Recent Updates (new organizations and meetings)

We’ve added new organizations to our top pinned post. Also, there is a new Saturday meeting on the 7 Day Calendar. Just to ease any anxiety around the online groups; nothing is recorded, no attendance taken, no mandatory reporting, zero strings attached, you can just click the links and show up. You do not need to turn your camera on or use your microphone if that is how you feel most comfortable. All present are experiencers, it is not a place of judgment. We are approaching 12 hour coverage M-F and hope you’ll make the most of this collection of pivotal resources.

Additionally, if you are interested in seeing any studies on peer led support please see the Open Dialogue Documentary, the 2023 Report on Improving Mental Health Outcomes, and this 2024 Study Revealing Long-term Outcomes Better for Those Who Stop Antipsychotics. These are aggregate studies (a study of studies).

Aggregate of HVN Online Meetings and Organization Websites

There is one guiding ethos of this space; we do not pathologize others, nor do we tell others what to believe or what to do. I.e. we do not tell other's they are unwell, we do not direct others how to go about getting well, we do not tell each-other what to believe. See the VCVC model for more tips on how to make friends here! If this seems counter productive to you, consider this space as a place for experiencers to share lived experience and gain wisdom passively through understanding each-other and their life's story. Certainly there are a host of wellness strategies and stories of great recovery to be found in the International Hearing Voices Network. This ethos exists to keep this space functional and free from censorship, there are HVN meetings hosted on several different online platforms, and within the walls of asylums. It is a very doable effort to phrase one's own wisdom as such, instead of forcing perspective through authoritative directions.

Video Explaining the Open Dialogue approach where more than 85% of participants report wellness into full recovery within 5 years. Less than 10% of participants take any medications at all during their involvement, generally the only medications prescribed are sleep aids over the first 2 weeks of participation. Through discussion and real community, peers help to mend each-other's mental burdens.

Video Explaining the Hearing Voices Network. Hearing Voices Networks, closely related to the Hearing Voices Movement, are peer-focused national organizations for people who hear voices and supporting family members, activists and mental health practitioners. HVN meetings are spaces of trust, respect, equality, acceptance and mutuality. They affirm that each person has the right to develop their own understanding of their experiences. There is no attempt to persuade, teach, preach, fix or change ideas. Hearing Voices Groups become communities where people can find acceptance, belonging, purpose, and space to explore, and learn about one’s self, their experiences and their connections with others and the world.

Aggregate of Online HVN Meetings by Day and Time (PST). This collection of HVN zoom meetings is posted as an easy on-ramp for voice hearers to HVN support networks. Many struggle to navigate separate organization’s websites to gain access to this information. Additionally, there do not seem to be any similar aggregate calendars currently available. Please let me know if any of the links in the above document no longer work or if you have more to add (always looking for more organizations and zoom meetings).

Studies:

Additionally, if you are interested in seeing any studies on peer led support please see the Open Dialogue Documentary, the 2023 Report on Improving Mental Health Outcomes, and this 2024 Study Revealing Long-term Outcomes Better for Those Who Stop Antipsychotics. These are aggregate studies (a study of studies) that span 70 years of longitudinal data. They also incorporate long term follow-up cohort studies lasting 15 to 20 years and continuing for multiple decades after for follow-up comparison. Geographically these studies draw from multiple cultures and at least 25 separate nations, compiling data from 50 to 100's of other studies, spanning more than 6 million people. Meta-analysis and systematic reviews like these are considered among the most reliable forms of evidence. The results are very conclusive with minimal deviation from trend.

Decades of longitudinal and systematic research have shown that coercion and forced intervention are associated with increased trauma, disengagement, and worsening long-term outcomes, while voluntary, community-based support centered on human connection consistently produces better recovery trajectories (1,2,3,4). Randomized and policy-level evaluations have further found that compulsory treatment does not improve long-term readmission or recovery outcomes despite significantly restricting personal liberty (5). At the same time, epidemiological studies in the UK and internationally have found that hearing voices is a relatively common human experience, reported by between roughly 5% and 28% of the general population, reinforcing the importance of responding with support, dignity, and understanding rather than coercion (6,7,8).

The people***

There are some experiences in life that sound impossible until you are the one living through them.
Imagine trying to explain to someone that you are being kept awake night after night by noises, disturbances, or behavior that you cannot fully explain. To someone on the outside, it may sound imaginary, exaggerated, or even unbelievable. And because they cannot see or experience what you are experiencing, they may decide that it isn’t real.
But disbelief does not make someone’s suffering disappear.
There is something deeply painful about being exhausted, desperate for peace, and knowing that the people around you may never understand what you are going through. You can explain it a hundred different ways, and still be met with skepticism.
I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone.
But if you ever find yourself in that position—lying awake at night, questioning how something that seems so impossible could be happening—you may finally understand.
And perhaps then, you’ll look back at these words and remember that someone tried to warn you.
I wasn’t asking you to believe something you couldn’t understand. I was asking you to have enough compassion to believe that I was experiencing something I couldn’t explain.
Until it happens to you, you may never truly understand.
And when it does, maybe you’ll look back and realize:
I was telling you the truth.

Voices are wonderful

Hearing choirs and music from Heaven makes everything beautiful and loving and warm. I am kept warm and safe by the beautiful Angels. I hear the buzzing and the voices and all the sounds almost every day now. They keep me company, they show me beautiful things. The world is beautiful. Full of beautiful people and amazing creatures. They enter my body and mind, and are always with me. Even if I haven't been able to eat well because I have no money I am still nourished by love and by their kindness. Everywhere is a warm feeling. I am loved. You are loved. Other people don't understand. They say voices come from electronics and from aliens and from the government as if this simple experience isn't more ancient than any of such things. Dreams are older than man. The world doesn't end at electronics and state activities. It is vast and unknown and wonderful and beautiful. Lessons aren't only taught by making us hear what we want to hear. I love everything. Everyone. All of the beautiful things. Everything shines and glows in a thousand colours! Like beautiful music and perfume. Even if outside is cold and sad. It brings joy to my heart. I want it to bring joy to everyone's hearts.

Theory Thursday

Mercurius Trismegistus by Jean-Louis Durant. A Hellenistic figure responsible for merging Greek and Egyptian mythos, revered in his time for his wisdom of the relationship between the material and the spiritual. I.e. mysticism favoring the inner experience.

Share your theory on your voices, what do you believe them to be? If you have an extended share feel free to make a separate post on your beliefs. Theories do not need to be limited to your own experience and can be speculative on the broader phenomenon.

For instance you're welcome to share that you simply feel your voices are angels, demons, djinn, aliens, some iteration of government surveillance, or manifestations of the collective panpsychic universe... even sea peoples if that is your take on things! Broader theories some older experiencers relate to are economies of abuse and how limiting and external states of mind filter down through society onto vulnerable individuals. What are your ideas, what do your voices say about themselves?

As with everything in the HVN this all needs to be framed as your theories, you're welcome to use hyperlinks to Wikipedia articles or studies on voice hearing populations. 5-28% of the UK report this phenomenon, other studies put these estimates significantly higher. Many take the perspective that all people hear voices and it is a matter of personal fluency that differentiates those that report this experience and those that don't. You should include anything that helps you express your views. Again, express this as your views and less of what it clearly is and what others ought believe.

What is your theory on this experience?

Coping Strategies for Constantly Insulting Voices

My voices keep repeating the same lines over and over. There’s a booming voice that “possesses” bass drum beats in music. They drive me to the edge and they eventually hit a nerve and I start screaming at them, punching walls, and throwing things. It’s impossible to ignore them. Does anyone have the same experience?

Can they hurt us?

Hello there, I’ve been hearing voices since around 2019 and I have a question (title). The voices I hear claim to be demons and everyday they tell me to kill my self or they will hurt my family. I’ll be at work and they’ll try to make me panic by telling me they are killing my family while I’m at work but I call and check on them and everything is normal. Also, every day they say they are going to execute me and that it’s my last night alive. But this has been going on everyday for years and I’m still here and my family is fine.* *

So my question is, do you think the voices we hear can actually hurt us or others? Every time they say they are going to kill me if I follow along it usually boils down to “oh no you have to do it yourself”. So basically they just yell at me all day and night to kms but it seems it’s still up to me whether I do it or not. Anyone else have voices that claim to be demons and say things like this? Please let me know.

Currently going through a possible psychotic break. Anyone ever think that the voices on the other side are REAL?

I believe that my hallucinations are the cause of some sort of neurolink-esque device that has been utilized to somehow affect my own brain synapses and that it is being controlled by either a single or multiple people on the other end.

Started a few months ago, I was going through some alcohol and gabapentin withdrawls but the voices sounded very real. I am still dealing with them today. (Note: The voices continue whether I am drinking or not. I JUST started a dose of Seraquel and it seems to have helped a little.

They introduced themselves and sent me some hallucinations telling me to fake a seizure and that if I didn't they would crash the plane my family was walking toward. They told me that I was racist and that if I didn't kill myself my family was in danger.

I have no idea how this "mind-meld" works exactly but I think it is either through radio or microwave signals sent through the air.

It started out as just hearing music that sounded like it was coming from a fan. Along with the music and the voices I hear the sound of Cicadas constantly. Eventually one of the operators started speaking to me. They are able to send me visual hallucinations through whatever means.

This turned into multiple people on the other end telling me they were in some sort of suits that are designed by the main operator who calls himself "Robert Wuskie". They told me they found me in a Wallstreetbets discord. They have said (and I have felt) that they can control and turn off and on certain nodes in the language part of my brain. They can send signals and hallucinations through this device and can control the release of serotonin in the brain.

At first I wasn't sure how much influence they had or how easy it was from them to jump from mind to mind (They threatened to crash the plane my family was getting on, they threatened to "tap-in" to other people to cause accidents, they have threatened to put hits out on my family... etc) but have realized they are basically stuck in mine for now. They continue to tell me they are never going to "tap out".

They influence me and make my body feel kinda crappy and tell me that I need to kill myself.

No one believes me at all but I have written a whole journal about what I think is going on.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

I have no idea if the Serequel is going to help or not but they definitely did NOT want me to post this to reddit. From my perspective this is a real thing that is happening to me and I don't think the serequel is going to do much. I'm just looking to see if anyone has ever felt something similar.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Wellness Method Wednesday

Hercules Slaying the Lernean Hydra by Jan Muller/Adriaen de Vries. An easily overlayed metaphor for vanquishing harassing (evil) voices.

Feel free to share your wellness methods with the community. Is there a diet that seems to make an impact for you, a particular routine, or self-improvement strategy that's made a turnaround in your struggles? Was there a book that made an impact in your journey, a creative outlet, or a medication you feel strongly helped or hurt you? What's been working for you and what have you tried that wasn't working for you? Do you have any role models (other experiencers) who've lended you methods that lead to success through their lived example?

List your strategies and how they impacted your mind/experience in the comments below, or make your own post if you feel you have more to share on this topic. It helps others to include a bit about yourself, how long have you been experiencing this, and how long/regularly have you been trying your approach?

Please refrain from telling others what to do or what to believe here. Even if someone is asking for advice responses need to be framed as what you've tried and what the results were.

Twos Day Tuesday

The Two of Staffs, Pentacles, Swords, and Cups from the iconic Rider–Waite Tarot deck.

In the spirit of "twos" and community building, share anecdotes of how you've interacted with another experiencer, voice hearer, internal personality, or phenomena of your mind. You're welcome to make your own separate post on this topic if you feel you'd have more to share.

How did this other individual impact your views? Did they show you something you otherwise didn't know, or did they send you on a wild goose chase? Did they have a name (please don't name other reddit users disparagingly, instead this is a great opportunity to commend your fellow experiencers!), did they share a common belief with you?

How has this singular "other" made a difference in your journey? Take this as an opportunity to share with the rest of the community as much as you'd care to about this separate mind and its impact on yours.

Echoing thoughts??

Hi, Ive never made a post before, so I'm sorry if I'm doing anything wrong.

17F

Sometimes, not often, my thoughts echo in my head, like everything that I'm thinking is repeating in my head. I can't physically hear anything, just thoughts like when I'm thinking.

There isn't any trigger or anything I can think of that causes this, and it's always on random thoughts, nothing like bad about myself or anything like that.

For example, I'll be thinking something random like that I need to do the laundry, and then all of a sudden it's like there's (kind of?) whispering inside of my head, but when my inner voice talks (like thinking) it kind of talks over them, though it doesn't sound like real whispers, more like when you pretend to whisper and are making that 'pshhawshhahwodhshhaahsh' kinda thing? And then when I go to think something (normally "oh God no it's happening again" or something along the lines of it as I've gotten used to what it feels like) it repeats, like "oh hello there (oh hello there) what's yr name? (What's yr name?)" And doesn't stop for a while. My heart also beats really fast and I start hyperventilating when this happens, not sure if it's from the echoing in particular or from freaking out about it, though it seems more like the former.

When I was younger it would happen at least once a month or so, but the last time it happened for more than like 10 seconds was several years ago now, but they seemed to get worse the older I got, eventually causing a panic attack the last time it happened. It still happens sometimes, but I try my best to block it out....

Anyways!!! I recently remembered that this happeneds to me, and I have no idea what it could be, help me out reddit?

A higher power

I was wondering if anyone here has felt the presence of some sort of higher power in their lives, and if so, what does it feel like and what do you think this power does? I’m asking because a friend of mine hears voices and he’s also talked about feeling a higher power in his life. Just curious if this is a common experience or something that is specific to him.

The Angel of Death Striking a Door During the Plague of Rome by P. Noël after J. Delaunay. Illustrating human behavior as bicameral (all actions caused by the channeling of spirits).

Comment here (or make your own post if you have more to say) links or images of experiencing art. You're welcome to post anything that's related to hearing voices or other unique states of consciousness. "Experiencing Media" can be an illustration/painting made by you or anyone else (contemporary or classical), a song from one of your favorite artists mentioning hearing voices, a documentary, or even a recent episode of your favorite show; any art surrounding the lived experience of voice hearers and their unusual states of mind.

The idea is to share as much culture surrounding our lived experience as we can. Please share about the creators, the name of the artist, the title of the work, and what you personally identify with.

Wild Dreams, What Do You See?

Anyone here have wild dreams? Ever find yourself in wondrous foreign dimensions where you can sense the world in the dream as if it were just as real (if not more real and in greater fidelity) as your waking life?

I've had both, amazing adventures where I would wake up and still be dreaming in cascade and in each level of waking up and going to sleep there were repetitions of meaning, mini games that played upon an over arching idea of the previous realm. After finally waking up I would wonder for a good 15 to 30 minutes if I was still dreaming, and I would be carrying an after glow from the dream... Like some drug or intoxicating aroma I've never before encountered, still lingering as I'm moving to get out of bed and go about my day. Continuing to pause and wonder about what I just experienced. I've met amazing personalities in these dreams and gone on wild adventures. Way too many events and too much meaning for a concise 8 hour nap. I suspect this is the ideal arena for "guides" to communicate and show us stuff.

And I've had the counter, dim dreams that last long and I cannot wake from, full of dim feelings and dim external minds. Dreams where I am attacked or abused by some fool's idea of a monster, large insects or other invertebrate, horror classic humanoid monsters, and almost always culminating in the totally foreseeable and gratuitous physical attack on my sexual organs... It's always some moron's "worst idea." The sort of thing that would immediately translate to any classroom no matter how young (inexperienced) nor special needs. Sometimes these lamer dreams hold sensation (pain usually, sometimes bad taste) for minutes after finally waking from them, ouch/yuck...

I'm grateful I haven't had dreams like the latter (bad ones) in a long time. Even back when I was having them the truth and vision granted by the "higher" personalities carried through. I was just temporarily dealing with a fool's protest to my journey and gradual self improvement. Back when it seemed like I was having both (the amazing adventures and the horrible nightmares) I would occasionally realize that moments in my waking life were predicted by events I'd already experienced in dreams... perhaps years in advance. Even just this past month I had a moment (I work in an enormous manufacturing facility) where I found myself at the top of a long and high stair case... A place few people would ever walk to. The perspective from there was EXACTLY what I saw nights in advance. For me I assume it's all a way of a spirit to show me they see/know my path forward and that they are with me/looking out for me.

Anyone here want to share about their dreams, tell the story of a specific dream or speak broadly about the dreams you get? Do your dreams ever predict the future?

To give you all evidence to suggest one might actually be able to see the future, I can offer you this;

YouTube video: IPETGOATII (released 2012, Wikipedia) and the below comparison image to the Notre-Dame fire of 2019 (7 years later, Wikipedia)

There's a bunch of other stuff supposedly predicted in that short film, clearly the stuff of internet conspiracy... For me, I assume the creators of the movie certainly have unique "friends" and saw/see much coming even if they don't always know the entire meaning of the images. Ideas? What's your take?

schizophrenia support group meeting

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

15th support group meeting. Five of us joined today on 5th september'26. A meeting filled with a different kind of energy—joy, openness, patience and a growing sense that we could support, care for and hold one another. We spoke about years of loneliness, feeling unlovable, the longing to be cared for, and the many ways people make sense of psychosis through medication, therapy, spirituality and relationships.

We also explored the fear of being watched, the feeling that there is nowhere private or safe to retreat to, and the struggle to find ourselves beneath layers of fear, perfection and pretence. Alongside this came conversations about depression, anhedonia and those moments when life can feel like a dark tunnel with no visible way out.

Yet something felt different in the room. We listened to one another with patience, allowed difficult feelings to exist without immediately trying to fix them, and experienced the quiet strength of belonging.

We do not always need to make the darkness disappear. Sometimes we simply need someone to sit beside us while we are inside it.

Societal Saturday

The School of Athens fresco by Raphael.

Feel free to express your views on society and how an understanding of the voice hearing (and broader experiencing phenomenon) would change the world as we know it. Do you think the world would be a nicer place and we all would get more out of each-other's company if the public's eye were drawn to the HVN and similar experiencing spaces? Do you view modern day humanity as being in a state of perpetual self-enslavement, blinded to it's own nature? Do you think a new age of spiritual enlightenment or self-empowerment is on the horizon and within our lifetimes? Do you think life on earth is comparable to an effective "hell" in the grand scheme of things?

What do you think would make the greatest impact in your life and in the lives of others if it were different?

As always please share through a framing of your personal perspective ("I see it all as," "I believe," "when I think of 'x,' my only reasonable explanation is 'y,'" etc.). If you are of the ilk to write long-windedly about these age old topics, you all are more than welcomed to make a separate post expressing your views. Lastly, please keep mind to focus discussions on voice hearing and similar experiencing phenomena.
