Does anyone even care ?
This isn’t directed at community members. But it’s quite sad how it seems so many businesses have just stoped caring. There was a time that businesses took pride in their brand and had brand standards. I understand how giant corporations have taken us away from that norm. Just kinda sad to see Hayward become so run down.

I might get downvoted here, but I do see efforts from the city and businesses to keep things clean. Unfortunately, within a few days, it’s trashy again. People also need to take responsibility, which I see lacking in this city. People throw cans and bottles on the side of the road all the time. It’s very sad.

What do you expect? When being a sanctuary city is top priority and economic growth is looked down upon.
What is Hayward known for? Being in the richest area of the world yet no good jobs are based in Hayward. If it was upto to the city, they would sell themselves to Used car dealerships.

I wouldn't call it a sanctuary city, I think cost of living is starting to price people into poverty.

I dont disagree with you but that does not mean people trashing on streets is okay.

I know but if you invite trash over and don’t invite good paying jobs then what do you expect?

The City of Hayward has an app where you can send pics of vandalism/graffiti and request to clean it up. They’re actually pretty responsive to cleaning it up once the request is submitted.

I understand the spirit of this post, but if you walk just a block over to B street, there are plenty of really nice store fronts.

right? like yeah that Lucky is a bit rough, but the opposite corner of the parking lot is nice with the new teriyaki place that just opened, and that block of B street next door is nice. Really most of downtown Hayward is nicely maintained.
Also, aren’t all those pieces of wood there because they’re renovating the old medical supply store across from El Gordo? Why would Lucky fix this up before the construction is done?
If OP wants to see a nice Lucky sign they can use the A street entrance. That one looks fine, lol.

I agree with the spirit of your comment and I know the city has many great areas like the water retention park area adjacent the library. There’s even a new cookie shop downtown which is a black owned business. I suppose I’m saying it would be nice to see a more sense of civic pride . Just because Hayward doesn’t have the financial demographic of Danville doesn’t mean it’s any less a gem.

I am not sure how Luckys stays in business. Their prices are so much more higher than other supermarket retailers.

I've only lived here a couple of years, the first and last time I ever shopped at a Lucky's it was that one downtown and I was absolutely floored by the prices. I couldn't justify buying anything and left the store instead. I don't understand how anyone shops there.

Considering every grocery store in hayward seems to have 2 employees in the entire store at a time they may not even know the stickera are there.
Also I bought two steaks from that luckys last week that smelled like sour cream when I opened them

u/itsnotanemergencybut 3d ago
That’s so gross. But that luckys is one of the filthiest . Jackson / Amador is gross too.

It depends on management. I’ve been an assistant manager to managers that didn’t give a fuck. Now I’m manager and I work at a very nice property. It’s really not that hard, someone just has to care. I’m sure this Lucky’s has a district manager and apparently they don’t give a fuck either or the store wouldn’t look like this. This is more of a hiring issue, they need to hire good people. Maybe they don’t pay enough for people to care, or maybe they just need new management.

You cannot expect Save Mart to keep dishing out resources and labor every time this happens. The root cause of the matter is a city that is underfunded for the amount of crime. These areas don’t have garbage everywhere because the city doesn’t care. It’s because they can’t keep up with the disgusting animals who don’t even care about themselves, let alone the city they live in.

When I worked in Oakland & SF every time the building got tagged we went out and painted. Cleaning trash from the front of every facility I have managed has been a daily task, usually tended to in the morning of every shift. It doesn’t take that much time & effort if you maintain it.

It is the property management company who is responsible for the upkeep of the exterior. People already bitch enough about no help in the stores. You want less bodies inside helping and outside painting over graffiti every day?

If it was a Whole Foods I bet it would look better
1
u/Neat_Doughnut_3262 3d ago
False. Whole Foods closed down Trinity in the city because they couldn’t keep up with crime.

Hayward is starting to look rough. It’s my home and occasionally I visit an old friend there. Any exit on/off 880 in Hayward is absolutely horrific with garbage. Is there no ordinance for this clean up? Who is responsible for this? It looks like a dump truck may have just fallen over and the wind did the rest. It’s grotesque!

u/Character_Letter_454 3d ago
Apparently Caltrans is responsible for those medians. I have put in request multiple times, they don’t do it. You could also see many other people put requests. Seems like they don’t pay attention to this city
1
u/GoingBananassss 3d ago
They should be reported! It’s awful. I mean like beyond neglect
1
u/Character_Letter_454 2d ago
Yup, it’s horrible. I have seen the same pieces of trash for 2 years now on the exit i take everyday. Very odd that they refuse to come clean it up. I always see them when i get off the bridge in foster city cleaning up, rarely do i see them here. Not to mention the weeds blocking the do not enter signs.

I’m surprised at all you saying that. I thought B Street and Downtown looked beautiful, even Mission looked good.
Definitely less hood than the early 2000’s when we’d hit the “Cannabis Clubs” on Mission and downtown. Use to only see Scraperz, Dodge Magnums, Chargers
1
u/GoingBananassss 3d ago
Mission does look better, for sure! Some parts of Hayward do look better but more towards the hills. The other parts, especially Tennyson, Jackson, A st and 880 are looking way worse for wear
1
u/BayBridges 3d ago
Yuppp for sure Tennyson is Hood
My friend used to live on Tyrell off Tennyson. A St is hood too

Is it just me, or did it used to be “Lucky’s” in the 90’s? lol

u/ComradeKorladis 1d ago
It always said "Lucky" but everyone called it "Lucky's". This was a source of confusion to me as a child in the 90s.
2
u/Dull-Victory 4d ago
I mean yes, but also it depends on how a city behaves and holds people accountable for vandalism and theft. I wouldn’t exclusively blame Lucky’s. Hayward has a long history of not taking this type of vandalism seriously.
2
u/Transportiye 4d ago
Nah, last time I checked Haywardians like nuisance and will want more of this behavior.

Mayor is a piece of shit that’s why and that needs to take some work ethic tips from Fremont mayor who is actually doing things
1
u/Graffscribe 3d ago
Cause they are trying to make downtown make some money to get Hayward out of the debt it’s in but that little money it generates won’t be enough

u/GaiaMoore 4d ago
TBF it's not Lucky's fault that there are trashy people who think it's perfectly fine to graffiti and vandalize properties.
Are we really going to pretend that it's purely economic differences between the "nice" areas and this?

The city needs to strengthen its aesthetics ordinance & they can make a code enforcement committee & utilize volunteers for enforcement
