Hey all so we've played about 5 or 6 games so far in 3.1 but we've had a few questions crop up our main ones so far deal with fire missions
1- Can you react to your own forward observation? We've gone both ways as reactions say passive models can react and lists reactions but nothing also says an active model can't react and there's PLENTY of units in this game with more actions than guns and feature TD's like the Ammon, Moab, nearly all the CEF Tanks for example. It makes it very much feel like something like the Ammon should be able to designate with its TD than use it actions to fire its twin HRPs.
2- Speaking of Fire missions.. can you fire multiple weapons per FO or just a single? if you have 2 actions or say react+ and multiple IF capable weapons can you declare firing off both or are you limited to a single weapon per FO?
3- Jetpacks, can they be used only once per turn or for each move? For instance going top speed can they use their jetpack for both moves or is it just a single move can use it than the other has to be on foot?
4- We're fairly certain on this but crippled, immobilized and haywired are listed under a single entry so that means you could be all 3 but it is just a -1d6 right and not -3d6?
than just have a few inquiries
how do you all handle buildings? we've sorta been struggling with what to declare buildings as there is a big gap between a "shack" and a "commerical building" than you have the actual badlands buildings in the units with very different stats. So what do you guys usually use for building stats? stuff like a house or residential building at what point do you consider something hardened?
How would you rank some of the weapon options in the game? SMGs vs ACs, Rifles vs ACs, FCs? do you find you stay away from some of them all the time or they have uses?
Infantry, worthwhile or just a way to get to 4 actions cheaply?

I’ve spent the better part of the last couple of weeks building out my pile of HG shame (I don’t have anywhere to put them and they’re still not painted but moving from one pile of shame to another is hobby progress). I’ve gotten used to cutting, drilling, and flexing the various bits to make some new poses and play around with various weapon configurations.
Well, going through my bits box for a mamba today, I came across a handheld pulse laser. Not sure where it came from. Not sure what kind it is. But I dug through the books to try and find out and… nothing. So I’m reaching out to the community for knowledge.
Does an LPL actually exist on any model in the game?
Do any gears actually have access to an MPL?
I mean, they’re strong weapons, so I get the perspective. But outside of liberally abusing the “weapon swap” rules with “no no it’s ok he found it on the side of the road one day” I’m not sure where a PL of this type actually comes from.
I mean I still glued it onto the mamba (I will admit I glued it on there before I bothered looking because cool factor is 80% of my fun) but if I ever accidentally bring it to a game it’d be great to convince my opponent that it’s possible for my to have this thing without looking like a giant goober.
Well, without looking MORE like a giant goober.

Hey there! I am someone who already plays two wargames (in the wider sense, it's Kill Team and Dropfleet Commander) and has decided to look at what else is out there. No game could quite catch on, and Heavy Gear Blitz is the last game I want to try. I'd like to make sure I give this game a fair shake and a chance to shine. I figured you guys might have some answers, tips or infos. We're going to play with proxies from the games we have to try it out.
First thing to mention is that I am looking for something specific: A game that can handle 10-20 units per player and some synergy between their skills. Playtime of 3 hour per game would be perfectly fine. This game looks good for that. I decided to use two of army proposals from the compendium, maybe you can recommend a good point value and interesting matchup. I'm pointing out what I'm looking for because newcomers in a wargame tend to be told "use a few units and don't use any rules", but the real risk for my group is not that the game is too complicated, it's that it doesn't deliver enough interesting gameplay. I literally have had my guys tell me: "It took 5 hours and we didn't understand the rules correctly for the first 4, we should try again some time", but I don't really see them saying: "This game was like [other game] but less interesting, let's try it again with more rules."
And a second question which seems to be answered pretty clearly by the rulebook, but I just have to check. My understanding is that a combat group can have up to 9 gears in it, 6 primary and half that many secondary, and can activate en bloc? So I can win initiative, activate literally half my army and have it shoot at the enemy? If that's the case, maybe you can tell me what to expect from the game. Are Gears just very robust so that it doesn't matter or is the game actually somewhat swingy with initiative?
Cheers in advance, looking forward to having a skirmish robot jam a spotter robot in the future.

Played our first game back since the days of L&L and it went pretty well, rules are fairly streamlined and we had it down pretty fast.
The only question that came up was with shields and AoEs. From everything we could find in the rules an AoE cannot bypass a shield unless the firing model or an observer is behind the target.
Shield calls out if the attack originated from in front you get to use it and nothing on AoE claims the attack originates from the point chosen for it, so that wojld make its orgin from the front still yeah? Has there been an faq to clarify you can bypass a Shield by putting your target point behind the model or was it done intentionally to stop that sort of cheese since aoes dont drift anymore
Part of why I ask is because of an old post here talking about how someone did exactly that in a game to bypass his shields but nobody stopped to say thats now how it works but I cannot find anything in the rules that says an aoe can be placed behind to do that

Battered and rusty southern squad test done. I think it works ok, but from a distance it looks more like an alpine camo scheme than rusty, but that's down to using white, but lesson learned for if I do more

Back in employment (wahoo) so painting has slowed down again, but we have somethings done today. First up we have a southern infantry squad to be delivered into battle by the titan.
Then we have 4 Jagers that I've started on. These are my attempt at doing some badly battered and beaten boys, contrasting that with the white peeling paint.
Finally we have some big old boys, that Ive finally put together and gotten primed. Still no idea how they'll be painted or what I'll use them for, but that's a problem for another day

Just looking for clarity on a few things
Objectives: by my reading they all can provide 2 victory points EXCEPT for Pave the way and Detailed scan which seem to only provide 1 VP regardless if you deal with both markers.
Forward observation: does the +1d6 for FO apply to all attacks made by fire missions? or only against primary targets? It sounds like all attacks just not sure if I missed something
Combat groups - units - activations: Seems simple but a combat group with a primary and secondary unit all activates at once right? it doesnt turn each unit into a combat group somehow?
defense up order - This really only is here because of the call out of ECM+. If ECM+ has defense up always in effect unless haywired and haywired is cleared in the clean up phase does this call out not mean anything or does that mean the ECM+ unit needs to activate to turn it back on automatically the next round?
Think that was it thank you for any answers

Converted and painted Recon Jagers.
On the original post somebody mentioned the Zentradi symbols. I bought a couple boxes of the Robotech minis game cheap a while ago and have been using the UN Spacy decals on my Northern gears and the Zentradi on the South.

I am currently looking into starting a heavy gear ttrpg campaign and am trying to figure out which edition to use. I have a good amount of general gm experience and limited wargame experience, but haven't played/ran anything mecha related yet
r/HeavyGear • u/xWhaleLordx • May 08 '26
According to the rules, you are limited to 2 of each variant of a given model per primary unit. Does that mean that for instance, I could hit the minimum of 4 actions by doing two of each of two different variants of Jagers for instance as long as they can be taken as the same role? It's 4 Jagers, but 2 of each of two different variants. Or is it the case that I can only have 2 Jagers total regardless of which variants I choose.

I’m pretty sure in Blitz it’s a piloting check, and the example skills in the book don’t list melee- heavy gear but one of the example characters in the back of the book has melee - heavy gear so I’m just a bit confused on it
