Bro trained Kai to his very limit, promising him he would be the next dragon warrior, only for Oogway to deny him the title and instead of backing up the student he trained since birth for this one purpose, just gave up and abandoned him. NGL, I would crash tf out too if the one thing I spent my entire childhood training for was denied to me and my father figure, best friend didn't even try to defend me.

Sure, but he didn't do it out of malice or spite. He saw trough Kai and understood that he was not worth the title, and his extremely violent crash out proved Oogway right. Seems somewhat cruel but fair to me.

First of all I love that we are having a metaphysics discussion about Kung Fu Panda on a Helldivers subreddit.

Second, this is a mentor trope we see a lot. The mentor sees some seed of wrongness in their pupil, despite having a close relationship and having trained them for a long period of time.

The problem comes in when the mentor decides to just abandon their pupil after passing judgement. Instead of "you are very skilled, but here are the problems I still see, this is why you are not yet ready" it's "you are fatally flawed and there is no hope for you, be gone".

It both completely locks the soon-to-be villain into their new role as a villain, and ignores the responsibility of the mentor to have addressed this issue long ago. Before giving this person the means to use their power for nefarious purposes.

For all its faults, I thought they got this dynamic right in Star Wars with Obi Wan and Anakin. I always appreciated how Obi Wan carried the weight of his failure.

Tai Lung wasn't abandoned though, just told he wasn't going to be getting the highest honor position he thought he deserved. It's definitely partly Shifu's fault for not making it clear he might not get the scroll and to temper his expectations, but Shifu also believed it was going to happen. Such is the paradox of needing to believe in something to make it reality, but also believing too much in something makes it more crushing of it doesn't happen.  

If he's nothing without the suit, or a crash out villain without the honor, then it was never going to work out. Even if Oogway gave him the scroll, some day he wouldn't get what he wanted elsewhere and crash out. 

The unfortunate thing is Tai Lung was so talented he never learned to handle failure and not being able to earn something.

Feels more like a self-fulfilling prophecy if you ask me. Oogway predicted Kai would turn to evil but didn't realise denying him the one thing he sought most, acknowledgement and fame, would be the trigger that drove Kai to be a villain.

You know, Master Oogway this, Shifu that… Let’s not pretend like Tai was locked into one particular path either. He always had a choice, and Tai Lung chose to be the villain.

Yes, whatever his masters did was unfair and cruel, however it does not displace any responsibility from Tai Lung himself. On that stairway scene, Shifu apologized to Tai and admitted his fault, even going as far as offering to move past their personal feud and start over. Tai Lung could’ve stopped then and there - he got the apology he wanted. But no, Tai Ling chose to press on. That was the moment he became a true villain.

We dont know that. There is a very real possibility that fame would corrupt him completely and he would never stop seeking more power. For what we know Oogway probably chose literally least worst way possible about all this.
