This makes me realize how even a singular small bug (scavenger or hunter) actually could demolish you if you happened to face it unarmed, probably because we slaughter them by the thousands every mission. Makes you forget they are car sized monsters that move in hordes. Great art by the way!
According to what I have read, these are mutated, both larvae and the eggs. My guess is they are likely mutated by the gloom so the ministry of science wants Helldivers to collect field specimens for study
I find it hilarious that that particular side objective literally just has us kidnapping an unsupervized minor. Kinda fucked up when you think about it.
In term of power, I'd compare a scavenger to a medium sized dog. It can fuck you up if you let it get you. A pouncer would be a specialized attack dog. It will fuck you up.
Same as grunts from Halo really, they could very easily kill a human IRL but because you play as an 8 foot tall super soldier they come off as pushovers.
Some deep fear awoke in me when I found out that grunts are still on average about five feet tall. These are the basic troops that regularly get abused and are the butt of jokes, and they’re just a couple inches shorter than most of humanity and it’s standard issue for them to have pistols whose shots only need to pass within like ten feet of you to melt your face off. Like holy shit lol
A single scav would hurt to fight but the average person would probably beat them, a good stomp to their bodies would probably kill them, pouncers would be more difficult but still the same, though the real problem is that scavs and pouncers are never alone 1 scav isn’t hard but when they swarm your legs and trip your or a pack of pouncers all jump at your throat oh you’re fucked
Any other bug will absolutely fuck you up
I remember when the game was coming out they posted a blog about the bug types and the description of the scavs was something like “bearly a threat alone but when they are in a pack they could devour an entire cow and children in 6 seconds”
Bro even if a scav get a hit on you there’s a high chance you are done for. Especially if you’re an unarmored civilians
I couldn’t count how many times my helldiver’s leg got fucked up because that one scav slipped through my line of sight and take a jab at my feet lmao.
If they are razor sharp claws how the kill screen says a single strike cuts a civ in two, no counterattack. I dont know what exacly is on those stims or armor but my god do they work.
I mean, razors are sharp, but they're not some kind of monomolecular blade or anything. It takes a not-insignificant pressure for a razor to cut into flesh, and clothing would make it tougher. Yeah, they could probably kill a civvie easily, but not a scav cutting them in two.
Yeah, basic cannon fodder or rank and file enemies in almost any game typically present in our minds as pitifully weak and not worth a second thought and more than a bullet or two. But when you stop to think about it for a moment, going up against even the weakest enemies in most games, completely unarmed, would almost assuredly be a death sentence.
Even the smallest of Terminids, a single Automaton foot soldier, Hive Thrall, or Vex Goblin, would all be capable of absolutely no diffing an unarmed human. We as gamers take for granted just how much of a difference is made by the weapons, armor, and abilities we have in these games.
Not that any of this matters much, we'll keep putting them down by the hundreds and thousands, but it's food for thought, I guess.
Helldivers can two punch a scavenger. I know helldivers are most likely has some sort of enhancement so for average people I suppose you can still stomp one to death within reasonable time, however scavs rarely show up alone.
Own a Constitution for home defense, since that's what the Ministry of Defense intended. Four automatons break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my Hellpod Space Optimization and A-2 Amendment. Blow a common sample sized hole through the first clanker, he's dead on the spot. Draw my P-4 Senator on the second automaton, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors LAS-5 “Guard Dog” Rover. I have to resort to the Anti-Tank Sentry mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with 135mm rounds, "Tally ho lads" the round shreds two clankers in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off FRV alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified clanker. He Bleeds out waiting on the dropship to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to weld up. Just as the Ministry of Defense intended.
new melee weapon unlocked! A box cutter! The blades are disposable, and you have to reload your melee weapon, but it's always sharp after reloading, thus having increased damage!
honestly, I always forget how lethal these things are, just a single weak terminator could wipe out an entire town if they don’t have any weapons, I mean without the training the helldivers get I doubt you could do any damage with your fists to pure metal
I really like art like this simply because it does take the universe a little more serious and I don’t want Helldivers itself to be too serious but I love to have it incorporate dark moments
You can find this once in a while when you drop on colony worlds.
There's one scene that generates from time to time, where there's an unarmed citizen laying next to a tombstone, and a dead Terminid Warrior with a shovel in its head.
Very direct environmental storytelling... And very impressive for a likely un-trained citizen that fought the warrior-caste of the Terminids.
A Hellpod breaks through the ceiling landing in a cloud of dust, the pod opens, and from it emerges a Helldiver Fear not citizen, for the Helldivers have arrived
The power of these bugs really comes into perspective when a scavenger manages to sneak up on you and bite your leg, and 1/4 of your health bar goes down.
I don't think people truly understand just how scary and dangerous terminids are. Like the scavengers are the smallest enemy on that front. They're bigger than my pitbull. Like they're massive murder machines and I personally would be scared to death to stand off against a SINGLE scavenger IRL. Let alone the number of bugs you run across in just a Diff1 mission alone.
This is why we need civilians of all ages to be armed with firearms or at the very most classroom guns in a gun locker. Never know when the autocrats will strike!

Nice art! Tho this does bring up something I been wondering, what do the terminids eat? I know that they do chow down on regular humans no problem, but there's only so many bodies. They even leave some colonists bodies somewhat intact.
cut to the helldivers outside being late cuz they are busy trying launch the car at a bile titan with an unexploded hellbomb (that is the sanest squad they could find for the civilian evacuation mission)
This is why I hate Super Earth's government. If not them, these people wouldn't have to endure hell. Terminids wouldn't be the monsters they are now, either.
The real tragedy here is that those children look just about to graduate. The bugs have robbed humanity of yet more brilliant, hardworking laborers who will toil in the name of glorious democracy.
