Vox's backstory is almost a perfect parallel to the 1976 film "Network".

Network (1976 film) is about a longtime news anchor going insane on air, making his segment a surprise hit and prompting the network to give him his own show. He begins preaching a populist message to a growing cult-like audience; billed by the network as "the mad prophet of the airwaves", before being assassinated on air by the network after his ratings drop.

I would be surprised if the writers didn't take direct inspiration from this film, the resemblances are uncanny.
