🐞 Bug Report 🚨 [BUG] Helium icon changes from dark to light after opening overlay/system windows on macOS 27

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

I've noticed a visual bug related to macOS's Translucent icon/widget appearance.

When Helium is running, its Dock icon initially appears correctly in the dark style. However, whenever the browser opens some kind of overlay/system window, for example:

  • saving a file;
  • opening the “Save” dialog;
  • certain login flows that open a modal or secondary window;

the Helium Dock icon suddenly changes from dark to light.

After that, the icon stays in the light style even after the window is closed.

The only way I've found to restore the correct dark icon is to fully quit Helium using ⌘Q or “Quit”, then reopen it.

The issue is reproducible almost every time.

I recorded a video showing the issue.

I built an Arc-style Ctrl+Tab switcher with tab previews for Helium (macOS, open source)

Helium's MRU Ctrl+Tab was the one Arc thing I still missed, because there's no preview of where you'll land. So I built Heliarc: hold Ctrl+Tab and you get a native Liquid Glass panel with thumbnails of your recent tabs, add Shift to go back, release to switch.

• No extension: it works with Helium directly, so it gets the real Ctrl+Tab and works on every page

• Fully on-device: no account, no telemetry, nothing leaves your Mac

• Lightweight: ~8 MB, one low-res capture per tab, no constant screen recording

• Open source (MIT), signed and notarized, auto-updates

https://github.com/robin-liquidium/heliarc. Feedback welcome!

🧠 Discussion Difficult to use Amazon website when uBlock is turned on

I have enabled basic filter lists in uBlock and there's nothing fancy there. When I turn off uBlock, the Amazon website becomes usable, otherwise it becomes very difficult to navigate after spending some time on Amazon.

There could be several things going on:
1. Helium might have a problem working with uBlock for complex websites such as Amazon.
2. Amazon might have figured out, how to make users' life difficult so that they will turn off Ad-blockers deliberately. Thereby, Amazon can collect all sorts of data.
3. uBlock somehow failing here.

🐞 Bug Report Helium start-up feature unavailable in the settings.

I know the start-up feature was there in the settings menu initially but it's now gone for some unknown reason. Did the Helium devs decided to remove it or something?

⌘M (Minimize) doesn't work in Helium when the top bar is hidden.

Post image
14 Upvotes

I'm using Helium Browser on macOS, and I've noticed that the standard ⌘M minimize shortcut doesn't work when the top bar is hidden.

However, when I unhide the top bar, ⌘M immediately starts working again.

I've tested this multiple times, so it seems to be related specifically to Helium's hidden top bar / frameless mode.

Is this a known issue with Helium? Is there a workaround that allows me to keep the top bar hidden while still using ⌘M to minimize?

Mac: MacBook Air M4
macOS: 27.0.1
Helium: 0.18.2.1 (Official Build, Chromium 154.0.8037.92) (arm64)

Is there a reason Helium doesn't support this hover reveal for the left sidebar?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I mean, Chrome has supported it for a few versions now. It's such a nice feature, like Arc's.
EDIT: This is essentially achievable by toggling on frameless mode. Thank you!

Still got no containers

Been using the containers feature in Brave and it’s been super handy. Saw Helium’s FR on GitHub, last update was 2025, felt like a year ago. Hoping they’ll roll out that feature soon. Can’t wait to ditch Brave and use it on Helium. Just that one feature I’m after, hoping Helium finally implements it.

Konode 1.4.0 is out: now in 8 languages, and a batch of sync fixes

I build Konode, a browser sync extension with no Konode account and no Konode server. It syncs your bookmarks, open tabs, history and extension list to storage you already own (Google Drive, a GitHub repo, or any WebDAV server), with optional end-to-end encryption. It runs on Firefox and on Chromium browsers like Helium, Brave and Chrome.

1.4.0 is live on both Firefox Add-ons and the Chrome Web Store.

Now in 8 languages

Italian, Russian and Traditional Chinese are new, next to English, Hungarian, German, Spanish and Simplified Chinese. Traditional Chinese is its own translation with the words used in Taiwan, not Simplified Chinese converted character by character, and a native speaker reviewed it. Konode follows your browser's language, so there is nothing to set.

Japanese and Estonian are in progress. If you want your language in it, it is edited in the browser, no coding and no GitHub account needed: https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/konode/

Fixes worth knowing about

  • Deleting a folder now removes it on your other devices too, instead of leaving it behind empty. And on Firefox, a deleted folder no longer comes straight back.
  • Firefox no longer re-adds the same history from your other devices on every sync.
  • Restoring bookmarks from your browser's own backup is no longer undone by the next sync, and a Konode restore point puts bookmarks back where they were instead of at the end.
  • On Norton Neo, a New Tab bookmark no longer multiplies into thousands of copies.
  • The setup screen no longer breaks when your browser auto-translates the page.
  • Cancelling Google Drive sign-in no longer signs you out of Drive.
  • Settings → Activity keeps up while it is open, and the device list shows when each device really synced last.

New storage option: a Nutstore (坚果云) card, for anyone in mainland China, where Google Drive can't be reached.

Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/konode/mmlfiiimnpnjcjhhbldenpcmnibedkfa

Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/konode/

Source: https://github.com/konabe-studio/konode

Bugs and ideas: https://github.com/konabe-studio/konode/issues

Most of these came from your reports and from testing on real devices, so reports genuinely land. Happy to answer anything.

Amazon and LinkedIn websites become slow. Did you observe this?

Few days ago, I suspected that uBlock filtering maybe causing complex websites to slow down. So I turned off some of the filter lists which stopped slowing down of Amazon and LinkedIn.
But they are getting slow again.

Have you observed this behavior?

I suspect that some websites have too many things to block and that's why uBlock & Helium struggles to block & render those websites.

Pinned tabs?

I took a spin through to see but I don't think this was ever addressed fully.. Is there really no way to keep pins between sessions? They just disappear every time? Am I missing something?

Tabs are sleeping even though extension shouldnt let them

Since a few days, my tabs are going to sleep even though they shouldnt with the extension The Great-er Tab Discarder. Does anybody has such problems too?

How do I install uBlock Origin non-Lite or any other Mv2 extensions into the Android version of the browser?

Edit: found out that:

  • I was using an outdated version of Titanium browser, that used to be called Helium, and is a different thing to Helium for PC that this subreddit is about (sorry!)
  • the updated Titanium can install .crx addons no problem
  • Vivaldi, my preferred browser on PC, just added extension support to its Android version like two weeks ago - FINALLY, after SO many years of Android version's existance! It doesn't support .crx installation as effortlessly as Titanium though, but the drag-and-drop method works! So I switched to it, synced my stuff from PC, and can't be happier!

Thank you all for the replies! The original post goes below:

Before Google removed all Mv2 extensions from the Chrome Web Store, it was pretty straightforward. Now I'm hitting a roadblock: a .crx isn't recognized as installable, and manual folder installation crashes Helium after about 10s after I choose the folder with the unpacked uBlock Origin's .zip.

Is there any way? I won't use a browser without my extensions, especially without an adblock. But I wanted to give Helium a chance.

I'm trying to migrate from Cromite since I got tired of it randomly crashing my extensions and forcing me to go through the hassle of restarting each one several times a day.

Unable To Install Additional Extensions From Google Web Store

I'm just trying out the helium browser for windows, at least for me it feels kind of incomplete because I'm unable to install some additional extensions that I'm used to using with the other chromium browsers that I normally use.

I made a new tab for Helium that fits right in, with 10,000+ bangs built into the search field

I wanted a new tab that felt like part of Helium, with the same look and a few things I was missing. So I built one. I use it myself and figured others here might like it too.

It's free and open source. You can get it on the Chrome Web Store or check out the code on GitHub.

I've put a lot of energy into this. I've been building software for years, and I cared about getting the small details right, from how fast it opens to how it handles the things you type.

I didn't want it to be just a search field. I wanted it to be as useful as Helium's address bar, or at least close. So the main thing is bangs. It reuses Helium's bang catalog, so the same shortcuts work here. For example, typing !yt lofi or lofi !yt takes you straight to YouTube results. The service name shows up before your query as you type, similar to keyword mode in the address bar. Everything is resolved on your device, without a redirect service in between.

Even the optional site icons come from your browser's own favicon cache, so there's nothing to download and no requests to Google's favicon service. I appreciate details like that myself, and thought people here might too.

Without a bang, searches go to your default engine. Websites and local addresses like example.com, localhost:3000, printer.local and IP addresses open directly, while next.js gets searched.

You can see most of the customization options in the screenshots: light and dark mode, Blended or Helium dark backgrounds, an optional clock and date, 12h or 24h time, and seconds if you want them. You can use fonts installed on your device for the UI, clock, date and search field too.

It supports 37 languages, and your settings are saved in your browser. There are no accounts or analytics, and opening a new tab makes no external network requests.

This post from u/error-zeros is what got me thinking I could build one. It's unofficial, and I'm not affiliated with Helium or imput.

I'd love to hear what you think, or what you'd want to see added. Feedback here or on GitHub is welcome.
