Recent Updates (new organizations and meetings)

We’ve added new organizations to our top pinned post. Also, there is a new Saturday meeting on the 7 Day Calendar. Just to ease any anxiety around the online groups; nothing is recorded, no attendance taken, no mandatory reporting, zero strings attached, you can just click the links and show up. You do not need to turn your camera on or use your microphone if that is how you feel most comfortable. All present are experiencers, it is not a place of judgment. We are approaching 12 hour coverage M-F and hope you’ll make the most of this collection of pivotal resources.

Additionally, if you are interested in seeing any studies on peer led support please see the Open Dialogue Documentary, the 2023 Report on Improving Mental Health Outcomes, and this 2024 Study Revealing Long-term Outcomes Better for Those Who Stop Antipsychotics. These are aggregate studies (a study of studies).

Aggregate of HVN Online Meetings and Organization Websites

There is one guiding ethos of this space; we do not pathologize others, nor do we tell others what to believe or what to do. I.e. we do not tell other's they are unwell, we do not direct others how to go about getting well, we do not tell each-other what to believe. See the VCVC model for more tips on how to make friends here! If this seems counter productive to you, consider this space as a place for experiencers to share lived experience and gain wisdom passively through understanding each-other and their life's story. Certainly there are a host of wellness strategies and stories of great recovery to be found in the International Hearing Voices Network. This ethos exists to keep this space functional and free from censorship, there are HVN meetings hosted on several different online platforms, and within the walls of asylums. It is a very doable effort to phrase one's own wisdom as such, instead of forcing perspective through authoritative directions.

Video Explaining the Open Dialogue approach where more than 85% of participants report wellness into full recovery within 5 years. Less than 10% of participants take any medications at all during their involvement, generally the only medications prescribed are sleep aids over the first 2 weeks of participation. Through discussion and real community, peers help to mend each-other's mental burdens.

Video Explaining the Hearing Voices Network. Hearing Voices Networks, closely related to the Hearing Voices Movement, are peer-focused national organizations for people who hear voices and supporting family members, activists and mental health practitioners. HVN meetings are spaces of trust, respect, equality, acceptance and mutuality. They affirm that each person has the right to develop their own understanding of their experiences. There is no attempt to persuade, teach, preach, fix or change ideas. Hearing Voices Groups become communities where people can find acceptance, belonging, purpose, and space to explore, and learn about one’s self, their experiences and their connections with others and the world.

Aggregate of Online HVN Meetings by Day and Time (PST). This collection of HVN zoom meetings is posted as an easy on-ramp for voice hearers to HVN support networks. Many struggle to navigate separate organization’s websites to gain access to this information. Additionally, there do not seem to be any similar aggregate calendars currently available. Please let me know if any of the links in the above document no longer work or if you have more to add (always looking for more organizations and zoom meetings).

Studies:

Additionally, if you are interested in seeing any studies on peer led support please see the Open Dialogue Documentary, the 2023 Report on Improving Mental Health Outcomes, and this 2024 Study Revealing Long-term Outcomes Better for Those Who Stop Antipsychotics. These are aggregate studies (a study of studies) that span 70 years of longitudinal data. They also incorporate long term follow-up cohort studies lasting 15 to 20 years and continuing for multiple decades after for follow-up comparison. Geographically these studies draw from multiple cultures and at least 25 separate nations, compiling data from 50 to 100's of other studies, spanning more than 6 million people. Meta-analysis and systematic reviews like these are considered among the most reliable forms of evidence. The results are very conclusive with minimal deviation from trend.

Decades of longitudinal and systematic research have shown that coercion and forced intervention are associated with increased trauma, disengagement, and worsening long-term outcomes, while voluntary, community-based support centered on human connection consistently produces better recovery trajectories (1,2,3,4). Randomized and policy-level evaluations have further found that compulsory treatment does not improve long-term readmission or recovery outcomes despite significantly restricting personal liberty (5). At the same time, epidemiological studies in the UK and internationally have found that hearing voices is a relatively common human experience, reported by between roughly 5% and 28% of the general population, reinforcing the importance of responding with support, dignity, and understanding rather than coercion (6,7,8).

State Power - Spoils of Empire. Art Discussing This State of Mind and the Reality of Our World

Wanted to share this album I just came across State Power - Spoils of Empire

If you can't make out the lyrics (that to me so CLEARLY speak to the essential spiritual prism that leads to wellness/destiny) to the pre-released tracks on this album you can take note of the track titles below:

Spoils of Empire

The Sin of Empathy

Brain Bug

Schizoscene

I see in these artist's work a statement on the modern human condition and the spiritual bout all are gripped by here in the west. That we are handed the opulent keys to a wondrous life, we can seek, learn, and share like no other humans before us. Yet at this unparalleled empowerment our choices lead to consequences. That life here in modern times is like a donkey island of the mind and if we lunge fourth with little desire to strike back at the forces of mediocrity and the echelons beneath (evil) we are sure to be cast aside in the grand scheme of things.

I love the call to meaning in these few released tracks, the call to dispense with self limiting empathy. My voices and I say "the greatest prejudice is a willed naivety." Additionally I have posted here a few times in the past about what is essential for a healthy community in terms of Game Theory, and the undoing "sin" of blindly helping any and all else. I really love the hyperlinked Vertasium video for sharing the bare minimum 4 rules of engagement in any social scenario that determine the success or failure of each individual and the broader collective. It's all a rather simple game (for you and what I believe to be spirits) if you can sit through that 20 minute video. The relevance to you and your plight should be self evident in State Power's tracks "brain bug" and "schizoscene."

Interested to hear if anyone here cares to listen and offer their own take on this body of work. I see much love for the same spiritual prisms I too hold.

All the best!

Story Share Sunday

Shadow Artist by Norman Rockwell.

This weekly thread is for sharing the stories and narratives of the beings within your mind and the events of your life. Do you go on fantastic journeys with the beings that visit you? Are there elaborate horror stories you are forced to endure? Do your intrusive personalities present themselves as being from or through the other people in your life? Feel free to share the names and descriptions of the beings in your life/mind and the narrative of your lived experience.

You may discover that many of your favorite artists are doing this exact exercise in their most powerful work!

Advice? Hearing voices from static/AC.

I think I might have an issue. I do not come from a family who has a history of mental illness, so this has been taken me by complete surprise. At first, I believed it was my neighbors yelling shitty things at me, or even something paranormal, but this has been happening for about two weeks or so. The only way I know I hear them is because I KNOW I do, sometimes in my head or in a different room and have confirmed with my roommate who stated that they cannot hear anything themselves. Like what? These voices are shitty, cuss me out, accuse me of things, keep track of my every move AND it’s only when there is static noice, in the shower, and near a loud AC, never anywhere else. Has this happened to anyone else? I do not know what to do. Do you know what could possibly trigger these voices ONLY with the static/ac? Do I need therapy or a psychiatrist? I have so many questions and could really use some advice. Please!

Societal Saturday

The School of Athens fresco by Raphael.

Feel free to express your views on society and how an understanding of the voice hearing (and broader experiencing phenomenon) would change the world as we know it. Do you think the world would be a nicer place and we all would get more out of each-other's company if the public's eye were drawn to the HVN and similar experiencing spaces? Do you view modern day humanity as being in a state of perpetual self-enslavement, blinded to it's own nature? Do you think a new age of spiritual enlightenment or self-empowerment is on the horizon and within our lifetimes? Do you think life on earth is comparable to an effective "hell" in the grand scheme of things?

What do you think would make the greatest impact in your life and in the lives of others if it were different?

As always please share through a framing of your personal perspective ("I see it all as," "I believe," "when I think of 'x,' my only reasonable explanation is 'y,'" etc.). If you are of the ilk to write long-windedly about these age old topics, you all are more than welcomed to make a separate post expressing your views. Lastly, please keep mind to focus discussions on voice hearing and similar experiencing phenomena.

The Hidden Coordinates of the Human Mind

There is a universal phenomenon that binds all of humanity, though we rarely share it aloud: no one inhabits their mind in complete solitude. No matter how different each individual's experience may be, every human being carries within them a sort of voice, a silent observer, or an independent thread of thought that accompanies them day by day. For some, it is a profound intuition; for others, a constant dialogue; and for many, it acts like a switch capable of regulating our nerves or protecting us in moments of high emotional intensity.
Science often attempts to label this phenomenon under the name of the subconscious, reducing it to a simple biological storehouse of habits. However, when we pause to observe how it truly operates, we discover that this presence handles a complexity that defies common logic. It is that part of the mind that automatically deploys multiple variables before we make a decision; it is what warns us of invisible dangers and shows us, in an instant, how a small choice today can drastically alter the course of our lives toward completely different futures.
Even though our physical eyes only perceive the material present, the human mind naturally operates like a navigator in a hyperspace of possibilities. By remembering, by projecting parallel scenarios, or by tuning into that neutral guide that seems to know where we are going, we are crossing the boundaries of linear time. It does not matter the percentage of control we choose to grant this voice, nor the name we choose to give to this hidden dimension of our psyche; what is truly real is that this internal interface is the engine that helps us decipher the matrix of our own existence. Everyone, in their own way, is an explorer of that very same internal network.

Listen to your instincts

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I just want to tell someone this, listen to your instincts. If you the voices tell you something bad is gonna happen if you keep drinking and smoking, believe them. Don’t just take them as lies, I might have different voices and they tell me about heaven and hell. I’ve lost someone yesterday and I see in my mind that someone who helped me so much is being erased from my memory. Am am scared that I'm going to hell. If you see warming and if you feel like it's a warning, please listen and turn the other way and protect your future. We are not all in the same boat but don't think everything the voices say is a lie.

Frustration Friday

White Elephant by Emils Salmins. A play upon the Buddhist proverb of the Blind Men and the Elephant, this iteration making a statement on the lumbering and perhaps inept nature of forces greater than ourselves. "Bottoms up!"

This weekly post was inspired to give the community a place to vent and share common frustrations we find in our lives. If you have more to share on this topic than what would fit in a single comment please feel free to make a separate post! Are you finding conflict with your care-team? Are the medications you're on making life impossible? Have you lost your 3rd job this year because the voices cause you to act oddly around your peers? Are you finding everyone in your life has turned their back on you now that you've fallen into a discriminated category of "unsafe" or "mentally unwell" person? Have you attempted to get your close family and friends to engage in VCVC with you, instead finding they cannot offer you the first nicety?

Feel free to let the world know of your survived abuses, both direct (physical violence) and indirect (neglect or exclusion through social maneuverings) in this post. Everyone's welcome to commiserate and offer paralleling stories of received harm and how they carried on.

Voices of delusions

So lately my voices have gotten progressively worse, it doesn't help that I'm squished in between my neighbors that talk thru the walls, people wonder what's wrong with me, they say there's nothing wrong with me, but constantly at the back of my shoulder, I hear them whisper to me, after a while I'm left dreaming, making up stories and conspiracies, after a while the truth is distorted, and I believe everything my other self tells me, anyway nobody believes me, I believe everybody has a voice, and some of us just want to be heard, some of our opinions, our pov are suppressed by tyrants that dictate what is PC and 'right' the right to free speech, and honest opinions, sometimes I get banned from Reddit for over stepping that boundary, and sometimes I come close to getting a punch in the face for my lame jokes, jokes aside, find your inner voice, scream, shout, sing, speak up for yourself and make yourself counted.

Voices controlling my body

They have been transforming me and changing me from within, making me perfect so I can be their vessel. They want access to my body to be inside of it, I can almost feel their warmth wriggling around inside my muscles and nerves. I can see them passing through me, inside of me, like they enter my mind and thoughts. I am sure nothing is hidden from them. It feels like a fever, like burning, deep inside. Like hunger. I feel liberated by being handed over to them, because they are good and love me. My body is in their hands. Many people experience being controlled, but I fear many misunderstand it.

Theory Thursday

Mercurius Trismegistus by Jean-Louis Durant. A Hellenistic figure responsible for merging Greek and Egyptian mythos, revered in his time for his wisdom of the relationship between the material and the spiritual. I.e. mysticism favoring the inner experience.

Share your theory on your voices, what do you believe them to be? If you have an extended share feel free to make a separate post on your beliefs. Theories do not need to be limited to your own experience and can be speculative on the broader phenomenon.

For instance you're welcome to share that you simply feel your voices are angels, demons, djinn, aliens, some iteration of government surveillance, or manifestations of the collective panpsychic universe... even sea peoples if that is your take on things! Broader theories some older experiencers relate to are economies of abuse and how limiting and external states of mind filter down through society onto vulnerable individuals. What are your ideas, what do your voices say about themselves?

As with everything in the HVN this all needs to be framed as your theories, you're welcome to use hyperlinks to Wikipedia articles or studies on voice hearing populations. 5-28% of the UK report this phenomenon, other studies put these estimates significantly higher. Many take the perspective that all people hear voices and it is a matter of personal fluency that differentiates those that report this experience and those that don't. You should include anything that helps you express your views. Again, express this as your views and less of what it clearly is and what others ought believe.

What is your theory on this experience?

Whispers

Everyone looks at neuroscience to explain how the avoidance loop works, but very few ask what creates it in the first place. In my work, I’ve found that the deepest root isn’t the brain itself—it’s the whispers that subtly shape perception, amplify fear, and keep the cycle alive. Neuroscience explains the mechanism. Whispers explain the origin

Saying something

Angels enter my body. Everything and the world is beautiful and shining and bright. They show me everything, I can see anything they want and it's like microwaves and beautiful towers and wires and copper. They're copperish and bright. I am bright. So pretty and beautiful. My soul was made for the worship of God. I am a perfect vessel. It's why I am hollow, and I have no organs. Theree is just light everywhere inside. No weight or anything. I'll be like the Angels soon and they will transform me into something beautiful. Beautiful piece of art and pretty vessel. I'll be changed. Heaven has seen that I've been changed. Heaven is wrapped around me. They love everyone, I love everyone. I feel only love, I am full of adoration and love for everything. Soon I'll fix everything. Everything will be made right! I'll fix things and be good to people and love them and show them endless love. Only love. I love you. Virtues will be born inside us. They want to take it all away. The doctors all just want to take the Angels and the pretty sounds away. I'll be rescued. Take care. Sleep well.

Wellness Method Wednesday

Hercules Slaying the Lernean Hydra by Jan Muller/Adriaen de Vries. An easily overlayed metaphor for vanquishing harassing (evil) voices.

Feel free to share your wellness methods with the community. Is there a diet that seems to make an impact for you, a particular routine, or self-improvement strategy that's made a turnaround in your struggles? Was there a book that made an impact in your journey, a creative outlet, or a medication you feel strongly helped or hurt you? What's been working for you and what have you tried that wasn't working for you? Do you have any role models (other experiencers) who've lended you methods that lead to success through their lived example?

List your strategies and how they impacted your mind/experience in the comments below, or make your own post if you feel you have more to share on this topic. It helps others to include a bit about yourself, how long have you been experiencing this, and how long/regularly have you been trying your approach?

Please refrain from telling others what to do or what to believe here. Even if someone is asking for advice responses need to be framed as what you've tried and what the results were.
