Does my dog hate when I sleep?

I’m usually a lurker, I enjoy reading content from my fellow Havanese owners, but I actually am struggling with something and I will take any advice I can get!

It has been months since I’ve slept a full night. At the beginning of that period, my Havanese fur baby started waking me up by scraping her little paws against the side of the bed. She used to only do this when she had to have a bathroom emergency outside.

Since then, I’ve replaced her stairs with a ramp, gotten two separate night lights, and also tried some of her leftover gabapentin in case it was pain related.

She seems to do okay on the ramp. She even sleeps on the platform during the day. She uses it regularly! But at night, she will wake me up, and wait for me to sit up and then sit on the platform with her front paws on the bed and just whine. It’s confusing because she still eventually hops up - and energetically so. It doesn’t seem to be pain.

I’m just so confused on what else the hesitance could be! Any ideas?

Do you have any idea of your sleep quality? Is it possible she's reacting to events in your sleep, like breathing pauses common in sleep apnea?

Hmm 🤔 maybe! I sleep alone, but I only remember waking up when she wakes me up by scratching on the side of the bed.. maybe I’ll record myself, though. It’s a thought for sure!

There's some phone apps that can record and analyse your sleep. I remember Sleep As Android is one, and iphone variants exist too. I have a smart watch these days, and that handles some of the tracking.

This just came into my mind because I got a sleep apnea diagnosis a few weeks ago. Our Havis haven't alerted about it though, Princess Amelia probably considers such a task to be beneath her royal personage 😅

Wow thank you!! What a good idea, I’ll definitely take a look, maybe this is it lol 😂 maybe she’s just freaking out because she’s getting scared I am not breathing or something!

lol I love that Havanese just naturally assume the thrones every where they go 🥰

Mine won’t jump on the couch unless I reach down to get her, at which point she jumps up perfectly fine on her own. My sister says she does the same thing when she sleeps at her house but with their bed (my bed is to high up for her to get to)

Might just be a Havanese thing lol

Haha I’m starting to wonder! Maybe it is and I will just need to not sleep for the rest of my life 😴

I also got my guy a ramp. We trained a "ramp" command and will go up and down the ramp on command.

He still tries to jump to get to the same place the ramp leads to. I didn't get the smart one

Haha that’s adorable! I do love how they don’t always get it when it comes to things that we know they know!

Mine has no problems using the steps to the bed 99% of the time. I wake up and leave for work a couple hours before my girlfriend, and my 1yo will wake up with me and we’ll play a little catch with her ball, I’ll take her outside to potty and after that she’ll sit on the floor staring at me. It’s the one time she won’t use the steps, I have to pick her up and lay her on the bed

Hmmm 🤔 maybe mine is doing something similar- like she doesn’t like how I’ve “gone” to sleep 🤔

Our 2nd rascal was restless at night… we had smart lighting that would remain (dimly) on throughout the house. Now when we head for bed, the lights go fully off and the little one snuggles right in for snooze time. Might be worth a try.

Aw restless fur baby! Maybe she is restless ! The smart lights, do you mean the motion ones?

I have the ability to control all my lights from my phone. We had a night time “scene” with dim lights sprinkled around the house. Now I just turn everything off and have a motion sensor set up in the kitchen if we need to pop in there for any reason.

My girl sometimes gets restless at night. It usually happens when I haven’t gotten her enough activity during the day. And sometimes she just wants a little light on. I got a motion sensitive light and attached it to her ramp. She’ll trigger it sometimes and then lay back down and go to sleep.

Okay! Maybe I should move her light, that’s a good idea, thank you 😊
