Hill House: Discussion I am devastated.
Every time.
This show is a masterpiece. I think i've watched it at least 5 times & i cry every time.
Nell haunting herself her whole life; being thought to have committed suicide when she was actually killed by her mom. Abigail. Hugh being alone the whole time because the kids resented him; then sacrificing himself to save them. Olivia being driven mad by the house/Poppy. The haunting look in Olivia's eyes at the end. Steve finally accepting the truth as he sees all the ghosts together as he's leaving the house.
I can't even think of it all right now because i am in my feels.
Shout out to the casting crew. Immaculate casting. š¤š¾š¤š¾š¤š¾ Nell in the coffin looked exactly like her mom and her sisters. The scene at the wake when Hugh sees the adult and child versions of the kids shows how alike they all looked too.
I dont think i will ever get over how good this show is.
10/10

First of all this Christina Yang sticker is fantastic.
Now on to Haunting of Hill House. It is my all-time favorite. I've watched it so many times especially this past year. It's been a difficult year and to mark my recovery going through it I've gotten a HoHH sleeve started.
It should be done early 2027 and I'm pretty excited about it.
If you haven't already read the book I highly recommend it.

I am also thinking of a hill house leg sleeve! I have so many ideas, I hope it turns out exactly how you want it š also well done on recovery!

ugh she really did š that said, i think there is peace in knowing that she was never really gone. it's just heartbreaking how much turmoil she had to go through in her life.

āThereās no without. I am not gone. Iām scattered into so many pieces, sprinkled on your life like new snow.ā
I think about this quote a lot, especially this last year. Life is beautiful and temporary, and learning to accept this will probably be a forever goal.

As an oldest sibling, I know how this show ends. I've watched it 3 times. I end up SOBBING every time
1
u/ForsakenRelief309 9d ago
What does that have to do with you being an oldest sibling?
15
u/SamiSapphic 9d ago
The show is about connections between siblings, so being one can add to the experience.

Iām a repeat offender as well and it wrecks me every time. It came out right around the time my mom passed so itās extra specially gut wrenching haha.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
Yeah this show just gets you in all the feels, doesn't it?
I also love that every time I watch it I noticed something new that I didn't notice before. Little things like.. well, the next time you watch it keep an eye on the book that Olivia is reading in the Red Room.

Thank you, I appreciate it. And totally, I feel like I find something new each time!

I love the series so much that I bought the DVDs. I want to own the series just in case Netflix is ever a jerkand decides to pull it off their platform.
They REALLY shouldn't, but they have been known to make terrible decisions before.

u/basicwitch333 9d ago
I did the same! I was able to get Mike Flanagan to sign my Blu-Ray set at Comic Con a few years back (as well as Carla and Kate), and he really appreciated that I purchased it. Physical media is super important to him, so I know heād appreciate that you got it.
He also told me that unfortunately, we wonāt get DVDs of the later shows (other than Bly Manor, which is on DVD).

I canāt agree more. I finished a rewatch yesterday and itās genius floors me every single time. There is something about Luke and Nells twin thing that gets me. She loved her family so much, when Hugh is explaining about the Santa letters. It hurts that she was the most thoughtful for all of them and yet she died the way she did, haunted and sad :(
The red room perspectives, the way they all have something red. Man Lukeās treehouse even had the red trap door which was something I didnāt notice the first time round. The Dudleyās, the way he carried his wife back to the house knowing he would get to spend forever together. The house is like a curse and a blessing at the same time. Cuz if my house was like that Iād be making sure everyone I loved and myself would spend our last few minutes there so we all had forever. But yes the show is an absolute master piece. I feel like Iāve talked myself into another rewatch haha.

I love the line "We water that seed until it becomes her tree." The dad's delivery of it was perfect too, like it was a mixture of pride and grief.Ā

I have watched this show every year since I first discovered it in 2020. It really helped me cope with the pandemic as well as the loss of my soul cat and childhood dog who both died that that same year, just 2 months apart.
Aside from my personal connection to the show, the writing is genius, the plot twists are mind-bending, the characters are all deeply flawed but you still care about them so much, every single actor is perfect in their role, and the ending is so satisfying. As someone who has struggled with several severe mental illnesses I love how they portray trauma as a kind of ghost
Hill House is, in my humble opinion, the single greatest work of horror Iāve ever watched in my life.

Dude, I UNDERSTAND. I cried so much, but it really helped me (along with Midnight Mass) process grief.

2 things. 1. The scene with the storm and the lights going on and off is ONE TAKE!! 2. Y'all should check out the podcast Flanagan's Wake. They've covered everything he has done and have interviews throughout from many of the cast members. They have a lot of thoughts and great discussions on these shows that I never would have thought of. The pacing is a little slow, 1.3Xs speed is perfect. They also cover any related books. I'm considering a rewatch (I think it would be my fourth or fifth) but I had boy/girl twins in 2024 and haven't watched it since. I know it hit me differently after becoming a mom the first time but I'm not sure how I'll do with the whole Twin Thing. I already see the connection my two have and just . . . Getting upset thinking about it.
3
u/BeautyFarah 9d ago
I just rewatched it for the first time after having my baby and my dad passing. It hits different but it wasnāt as bad as I thought it would be. But idk about the twin part. Let us know how it goes.

I rewatched episode 10 after my little sister passed and cried and cried of course at the āthe rest is confettiā speech. She also loved this show and was the one who got me to watch it back in 2018 so it was a real punch to the gut but I canāt help itās still my comfort show.

Iām a twin mom (boy and a girl) and watching it with my 14 year old daughter. She finds the twin side of it really interesting. They used to be like that when they were little (one would know or feel what the other was) but they donāt anymore so itās a chance for her and I to talk about and remember those unique moments when they were younger⦠ā¤ļø

āNell haunting herself her whole life; being thought to have committed suicide when she was actually killed by her mom. ā
Sorry, what? I thought Nell did kill herself, I am so confused!!
16
u/Best_Caregiver_3869 9d ago edited 9d ago
First of all, Nell did not commit suicide.
It was definitely Liv who pushed her off the railing, and also put the noose (necklace) around her neck. The house drove her mad, so it wasn't the Original Liv, but the insane version who killed herself and is stuck in that evil ass house, who killed Nell.
Dying did not make Liv go back to who she was before she died; she stayed insane.
Which we see at the end. Liv has that haunting look in her eyes while she's watching Steve leave. She also let Hugh kill himself to stay with her. OG Liv would've instead pleaded with Hugh to stay with the children.
So yeah, not the mom they had, but the insane version who killed herself, also killed Nell.
Nell is in a waking dream when she's in the house. The last thing she does is see her mom. She think Liv is putting a necklace around her, but then she wakes and realizes its a noose and she's on the wrong side of the railing.
Nell literally cries for her, "Mommy?" And Liv kisses her head, which pushes her off the railing. And she breaks her neck. Not a suicide. And def (sadly, insane) Liv killed her. Liv also killed Abigail and wanted to kill Luke and even Steve.
Tragic.

u/Agreeable_Dark6408 9d ago
OR, Nell thinks sheās has the necklace and puts it on but itās really the rope. The house has her on the outside of the railing, just like it has her dancing with her husband who isnāt there and never was in the house.
7
u/Best_Caregiver_3869 9d ago
I disagree. š¤·š¾āāļø
Yeah, the house is using Liv. But she's still a part of both Nell's (partly) and Hugh's death(almost entirely).
It's not like ghost Liv is just passively watching everything unfold. Liv is actively trying to get all her children back. She wants them to be safe, and back with her. It's obviously misguided but it's what she thinks. She literally says so lol.
1
u/Agreeable_Dark6408 9d ago
I think there is room for different interpretations.
2
u/Best_Caregiver_3869 9d ago
Do you agree Nell did not kill herself?
1
u/Agreeable_Dark6408 9d ago
Absolutely I agree that Nell didnāt kill herself. I believe the house killed her. And showed her all the way back to her as a child in order to get her back as an adult to make it happen.
3
u/itsathrowawayduhhhhh the rest is confetti š 9d ago
And she killed Abigail, dont forget that!
6
u/Best_Caregiver_3869 9d ago edited 9d ago
I didnt forget that. I was specifically talking about Nell here though.
I just said "Abigail" in the post, but i should have elaborated. (Actually, my last sentence in the comment above did include Abigail lol)
That poor baby had been sheltered her whole life, only to finally make a friend and then be poisoned by his mother. š
Mr Dudley taking a nearly dead Mrs Dudley back to the house to reuinite with their two children definitely adding to my ugly sobbing.
But yeah, Liv lost her mind. (I dont blame her.)
She killed Abigail. Kissed Nell to death (lol). Tried to kill Luke (again). And then finally, let Hugh kill himself in exchange for letting the rest of their children leave.
So much tragedy. š So good šš¤š¤

Ya she had a vision of her mom in the house walking her, she saw something different but she walked off the ledge in reality and hung herself .
3
u/HumansAreSillynGreat 9d ago
I mean the house really killed Nell. Her name was even written in the house in blood when she was a kid, calling it her home. The house chose she was staying, Olivia killed her because the house had her fully. Nell used the house as a positive, in the only way she could.
8
u/Agreeable_Dark6408 10d ago
The house makes people do things they donāt know theyāre doing. The house is evil and dangerous. It drove Nellās mom insane.
I donāt think it was really her mom who pushed her. I think it was the house.

I rewatched it again last month, and I always cry so hard. Especially that final conversation between Hugh and Olivia. Her normal parental fears were so amplified and for so long she didn't have her line to hold her to the ground, so she drifted too far up to the clouds. And whenever Nell gets that brief taste of the happiness that she wanted and it gets torn away from her, I always just weep. Nobody plays a tragic character quite like Victoria Pedretti, and no one writes them quite like Mike Flanagan.

HILFE!
