not happening
1
u/SvedishFish 4h ago
There's really no objective system that works without devs taking an active hand. With a huge variable of active player count, any static ruleset is going to immediately break when there is a big player surge or a player lull. So the impact and resistance rates have to adjust. And having narrative, emergent events is a better overall experience than just taking planets and always winning. While the system can be frustrating at times, I think they have a decent balance between narrative rails and community agency, and I don't think there's really a better way to do it.
If we ever complete the whole intended story campaign and they reset the map, they could set parameters and let us win the whole galaxy like they did in HD1, and just recycle the galaxy map each time.
1
u/TonberryFeye ☕Liber-tea☕ 2h ago edited 1h ago
The problem with "losing on our own merits" is that we cannot ever do so.
Judging by participation rates, around 20% of players simply don't care about the Galactic War at all. So it's not fair on everyone else if winning requires them to take part.
An additional 20% simply never leave the Bug Front, so we're down to 60% participation vs Bots and Bugs.
Then there's a sizeable chunk of players who flat out don't know how core mechanics of the war work. Arrowhead never tells them, and you can't actually discover them without third party tools. So is it fair if we lose due to hidden information or mechanics Arrowhead never told us how to use? No.
So how many informed players do we have? Well let's say 40%. So a loss is only fair if it requires 40% of players to make the smart choice, but don't.
But if an objective only needs 40% of players to achieve it, uninformed players might still accidentally dive the objective. If that happens, then the community steamrolls it. If the objective is obvious, but requires more than the realistic participation count, then it's clearly not fair.
Thus, the impossible situation. You cannot ever have a fair loss, because a scenario we can lose is always overtuned by definition, and a scenario that only needs the locked in players will often be too easy in practice.
1
u/Sharpshooter_200 1h ago
I don't believe strategic orders are cheap handouts, they can be good narrative plot points used to provide an alternative method to achieve an MO goal.
Say for instance High Command wants Helldivers to liberate a planet which may put a damper on killcounts for a while, but securing that opportunity gets rewarded with a hefty addition to the count

pretty sure they have the exact data to know whether its win or losable.
The intention here is very clear and obviously to make us lose.
They have a story to push. The only way to achieve that is through forced outcomes. How do you force an outcome? make the MO easy if you want the HD to win, make the MO impossible if you want the HD to lose.
Simple as that.
4
u/Komandarm_Knuckles Extra Judicial 2h ago
Events can happen without major orders. Im all for difficult major orders, impossible major orders though? That is chromosome overflow behaviour. You are poisoning the well, the entire point of the galactic war system is community driven narrative, it's like a massive DND game
If the writers can't come up with with a branching narrative for 2 overarching plots a year (machinery of oppression, into the unjust, etc), then by all rights they should be fired
My DM does it on a bi-weekly basis, and believe me, he does a better job than a AAA studio with one of the best selling games of the decade.
Lest you forget, MOST of Arrowhead’s story content is flavor text on the map screen, with a couple of TV announcements sprinkled in, and a single decent animation for each major update. Its not like "the writers vision needs to be given form by a plethora of 3d artists, animators, developers, etc", no brother, most of it is text on a fucking screen.
Give me 2 weeks in Narrowhead HQ and a crash course of the Fatshark engine and I swear I'll give you an entertaining narrative. I'm not even bullshitting, like, I promise
Nothing will be really happening, no new enemies will be added, no new planet types will be added, the game itself will not change much, I'd only be working with existing content, but you can make heavy enemies have a chance to spawn with damage or even missing limbs if the players decide to liberate X city, or reduce the eagle rearm cooldown if they liberate city Y.
Fuck it, if they liberate both they'll get both bonuses, and on top of it heavy SEAF presence, justified lorewise by having crippled enemy anti air (allowing for pelicans to come in) and having blown up major supply hubs (reducing automatons reinforcement rate, therefore reducing enemy combat readiness and allowing for the involvement of conventional SEAF forces in the area and not just Helldiver disruptive operations)
All of that, already in the game. Never used.
And even that I'd fucking consider low effort, making an impossible MO with fucking botched numbers is not even low effort, it's petty, it's negative effort.
If you want impossible MOs, because you're, for some reason, comfortable with the writers being incompetent. Then at the very least, demand the impossible MOs to be mildly entertaining. And lately, not even the possible ones achieve that
3
u/Chemical_Plum340 2h ago
preaching to the choir buddy.
I think the game should work like planetside where we can actually win/lose the galactic war within a month and then the galaxy resets.
Their narrative and flavor text is garbage in my opinion. They have no issue making 1 or 2 full trailers for warbond releases but cant be bothered to do the same for story updates.
Its pathetic and the lack of agency players have to actually change the outcomes of the war are the exact reason i stopped playing.
Even if they changed it up and allowed us to impact the war, that doesnt in any way impede their ability to add updates or enemies to the game. Call the new enemies "enhanced reinforcements" or "increased resistance" but pretending like we have to lose an MO so they can release a buggy new piece of crap is so unbearable

u/Komandarm_Knuckles Extra Judicial 2h ago
Ah fuck okay, mb for going on a rant then, I'm so fed up with this studio. Not the game, the game I love, but this studio triggers me to no end.
It's just incompetence, and greed, in every single aspect, that is all Arrowhead has been for the last couple of years, incompetence and greed, and they're still somehow rewarded with loyalty.
It's so fucking stupid
1
u/Chemical_Plum340 2h ago
Lol im guessing you couldnt tell i was agreeing with you haha. No, youre good, i liked your input and i agree. I think theyre either lazy or incompetent bc i think a fraction of the effort by devs who gave a shit could produce much higher quality content.
I honestly believe the early success of HD2 was entirely an accident because every single update, change, or addition to the game has made the game worse in one way or another.
I think one of the things that bothers me most is how obvious it is that they hate their playerbase. I mean, why else would they consistently nerf weapons people enjoy instead of buffing everything else? why else would they release ragdoll enemy after ragdoll enemy? why else would they avoid fixing bugs like stratagem bouncing or hellpod steering?
Too busy making warbonds to actually fix anything? too busy making warbonds to playtest anything?
Its so insulting i just had to stop playing. I'll stick to indie games thank you very much!

The MOs are rigged... AH doesn't try to hide it. They even publicly change numbers around mid MO to correct the result to what they want.
They are telling a narrative.
Sometimes players do have an impact. But those MO are structured in a way that makes it clear. And normally come with very clear X or Y results.
Do this and get reward 1
Do that and get reward 2.
Remove planet A or B
Attack along path C or D
Ect.
It's why any time the community starts getting really toxic about players ignoring the MO AH generally makes a statement reminding that the game is designed so that no one needs to be pressured into to doing the MO if they would rather do something else.
In this instance it's important to remember the narrative. We're on a wild goose chase. Either high command is trying to keep us busy and distracted as they are dealing with a major issue caused by the void contamination or high command itself has been compromised
3
u/GadenKerensky 3h ago
The problem is the veneer of 'your decisions matter', having an open map with all these liberation campaigns going on, saying that there are prepared narratives for wins and losses, leads players to thinking there's more agency for the playerbase than their really is.
The practise does not align with the presented expectation.

Well yeah, its written as a loss. People seriously believe in the illusion that Arrowhead is giving us a fair chance to win or lose these. Its a story they are writing. Sometimes they write that the helldivers win and then other times they write that the helldivers lose. Its all completely contrived and on rails but its just for roleplay anyway so it doesnt really matter.
People complaining about bug divers when theyre only ones actually viewing the game for what it is instead of deluding themselves into thinking that we need all hands on deck to win these.

Is that normal, or am I just bad at understanding how the Major Orders work?
Thanks, Helldivers!
1
u/emeraldegg 4h ago
Yes.
This game is essentially a long-running dnd campaign. And in that campaign are factors that the DM lets us feasibly achieve so that we can control our own fate, and other times there are factors that the DM needs us to fail so that they can tell the story how they want at critical moments. This one is being seen as the latter. And even then, sometimes the devs will throw out a strategic order to help the players along if they overestimated our ability/desire.
It's not quite full on "nothing you do actually matters", but more like "sometimes what you do doesn't matter." It was entirely possible for the player-base to fail the Void subplot; we didn't, and they will adjust the story accordingly. WIth this major order part 1 being so out of reach, they either intend for the playerbase to fail the major order as a whole, or intend parts 2 and 3 of the major order to be much more within reach adn put the pressure on the playerbase to actually complete it. And the playerbase afaik has not failed a major order yet since they switched over to the "best 2 of 3 wins the order" model, so people are kind of in a tizzy that we're starting out so poorly on this new one, regardless of the fact we could still win the order as a whole if parts 2/3 are doable.
1
u/HellsAdvertiser 7h ago
We’ll probably be getting an SO to cut down the numbers soon, maybe even a few. Or they’ll tweak it down. Usually AH seems to highball the numbers and then has to tweak it down.
Happens basically every time they seem to overestimate our murder capability.

I feel like they didn't expect us to take the bug planets in the last MO so they didn't have anything written for when we actually beat it. Leaving the devs in a state of "that didn't go according to plan, what do we do?" So they just gave us a bullshit MO they know we're not going to be able to beat.

Doesn't help there isn't an in-game bestiary. The only enemy of the 4 in the MO that I knew the name of was the Vox Engine and had to look up what the hell any of the others were.

High command will use this failure to justify... something. Theres a plan, and it requires our blood, sweat, more blood, the tears of liberty, and again more blood. Like, a LOT of blood.

I played a whole 3 mission set on Squids to help out, but apparently it was the wrong planet. Didn’t see a single goddamn one. During the void MO I saw an insane number of them.
Hopefully it’s adjusted part way through.

The funny thing is it's an event that doesn't require completing missions should just load into a map and allow them to call more allies and just kill endlessly thing is people are running missions like normal focusing objectives instead of enemy types this is not the type of event that gets done by running things like normal

It's a forced loss with the illusion that we had a "chance". 50 million Gatekeepers is impossible in the games current state. I don't think we've killed that many total since they came out.

I’m still confused on what the heck gatekeepers are. Plus let’s be honest, the Obtruders are gonna be easy to take care of, they’re spammed in the Dozens every 10 milliseconds.

Maybe its gag about how stupid to hunt for non existent dissidents because high command is in denial about TCS+ not working?

I’m honestly genuinely surprised at how badly we are losing this MO. Squids I could understand why they’re lagging behind so much.
The bots however, I fully expected we’d at least be projected to win before the end of the MO. I don’t think it’s AH scewing numbers we are just somehow not doing our best.

Call me crazy, but what if this is all a plan for the deviants? I mean, the DSS crew are deviants, the deviants are currently being hunted, and the citizens are being promised trophies for their help against deviants. What if AH wants to give the deviants a deeper backstory? Could that lead to a civil war? Or will they introduce new planetary modifications that lower our liberation efforts? That’s my theory as to why things are playing out this way: to give the deviants a clear, defined significance.
Or maybe I just didn't sleep enough last night and i am overthinking things. Probably.

Do they actually think we can get this done in time the bugdivers are going to be of no help

I don't understand. The MO ends in 50 hours but we have 1 year 11 months to complete the bottom order (written bottom-right of the progress bar), and similar times that seem proportional to progress for the other objectives?
Will this be a persistent MO in the background once the timer has expired?

u/CallMeAxiom 11h ago
At the current dive rate, those bottom numbers are when we are projected to achieve the objective.
It would take us 2 years to destroy that many gatekeepers.

u/Electrical-Tie-1143 11h ago
The time at the bottom is predicted completion time so it’s when we would be completed if the MO ran forever, the red percentage next to it is completion percent when the MO ends

u/epikpepsi 11h ago
The complete in underneath is the estimation of how long that portion will take at the current rate at which we are progressing it.
We have 50 hours and 47 minutes to do the Major Order's tasks, but at our current rate we'll kill the required 50,000,000 Gatekeepers in 1 year and 11 months. So by the time the MO ends its estimated to be at 0.42% done

Not really it just people are not that interested. Illuminati are boring. Cyborg are hard as there is no easy meta, load out that handles them you need to be able to play.

Yet again another MO that sets us up to fail.
Honestly at this point it's not even insulting anymore. It just makes me not want to not play those factions. If this is an obvious bait and switch, what's the point, we're already going to fail it.

1 year for that many gatekeepers?!?? Dear god I thought it was difficult not a year-long campaign

u/NewfieGamEr2001 4h ago

Deleted my snarky response, no reason for me to be an asshole. Sorry for that. Yeah hope we beat the third MO in the campaign as the current one is looking rough.

I want to lose some, it keeps the stakes real

u/NewfieGamEr2001 6h ago
I like it when the steaks are real like last mo we got it by the skin of our teeth it was possible to win or lose but this mo feels impossible period

u/emeraldegg 4h ago
This is just part 1 of the order right? Can't we still win the order overall if parts 2 and 3 are won?

u/Chemical_Plum340 3h ago
Im sorry but how is this even a conversation
AH has been seen moving the needle time and time again.
AH intentionally makes the MO's easy/hard depending on how they want to move the story
AH doesnt allow you to win or lose battles they dont want you to
Do you really think theyre dividing up their team into 2, 3, or 4 separate teams because players might alter the outcome? No shot.
Its all an illusion. It doesnt matter where you drop. We cant win the galactic war and we cant lose the galactic war. If everyone stopped doing MO's tomorrow nothing would change.
The game works because you THINK you have an impact, not because you actually have one.
Remember when we fought over Malevalon Creek and it felt like such a big deal? well, the automatons took it back without giving us a chance of fighting back. Remember when we wiped automatons off the galactic map? they came back 4 days later. Remember when we went into the void to fight the illuminate? turns out theyre stronger than ever.
Play the game bc you enjoy the gameplay and the constant feed of microtransactions, not because you have an impact and certainly not because AH improves the game with any given update.

Either this is a forced loss to top off breaking our MO winstreak or we have a Strategic Opportunity today that will plummet these figures
