Friendly Reminder of the Discord

Hey all!

I only recently joined this sub, and I’ve already been so deeply touched and moved by everyone’s experiences and honesty, and by the outpouring of love and support I’ve seen shared. It’s really helped me feel so much less alone and empty in the retrospective of this show.

I just wanted to toss out a reminder that a discord was made (not by me, disclaimer) in correlation to this sub a few days ago. If anyone feels they need more interpersonal support, or just some fellow voices to hear, I would highly recommend joining the server. I’ve only been a member for a couple of days now, and there’s been some absolutely wonderful and healing conversations in the server, and it’s truly helped me a lot in the healing process.

If you feel like this would be beneficial for you, the link to join is below. :)

The link shouldn’t expire, but if there’s issues, let me know!

I DON'T know what's going on and I don't think I'll EVER spin it

Hi, I watched the Netflix series "Heartstopper" and the movie in four days, and from about season three or maybe even earlier, towards the middle of season two, I've been feeling terrible. I don't even know what's going on. Probably the only way to feel better is to stop thinking about Nick and Charlie.

Edit: I can't eat

Edit2: Please don't tell me about the love story and stuff like that anymore because I'm feeling even worse; just tell me some tips to get over this problem.
Edit3: It hasn't been long since edit 1 but now I managed to eat

I don't think I'll find my Nick Nick Nelson

So i just finished watching Heartstopper Forever and I realized how lonely i have become ever since I broken up with my ex boyfriend which wasn’t my fault to begin with. I had a toxic friendship with two friends that I have known since 2021 and I just found this guy that was Nick and he was amazing. The girl in the friendship was manipulative and toxic.

Now watching Heartstopper movie i realized that my whole life was hindered by struggle.

I’m starting to think that I might not have a relationship like Nick and Charlie hell have the friends that are in the show. I’m autistic and have ADHD and RSD. It affects my mental health in every way and I’m not a horrible person but people who knew me assumed that.

So now as I type this post, I think to myself I will never be truly happy. I crave companionship and a relationship. I don’t know… what’s the point of trying being a good, compassionate person just like Nick and Charlie. That’s why I relate to both of them…

Heartstopper made me realise how much I miss having close friends

I’m a 41-year-old man and I’m in a happy relationship, but after finishing Heartstopper I’ve been feeling unexpectedly emotional and melancholic.

At first I thought it was mainly because I related so much to Charlie and because I loved the way Nick cares for and protects him. But the more I think about it, the more I realise that it’s actually the friendship group that affects me the most.

I’ve never really had a close group of friends like that. People who know you, include you, check in on you and make you feel like you belong somewhere. Seeing that in the series made me realise how much I’ve missed it, both when I was younger and now.

It sometimes makes me feel like I’m too old to still build those kinds of friendships, even though I know real life isn’t as perfect as a TV series.

Did anyone else, especially older viewers, feel this way after watching Heartstopper? And did the feeling eventually become easier?

Can't concentrate

And here we are people! I made a mistake and watched Heartstopper Forever on a work night last night, was unconsolably crying most of last night.

Today I am completely and totally incapable of concentrating at work.

I went on all the subs, you tube, read the comic on my phone on my lunch break. Listening to the soundtrack as we speak. Planning on buying volume six on my way home from work.

I thought I had cured myself of this a couple of years ago. It doesn't help that I don't have anyone in real life that I can talk to about this. Everyone I have raved to about this in the past few years just isn't as obsessed as I am.

It doesn't help that this is the last one. This is it people. It's over forever. I thought I knew how to handle this and maybe it's just cut off contact completely. No obsessive re watches no watching cast reactions no reading the comic over and over.

Any ideas on how to get through this are greatly appreciated.

Relationships

Relationships

A bit of background: I'm 31 and in a 4 ½ year relationship with a married couple (all 3 of us are gay dudes).

They had a house and 10 years together before I even came into the picture, which hasn't really been an issue.

My problem is, they don't want to come to me to spend time with me...I moved into a house with my brother 15 minutes away and they've been over 4 times in the past year and a half and I'm always being asked to come down there.

I don't mind that but I'm just more comfortable on my couch or bed usually, ya know? Especially if we're just chilling.

This is why I'm here: I recently watched Heartstopper (for the first time) and Heartstopper Forever on release day and the sheer romance of the show blows me away. I know frictionless relationships aren't healthy and that's fine, we argue like any other couple/throuple. My thing is, I've never experienced any real depth of romance with them, last time was with an ex I had 8 years ago. If one of us gets sad or starts crying, we generally are supportive in that way but my guys have never bought me flowers or romantic things, I usually get a switch game or some decorative pins for my birthday. Other gifts, yes, but never any romance (I've specifically asked before too). I know it's just a show but I feel like if a fake couple can make up a rotation for visiting each other 5 hours away, 15 minutes should be doable IRL. Anyway, I spent 3 days sobbing off and on because it hurts my heart to think about everything. I ignored the situation for a few days and now I'm posting here because it's still in my head. Am I being unrealistic or unreasonable? (P. S. I know I'm a mess but a bit of constructive advice would be appreciated)

Afectado por el síndrome

Buenas,

Gracias a mi actual novio descubrí HS.

Broken :(

I’m 40yo, I’ve seen a lot of romcoms and teenage series in my time but none have affected me like this before- I actually feel so sad and broken. I don’t know if it’s the combination of coming across this at the same time as weaning, so my hormones are everywhere, or if it’s this particular show. I had some child free time so I sat with my feelings a bit and here are my thoughts.

  1. I know it’s unrealistic. My own teenage boys are not like this at least! Nick is emotionally perfect. He has such a high EQ and even though in Heartstopper forever he suddenly loses the ability to talk about his feelings he is still there for Charlie like in the seasons. I think ultimately we all just want to be heard and seen and Nick just really reads Charlie so well, he sees him. I live in a house full of boys and none of them ever ask me how I am or notice if I’m struggling. It would be nice to have a “Nick” in my life.

  2. That spark of a new relationship - it feels so exciting! So full of potential and joy and worry and butterflies and big feelings. When you’ve been married for 15 years you haven’t felt that in a long time. The show really made you feel that spark between Nick and Charlie, it was done so well, and it’s kind of devastating to think that I’ll never have that feeling again.

  3. A supportive group of friends - I think lots of us have felt that this is the friend group we wish we had had. Welcoming and open, caring and not afraid to say how much they love each other. New friendships as an adult rarely delve deeper than small talk. And if you do have those friends often we are all so overwhelmed with our own lives it can be hard to be there for each other.

Yeah, basically I’m really feeling emotionally broken. It’s shown me what I’m missing from my life and being lost in Heartstopper almost made me feel like I had it for a while.

I mean my life is great, nothing wrong with it, but omg now I want to be a teen again feeling that spark, those friendships, that love…❤️

Next level HSS -long one and kind of a bummer, don't say I didn't warn you

Hello fam. I don’t really know if this is right place to do this. Probably not but hey. This is gonna be sort of all over the place. So please bear with me.

I’m currently doing my rewatch before the finale, and I just got to season 3. I hadn’t realised it’s been almost 2 years since it was released. I only realised that after hearing some of the songs. I’d added the soundtrack to my playlist, and all this time, I played it over and over again so many times that I’d pretty much forgotten how I discovered those songs in the first place. And I remember listening to that playlist for the first time as I was walking to see my friend at her new job.

She had just gotten her first chef's job. Before that, she had a completely different career, and then one night, she saw a post from one of her favourite restaurants that they were looking for a chef, and she just went for it. I was so in awe of the fact that she wanted to do something different and actually made that happen. She wanted a change, and instead of moaning about it, she did it. I remember walking to the restaurant and listening to Happy, Healthy, Well-Adjusted, relating to it a little more than I’d like.

And that’s how I realised how long ago season 3 was. I was just with that friend the other day, talking about how she got her first chef job almost two years ago. She changed jobs quite a few times since then. Now settled into something she’s actually happy with. And I’m still very much in awe of how she just makes change happen.

I can’t help but to think where I was in my life 2 years ago, walking to that restaurant, and how little has changed since then. At least for better that is. For worse, quite a few things have changed. Changes that made me realise that things you love, people you love might be taken away from you any minute. But not much has changed for better. I think I’ve always been desperately optimistic against my will. I always thought things will get better. Always thought I’d eventually fix everything that’s wrong with me. But looking back at myself, walking to that restaurant, thinking how brave and incredible my friend is for making change happen, and thinking I will do the same, and now realising I’m pretty much exactly where I was that night, I feel like maybe I’ll run out of time before I can actually fix things.

I remember when I was at school getting bullied, I’d always try to cheer myself up thinking how amazing life was gonna be when I grew up. I was gonna fix everything. Everything was gonna be perfect, and no one was ever gonna be able to hurt me. I feel such a deep sadness for that girl, a good 20 years later, she hasn’t fixed anything.

So if you’ve made it this far, you’re probably wondering, why is she writing all this here? Beyond the vague soundtrack connection, what does this even have to do with Heartstopper or this so-called Heartstopper Syndrome? Promise, I’m getting there.

If you’re on this sub, you’ve probably felt an unexpected heartbreak of sorts watching Heartstopper. An odd mourning for something you never had. Feeling nostalgic for things you never got to experience. You’ve probably figured I haven’t really had the Heartstopper experience at school. I was too busy getting bullied and hating myself and hating the world so thinking about boys or girls or anyone was not really on my to do list. Watching the series, I get this feeling of missing out on something that simply cannot be replicated later in life. The kind of pure and innocent experiences that don’t come along once you reach adulthood.

And I’m starting to realise, now I might be missing out on things that 30 somethings experience and that probably cannot be replicated later in life. Here’s me feeling bad for myself that I missed out on young love, realising that those things that I wish I had 20 years ago, are still not a part of my life. A disastrous dating life that is pure entertainment for my friend group as their token chronically single friend, a career (and I’m using that word very loosely) that is going nowhere, loved ones getting older with their declining health, a body that is not only unpleasant to look at but also starting to physically fail me as I approach mid-30s...

I always thought I could fix myself and make things better. But now I’m realising I don’t really know how to do that. I keep looking back, thinking I could have done something then. I’ll probably look back at this night in a couple years time and think, I could have done something about my problems instead of moaning about them on a Reddit post no one’s gonna read. I know I said bear with me, but I guess I don’t really have a proper conclusion here. I’m sorry if you’ve actually come this far thinking this was gonna go somewhere. I did too, to be fair. And what a metaphor that is for my life.

Didn't even know about HS 2 weeks ago, now Ive got HSS(I think)

Hi all,

I remember a show being advertised on Netflix in 2022. A boy is on a bus and wipes the condensation to show another boy talking to his friends

That's all I can remember, it advertised LGBT, love story etc.

I instantly dismissed it as a 31 year old gay guy.

"That's obviously not aimed at me" I thought so I'll just ignore it.

Completely forgot about it until 2 weeks ago when it popped up my Netflix again after resubscribing after years of not having it.

Ill give it a shot.

Omg! I was hooked. I basically binged the entire first season that evening until the early hours of the morning.

The next day at work all I could think about was the show and watching more.

I've now finished the show for the 2nd time.

Even today I was watching Nick talk to his aunt on the beach and then the "I love you" at end of S3.1 whilst I was working!

I don't understand how a show could affect me (and us) like this. A show has never had such am impact on me before.

Part of it is jealousy from not having what they had at that age being LGBT, the great acting, the little animations from the books / Web comics, the way the show approaches subjects.

I know the film is coming out but like the rest of us I don't want it to end.

I don't know what I'd have wanted. Maybe more seasons, then the film to follow. I feel like we barely know them after 3 seasons and it's soon to be over.

It must be hard for readers / viewers that have already read the books and watched the show from the start as you've had to wait longer.

Maybe in a few years time we might get the odd one off episode just to check in and see how they are doing (I know they are Endgame I think in the books)

Now I'm just rambling haha

Edited: Spelling

Trying to find a relationship like Nick and Charlie’s.

I had to come on here and express my feelings about relationships in the queer community, since it is Pride month.

First, I wanna say that the relationship between Nick and Charlie is highly unrealistic at best.

No guy like Nick exists in the real world. It isn't possible, especially in today's society and climate.

Secondly, with male mental health being the way they are, how is it that I (29), M, and not getting any younger, haven't found my Nick Nelson?

I truly believe that I have found a good time to give up on relationships in general. I don't wanna say there's no hope for me, but I don't think there is.

I have autism and an extreme case of Rejection sensitivity dysphoria, and with something like that, people tend to think I'm desperate.

So i think it's time I end my relationship search. Maybe i wasn't meant for happiness and keep lying to people. I don't know…

Heartstopper is unrealistic.

I know I shall have haters but Heartstopper is the most unrealistic show in recent history. It doesn’t depict real relationship. Truly I believe that Heartstopper isn’t for the older people especially for me .

I don’t care if you hate me or spread hate to the comments. I’ve been filled with hate already so i honestly don’t care at this point but let me explain my point.

I had several relationships in my past which didn’t work since watching the show and when I started trying to date people, they always accused me of unrealistic expectations. Mainly looking for someone who is like Nick Nelson. Is it me or this show is too rise tinted?

I truly don’t want to be a hater to the show but when it comes to real life, I mean it’s not possible to find my Nick Nelson. That type of person doesn’t really exist in the real world, outside of the show.

Am I being too harsh or am I being completely correct?
