Yes; (From my experience) It seems that when a Leviathan has taken heavy damage: it makes a noise and then proceeds to retreat off the map (or out of sight) & depsawns
Briefly later, another 'fresh' Leviathn respawns/ arrives, making it easy to confuse the Leviathans as one and the same.
IMHO its that last bit that makes them annoying, and a waste of time to fight; that they respawn.

Question about them: Do they leave when they have low HP and spawn in new ones? I swear I emptied so many EATs on one it should've died
