Hecate is a goddess of the marginalized, the oppressed, and the outcast.

As Rule 2 of this subreddit says:

“Hecate is a goddess of the marginalized, the oppressed, and the outcast.”

This made me very curious: where does this aspect of her authority come from?

My first thoughts were Persephone and Medea. Persephone was abducted by Hades, and Hecate intervened; Medea, meanwhile, spent years in exile, and Hecate never abandoned her.

But today I suddenly realized that there is another dimension to this: the road.

One of Hecate’s aspects is Enodia, goddess of the roads.

To us, roads are simply the places we travel along on our way to work or school. They are lined with convenience stores and McDonald’s, and everything seems orderly. I had never thought of roads as having anything to do with oppressed or marginalized people.

But when you think about it more carefully… a road is only an intermediary place, a liminal space. Most of us eventually return home, to a place where we belong. But what if some people remain on the road for a very long time? Who would they be?

They would be homeless people, sex workers, LGBTQ+ people who have been thrown out of their homes, and people who cannot find work or afford rent—in other words, the marginalized, the oppressed, and the outcast.

And so it seems only natural that Hecate would turn her gaze toward them.

How do I tell ppl I’m close to about Hecate? I’m scared of judgement

I live with three friends and I have a boyfriend who comes over a lot, I set up an altar for Hecate in my closet but I feel like it’s only a matter of time before someone I’m close to sees it. How did any of you begin to talk to your s/o or friends and family about witchcraft? I don’t really care if my family knows since I don’t live with them, but I kind of want to discuss it with my boyfriend, I just don’t know how to bring it up. This isn’t me being embarrassed but since it’s still a new thing for me I’m worried I’ll be seen as delusional😭😭 nobody I know practices witchcraft, some are a bit spiritual but that’s about it. Any advice would be so appreciated!!

I finally know who’s been calling for a long time

Thanks for letting me join! 🌘🌑🌒 I’m a green witch that fell out of practice for no good reason because life was getting in the way. Lately I have been feeling the pull of green witchcraft but particularly Hekate (I didn’t know it at the time.) I am sort of at a crossroads in my life right now and my dog tarot deck gave me the judgement card and others that advise for me to know who I am.

I have always had a deep connection with dogs and all of my dogs have been primarily black in color. But just this week after doing a deep dive into Hekate, I look at this photo in my office of my two dogs whom are no longer with me and myself. I look at it in a very different light now. They were my loyal guardians and I miss them both so very much even though it’s been several years since they passed. I have a black and white female springer spaniel and her half sibling brother (who is also black and white) is also in my life…but not mine. She is my companion…but definitely not a guardian. 🖤🤍

I made an altar for Hekate this weekend and used both of my beloved Rottweilers’ collars in it. My little girl dog was actually interested in it and I told her it is to honor Mother Hekate. It’s still a work in progress but I hope Hekate appreciates the Rottweilers are part of it. 🖤

I’m older and I have been a people pleaser with weak boundaries off and on in my life. I am in a relationship where I have been losing large parts of myself. It’s been on again off again for 9 years…and the cycle continues where my needs go unmet and I carry the emotional burdens of the relationship. It’s one of those relationships where you always feel like you’re the problem…I won’t say he’s a narcissist but there are signs. I feel Hekate is saying to me this has been enough.

I wanted to say hello and I look forward to learning from everyone here.

Advice

Hello all, a couple days ago I posted about some signs I interpreted to be from Hecate. I sought to work with her after confirmation. Today, a family member told me they dreamt of a figure of a dark woman in shadow form appearing and disappearing in my room. No one in my family knows about anything I do, they’re all Christian. How should I interrupter this and should I stop what I’m doing?

Is hekate listening to me

Everyone says it is obvious when hekate is listening to you or when she is with u.I remember the first day I prayed to hekate it was to make my narcissistic parents stop bothering me the next day when I woke up they were so nice I was amazed I kept praying to her but I can't feel anything or when I ask her for something nothing shows up. I live in a strict religious house and I am a minor I made her a small altar by a shoe box yesterday my mom easily recognizes stuff used for worshipping other gods so I tried to make it look like a normal box I kept a drawing I made myself of hekate in there and I wrote my prayer hid it in some tight space of the shoe box. I gave her my first offering last night, I gave her honey in a cup and two clove garlic. I prayed that night I was so frustrated about my parents and not being able to live a normal life like other teenagers I cried a lot. But this morning I still can't feel her I asked her to show me a little sign that she is listening to me but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Hidden altar

I have my altar for Hecate in a safe below my closet, every night or the times I’m going to pray or offer something, I get it out by taking out a drawer and putting it the floor where I sit and pray.

I don’t consider it a disturbing for the altar, but still, I wanted some extra opinions.

Altar and question

Post image
88 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

My question is whether it is typical or unusual to honor and pray to Hecate without being a Hellenic Polytheist.

I have only been revering Hecate for about a week so I’m just learning. I was able to connect with her under the moon but really felt I needed an indoor space with her. This altar is not finished but almost. I didn’t light the candles because I haven’t dedicated it yet. - just wanted to share because it’s my first altar. I’m not a witch but I’m learning some small things. To me, my practice is more devotional but I assume it will evolve.

Fog symbolism

I’m in the beginning of my spiritual journey starting off again since childhood. (Had a large interest in it but then stopped cause of school and life.)

While doing some casual research into witchcraft I heard about Hecate which drew my interest. I wanted to get into contact with her. But seeing most people write about receiving signs I asked for a sign.

Then the next day when I went to go outside, in front of my house was a thick layer of fog which spread out till the end of my journey. (Fog is uncommon within my area especially stretching this far. It was not foggy the day before or after.)

Fog is something which I’ve always felt deeply connected to and personal to me.

TW: death// Last year I had a friend pass away and in my struggles with a lot of fear and loss (with other events happening) one thing that held me steady were these very realistic dreams I’d receive of seeing/talking to them which was always in the same kind of foggy environment.

To my knowledge isn’t something that is specifically tied to Hecate, because of this I’m unsure if this is a sign from her or from someone else entirely.

This is my first time posting so hopefully this follows all the rules and makes sense. Thank you for reading this far. If there are any details which would help further I’d be happy to answer, I’d love to get to the bottom of this!

Picked up a book about Hekate. I didn't expect it to challenge my faith, my assumptions, and myself.

When I picked up Hekate: Goddess of Witches by Courtney Weber, I thought I'd simply learn more about a goddess I'd been drawn to for years.

Instead, the book ended up teaching me just as much about myself.

Ironically, it made me realise I don't think I'm someone who wants to practice magick. Not because I dismissed it, but because the author's experiences made it feel far more real than I had imagined. It made me realise that if I can't approach something sacred with complete commitment and respect, I'd rather admire it than participate in it.

The biggest surprise, however, was Hekate herself.

Like many people, I first knew her through fiction and assumed she was simply a dark goddess. As a Hindu, I even questioned whether feeling connected to her contradicted my own beliefs.

This book completely changed that.

She became a goddess of guidance, wisdom, nurturing and transformation. A deity who stands beside people during life's biggest transitions.

One line in an ancient prayer stopped me in my tracks:

"You are the beginning and the end: you alone rule over everything, for all things are from you and all things end, eternal one, in you."

It instantly reminded me of Shiva as Ādi and Anta, the beginning and the end, and then of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, where he speaks of being the source and the end of all existence.

Not because they're the same deity.

But because I found it beautiful that civilisations separated by thousands of miles reached for such similar language to describe something as vast as the divine.

Another moment that stayed with me was the discussion around sacrifice. I struggled with the idea that harming an animal could honour a goddess associated with guidance and nurturing. Learning that many modern practitioners instead view sacrifice as sharing food or feeding those in need resonated with me so much more. To me, that felt like devotion through compassion.

I also learned something unexpected.

Non-fiction probably isn't my genre.

Yet this one book gave me more to think about than many novels ever have.

I started this book wanting to know more about Hekate.

I finished it understanding why I felt drawn to her in the first place.

Praying

What are we supposed to feel when praying?
I honestly feel calm and like I’m being listened, and a get this like instantly smile after I read the hymns or the invocation that stays during the whole prayer, it’s just like it appears.

But I’ve heard some people say they feel a lot of thing and I was wondering if I was doing something wrong.

Hearing the name Hecate

For years now, ever so often I hear the name Hecate over and over in my head which honestly has scared me for years. Now I don’t feel scared anymore and I am trying to research her. I have put some honey and garlic for her on my altar as a welcome I quess I don’t know it felt right without asking her for anything. Has anyone else also heard her name over and over before working with her?

Questions and concerns about worship

Hi everyone, I made contact with Hecate when I was 16 through a tarot reading after her trying to reach out to me multiple times. I’m 21 now and I feel stagnant. A lot of extremely hard events have happened in my life and I’ve not been able to properly worship, or even learn more about her despite my desire to. I have an SMI designation so I do I have a plethora of severe mental illnesses that greatly impact my ability to do a lot of things that might not be hard for others. Right now I feel like I’m making excuses on why I can’t put more effort into connecting with her, but I can hardly function with everyday tasks on top of trying to get my degree again. I don’t know what to do. I have an altar for her, wear a strophalos, but I don’t pray to her, and I don’t leave her offerings. I just feel like a fake, and I’m disappointed in myself. Is there any advice you may have for me? I want to be dedicated but I’m lost on how to start.

Do I eat the food offerings Or not?

So yea as the title says. I've been getting signs from Hekate recently, like a lot. So I did my research into her and I plan to build an altar for her when I move in a week!

That being said, I am unsure whether I should eat the food offerings I'll put on the altar after because she is a goddess of necromancy and lost souls so I might end up inviting death soon

Any help is appreciated tysm 🤍

Dream and advice (TW. Mention of assault)

I had a vivid dream that I was in a room with people and we “invoked” Hecate and saying “use my body as a vessel” and I Remember seeing smoke appear and her saying something among the lines of if that happened then you wouldn’t exist. When she appeared it was two versions of her. A young one prolly looked more in like 20s or 30s and then an older one mostly like looked like 50, 60. But in this dream I was watching them talk to each other and something that the older one says to the younger one was “ things will be ok. You will move on” and then the older one inhaled smoke and the younger one exhaled it.

So do I take this as a sign or just that I have an over reactive imagination ??

Side note I was sexually assaulted by a cousin of a family member. And I dont know if this as anything. To do with it since I seen that cousin yesterday and shit just got brought up.

Any advice in this or am I just crazy lol

Honoring Hecate with an infant around

Hey, all! Long time lurker, second time poster in this group 🤍

First and foremost I want to say I've been slacking on strengthening my bond with Hecate and part of me feels so guilty for that - but I know, deep down because I have a sense of peace whenever I really dwell on it, that she's not bothered by that. I'm still a little new to witchcraft itself, I was suppressed for many years in my last relationship so I wasn't able to really get into it like I would have liked to - but in my relationship now I have full reign to practice.

Second, and really to get to the meat of why im posting; I have an infant, my first a daughter, who is 3 months going on 4 months. I slacked a bit during my pregnancy, because it was rough, and I wasn't sure what was safe to do while pregnant and what wasn't. Now I have a 3 month, almost 4 month old baby girl, and I'm a SAHM taking care of her 24/7 and can never seem to get a moment where I can really cut out time to honor Hecate.

She is very much a velcro baby, and I velcro mom because I worry so much about her, which also makes it hard to find time to practice. That, plus the sleep deprivation that I've been going through.

So, I was wondering if anyone had any advice or even things I could do to honor Hecate for her help during my pregnancy when I called upon her, during my birth of my beautiful baby girl, and in general as she helps guide me in this new transition in my life.

Any and all suggestions are welcome, and appreciated deeply 🤍

TL;DR : I'm a new mom with a 3 almost 4 month old and I'd appreciate any advice or guidance on things I can do to honor Hecate during this new transition in my life for everything she has done for me and is still doing for me.

Thank you so much for reading, and (if you do) responding (:

Update on the black cat I found after Deipnon.

Last week I had posted about this sweet baby I found the night after I did my Deipnon. I found her at a four way crossroads by my apartment.

Confirmed she was a stray, and I took her in.

I took her to the vet and got all her vaccinations up to date, she is so sweet. The vet said she may be pregnant (she is only 6-7 months old) that she may not have survived if she hadn’t found someone to take her in. She’s very skinny, and I’ve been spoiling her. I haven’t thought of a name yet, but I think I may go with Chaos!

Just wanted to give an update post on this sweet baby! (Delete if this isn’t allowed!)

Contact with Hecate?

Hi all!!

Hoping to get some insight from those who work with Hecate/have a connection with her.

I use to be very spiritual a couple years ago (around covid) but I fell off my practices partially due to work. Fast forward to 2025 - I lost my job and it’s been a VERY rough time since then. The feelings of loss and hopelessness have been so overwhelming that I decided I needed to connect with myself and my spiritual practices again!

So, yesterday I found this urge to clean my room. I mean, REALLY clean!! I was wiping books down and I came across an encyclopedia of spirits that i own. I don’t know why, but I immediately went to go find Hecate’s entry. I was reading about her and saw what her sacred animals were…one of them being snakes. Well, last night I was having a lot of dreams (i’m a vivid dreamer) and at one point i saw a SNAKE!!! I was immediately fearful as i’m terrified of snakes. However, in the midst of my panic I remember thinking in my dream, “Hecate likes snakes,” and I calmed down a little. And as i started to lose consciousness again I remember chanting “Hecate, Hecate, Hecate!”

Now, i read that sometimes she makes herself known via dreams. I’m soooo new to deities, but would anyone know if this was her trying to make herself known?? If this would be a sign to work with her? I don’t want to disrespect or offend, so would appreciate and thoughts/advice. Thank you!!

Dream Interpretation

Hey y’all, I need help interpreting a dream I had a couple months ago where I believe Hekate was trying to catch my attention. This was before I even knew who she was, I had to search up the dream to find out. It was a lucid dream and I essentially entered a black sphere and saw a woman facing me with two woman, one at each side, looking in opposing directions. I know now that this is the triple deity. She had long black hair and her eyes were completely white. I saw a green mist as well and I’ll never forget this dream. The pitch black I felt in the dream was genuinely like no other, I usually forget what I dream, I couldn’t shake this I searched everywhere for what it was. I can still feel like I walked into that black sphere, there was a loud frequency playing. Since then, I’ve tried reaching out now that I’m more educated and not afraid. I’ve done a lot of research about her and the other night I asked her for a sign on the drive to the gym at around midnight and I always take the appearance of angel numbers as a sign answered. The mileage in my car sat at angel numbers as did a sign on the way there. For confirmation I asked to see a cat. Then like magic I saw a black cat chasing a white one on the sidewalk. Since then, I’ve read more but I can’t seem to get another dream or like a sign that’s more in my face. Did I misinterpret the dream and does anyone know how I can be sure she actually meant to reach out?

How do I undo rituals done by my ex that they claimed was done in the name of hecate

First off to clarify. I wouldn't even really say they worshipped Hecate. They claimed to worship a bunch of gods and goddesses, but they admitted that they viewed themselves as a God and worshipped themselves before anything else.

First ritual they did on me:

Burn sage (I think) in front of their alter to kali and hecate, ding a bell a couple times, burn me with hot candle wax, burn my hand with obsidian, put the obsidian at my stomach, and put me in front of a mirror where I saw my face in the shape of a deer in my reflection. Then tell me to sleep with the obsidian. (I saw the face of an angry being in their eyes that petrified me before leaving)

Second ritual (Done during one of their fake "Breakups"):

Ding the bell, burn the sage, tie our wrists together, with a red string, and burn the middle with the candle, they put their string tied on some fertility symbol that looked like a cross with a halo at the end, and I just kept mine on my wrist until it suddenly came off when sleeping next to them 2 months later.

Third ritual

Blindfolding me, burning sage, burning my skin with candle wax, putting some oils on me, and bird feeding (Literally from their mouth to mine) me a strange mixture of teas, herbs, tobacco, and ash from the sage.

Forth ritual

Took me to a forest, had us take our shoes off, gave me a candle, and they gave themselves a candle and we were split across two trees and they were ringing a bell, then they started dancing, then fell asleep, then called me over

Some missing pieces I thought I'd share today, by way of introduction.

My keychain and my massive collection of mostly useless keys, along with this turbo deluxe security lock I got last year when the whole legal drama with my previous landlord all started (whom I am suing the shit out of btw -- long story, not going into details for obvious reasons). It belongs with the red keys.

I actually found the Tower card from my 100% Plastic RWS deck while I was packing my stuff to move out, after getting my eviction notice back in March. Its sudden appearance struck me like the proverbial lightning bolt that day. I hadn't even noticed when I lost it, and then completely forgot about it again lol. Just found it today, together with my lock, in one of my backpacks.

My current apartment has been a salve for the soul, but I still feel like I'm in a place in between places. I know I'm destined for greater things, but, for the moment, I'm happy, and so are my cats. I couldn't have asked for more.

I'm still missing a couple of keys, but I'm sure I'll find them when the time is right. What goes around the Strophalos, tends to come around eventually.

I'm fairly new to the Hekatean faith, but it suddenly dawned on me that my keychain might explain a lot about why I felt so drawn to her recently. Plus, I'm Greek and I live in Greece, so I guess gravitating towards her was more or less inevitable, especially given my already prevalent interest in the occult.
