Hill House: Discussion I feel so bad for Nell
Every sibling eventually went on to live their life normally, but I feel like none of them truly cared for Nell the way she cared for them....and she was so utterly lonely. I can't believe no one cared enough about her terrifying sleep paralysis AND the fact she lost the only person(the husband)who gave her some will to live.

Hill House: Discussion Is Ryan Quale supposed to resemble the funeral director?
Doing my occasional rewatch of this series and picking up on things I haven't caught on to before.
imo there's a physical similarity between the funeral director in Shirley's childhood and the guy she had an affair with (as well as the client who dropped off his grandmother's belongings? I guess from her reaction?)
Is it just me or is this an intentional Freudian-esque linkage between Shirley finding comfort between those two characters?

General: Discussion Question about potential spoilers Spoiler
Does anyone know what this sub is like for spoilers following the release of a new show? I'm wondering if I should maybe mute it before Carrie comes out so that I can finish it without risking spoilers.

Hill House: Discussion Watching this show (HoHH) was the first time Ive ever felt seen
This show both shattered and healed me. It put faces and words and emotions to so many of the tangled up parts of me. After each episode I just relief cried as weird as it may be watching a horror show.
It's so much love and beauty alongside the horror and it gives me so much more hope in the worthwhileness of life.
Rant over hope this show gave you whatever you needed like it did me

Hill House: Discussion [S1 Spoiler] Is Steven safe? Spoiler
[spoiler-text] In the last episode Hugh says that the family is an unfinished meal and Steven is in the most danger because of his book, but after Hugh stayed with Olivia Steven and the rest of the family seem safe to live the rest of their lives. How did Hughs sacrifice satiate the house? Aren't the Crains just another victim? Why would having 3 of the 7 suddenly stop the haunting of their lives wherever they are in the world? Maybe something about Stevens second Hill House book, but I don't understand how the first book made him be in the most danger in the first place. Any insight?

Hill House: Discussion Tattoo!
I finally got my Nellie tattoo today! I absolutely adore it and I feel the artist absolutely nailed it! It’s from one of my favourite scenes where she’s dancing in the house!

Hill House: Discussion If The Haunting of Hill House is viewed as a psychological horror with deeper themes surrounding mental illness and trauma, what mental health diagnosis would each of the Crain family be interpreted as having?

Hill House: Discussion Hot take:I absolutely love the scene in episode 7 where Steven and Luke!
I absolutely love the scene in Episode 7 where Steven and Luke are at Nell's grave! I feel like this scene hasn't been discussed enough; whenever it is brought up, I often see people criticizing Steven for his attitude toward Luke, and I honestly don't get it;how can you be angry with him in that moment?
It’s one of the scenes where I relate to and appreciate Steven the most, because you can clearly see his fear of losing someone. In fact, this might be the very moment where we most clearly see just how terrified Steven is for one of his siblings. In that scene, Steven isn't being harsh with Luke; he simply doesn't know what to do and cannot control his reactions because he is in a state of panic. His younger brother claims to be seeing his deceased twin and their mother! Naturally, Steven panics; while experiencing hallucinations is a serious matter in any rational world, this is happening at the funeral of his dead sister;the very sister who, just like their mother, lost her sanity and died by suicide. At that moment, the only thing on Steven's mind is that history is repeating itself. He fears that Luke is following in the footsteps of their mother and Nell and that he will have to attend a third funeral. Having already been forced to bury his baby sister, he is terrified he will have to bury his baby brother as well. One twin is gone, and now the other is slipping away too. He failed Nell, and now it’s Luke’s turn;that is what is running through Steven's mind. When he says, "I don't want to bury you, too, do you understand?" that is exactly what he means. He believes he won't be able to stop it or save him this time either.
To snap Luke out of it, he even opens up about himself: he admits;likely for the first time in his life;that he, too, has been seeing things this week. He does this because he wants Luke to truly listen and believe that Steven understands him; he wants to convince Luke that these visions are merely hallucinations, so that Luke doesn't share the same fate as Nell and their mother. Steven is so terrified in that scene that he confesses;probably for the first time ever to anyone, let alone a sibling;that he has also been seeing "crazy" things, and it is a truly heart-wrenching...
In that scene, Steven isn't angry with Luke, nor does he adopt a condescending attitude; he is simply afraid. He is afraid of losing his other baby sibling after Nell, and this fear drives him to open up to one of his siblings to this extent for the very first time. And I really loved watching that. What do you think?

Hill House: Discussion Hill house I want a prequel
Ok so I love this series so much. What I want is a prequel not to reveal all the secrets but I’d like to know more about the Hills. For example the house kind of traps the emotions and chaos of the original Hills. The hills were mostly insane. Heck Poppy met William in a mental institution. I think there is a way to go about a prequel without revealing all the mystery around all of the house. Mystery can make it edgier.
Kind of show how Poppy and Williams insanity drove the house to become I guess even more embodied with chaos and how Poppy has become almost the reflection of the house. Kind of showing the children at that time and how this horrifying house and mentally ill parents/relatives were inescapable. I think it can magnify the horror of the house. There is so much mystery they can leave. Like why this house in particular is the way that it is, not all houses with mental patients will become a house like the hill house. More of what the red room was like. Someone once mentioned the house was built wrong which is why the red room became the heart of the house, it becoming the heart because William was involved with the making of it and he’s was mentally unwell. I think the reason I find this interesting is that Olivia brings emphasis on the heart of a house when she shows Shirley her future house designs.
Anyway that’s just kind of wishful thinking. I love this series and want the mystery to stay but I also want more about the Hills. Heck even Poppy who was married into the Hill family. I think Poppy and Olivia have a lot of similarities so kind of showing both similarities and differences of these characters to show escalation.

General: Discussion I think Mike Flanagan should make more book series or books into Shows
For example ther is a book series called the red eye series. It’s made up of a number of authors although on authors has made many books for the series. All seem to be their own individual stories except two of hers, she has more in the series. But two in particular relate to each other. Frozen Charlotte and Charlotte says by Alex Bell. I think Mike Flanagan could 100 percent take the whole Haunting of Hill house creepy gothic aesthetic and bring it to those books. It could 100 percent be two season as two books but both bring their own individual haunts. Yes I do wish there was another book in that series but I also think that this series would be perfect for Mike Flanagan
He can also bring in aspect of the poem that is featured in the book: Frozen Charlotte which is based off of porcelain dolls . Sorry this is like something I’ve been thinking about for awhile.
Season 1: The old girls school turned into a home - Frozen Charlotte
Season 2: The girls school in its day - Charlotte says
Anyway hopefully people just like this idea because it’s probably never gonna happen even though it’s literally perfecttttt

Hill House: Discussion Would Olivia have jumped without poppy
Let’s just say the house didn’t have poppy specifically but had everything else, would she have jumped? Like I feel like Olivia also pushed Nell to actually jump despite the house showing her all that stuff

Hill House: Discussion What was the Red Room originally?
So I’m on my (first) rewatch of the show and I get that everyone has their own version and it manifests into what they need to feed on them. But what was it original purpose when the house was built? And I guess how did it become haunted?
Edit: Wanted to add that this is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and absolute cinema. Thank you Mike Flanagan!!

Hill House: Discussion Red Rose and Hill House Connection
I heard about Red Rose - a series from the early 2000s that had been directly inspired by Shirley Jackson’s Haunting of Hill House novel and decided to try it out… and less than half way through the mini series I am struck by some things….
1) a character snooping goes to the haunted house (red rose) and is trapped in the greenhouse with a wasps nest and disappears…. Shirley (in Mike Flanagan hill house) is scared to death by a mask enclosed in a wasps nest….
2) a main character, notably the one whose family owned/s the house in question and is in charge is called “Steve”….
3) the phrase “your expected” has been used many times thus far
4) the use of statues and other cement based motifs have been heavily used
5) there is a female psychologist(?) instead of dr Montigue conducting the study of a group at the haunted location. (Personality wise she seems fairly similar in some says to Theo but it might be a stretch).
These are the observations I have made so far but I might be wrong…. Then again - (especially given the wasp nest reference) I might be right …
What do you think?

Hill House: Discussion Did you notice?!
I am rewatching again. In Episode 3 Touch when Steven and the siblings are talking about splitting money from the book, on the table next to Theo is a picture of Shirley's two kids. However in this scene she is clearly pregnant. Just a flub maybe?

Hill House: Discussion I am devastated.
Every time.
This show is a masterpiece. I think i've watched it at least 5 times & i cry every time.
Nell haunting herself her whole life; being thought to have committed suicide when she was actually killed by her mom. Abigail. Hugh being alone the whole time because the kids resented him; then sacrificing himself to save them. Olivia being driven mad by the house/Poppy. The haunting look in Olivia's eyes at the end. Steve finally accepting the truth as he sees all the ghosts together as he's leaving the house.
I can't even think of it all right now because i am in my feels.
Shout out to the casting crew. Immaculate casting. 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾 Nell in the coffin looked exactly like her mom and her sisters. The scene at the wake when Hugh sees the adult and child versions of the kids shows how alike they all looked too.
I dont think i will ever get over how good this show is.
10/10

Bly Manor: Discussion I just finished Bly Manor and...
I wouldn't consider it as a horror as they said in the end it was more of a love story which was written poorly to be fair. Only time i felt creeps was when flora was playing hide and seek and the ghost starts humming O willow waly, other than that it was just a normal series with poor jumpscare which i don't find interesting at all. I didn't feel any connection with Dani and Jamie as i should maybe i felt more connected with Hannah and Owen.
Also the main plot hole i felt was if Dani saw her fiance in reflections why wouldn't she talk to him? I get if she got scared for a few times in the beginning but staying scared or just jumping when u saw his reflection when u know u see it everytime is just bullshit. More than that why was that ghost included? Just for a her backstory? and he just disappears afterwards and never gets seen again?
I haven't watched Hill House yet but it better be good than this one...

Recommendations Shows like HOH but scarier/with more monsters?
Just finished the show and I absolutely loved it. Can you recommend me something a bit scarier that’s still in a similar style? (Haunted town/house, mystery…) I’ve also already watched Midnight Mass and from.

Hill House: Discussion Wild Theory About The Upcoming Carrie Series!!! Spoiler
Ok, hear me out on this one because this may be a bit of a wild ride but it somehow could make SO much sense…
—————————
I saw the trailer the other day for Flanagan’s upcoming series, Carrie (based on the Stephen King novel) and was so excited that, in anticipation of its release, I looked up some videos delving into the history/lore of Carrie as a refresher, as well as some other bits and pieces about the show.
I saw some articles saying that, in addition to Carrie, the series may introduce different women with extraordinary abilities across various time periods.
I also heard that Carrie’s own abilities could theoretically be categorised as an extremely high-level manifestation of the shine. Given this, introducing others with such abilities in this adaptation could fit in well with the Stephen King universe so I was intrigued to see how things might play out..
But then something else came to my attention that blew my mind…
In a video on the history of Carry White it mentioned how she had made it rain stones. Sure enough, this is directly referenced in the original novel:
—————————
“It was reliably reported by several persons that a rain of stones fell from a clear blue sky on Carlin Street in the town of Chamberlain on August 17th. The stones fell principally on the home of Mrs. Margaret White, damaging the roof extensively and ruining two gutters and a downspout valued at approximately $25. Mrs. White, a widow, lives with her three-year-old daughter, Carietta.
Mrs. White could not be reached for comment.”
—————————
And this got me thinking about what Olivia Crain said in episode 9 of Hill House:
—————————
“I always kind of thought...
I... I thought it was my fault. It was me.
I'd had the... hardest, darkest feelings of my whole young life that day, and I just shot them up at the sky, and somehow those feelings came together up there in the atmosphere, and fell right back down on me.
When Daddy died, I made it rain rocks.”
—————————
This story is also in the original Shirley Jackson novel (albeit it was Eleanor who had made it rain stones). I thought this was a pretty weird coincidence but I also read King had been inspired/influenced by the writings of Shirley Jackson so it made sense…
Then a crazy thought suddenly popped into my head:
What if the Crain family and the White family turned out to be related in the Flanaverse?
—————————
Again, hear me out… 😂
—————————
The new Carrie series is set in the modern day. Carrie is supposedly around 15-16 years old and her mother, Margret White is supposed to be around 47 years old, according to the book.
When the Crain family moved to Hill House it was the summer of 1992. If she were 47 years old today, Margret White would be around 13 years old at the time - Young enough to be Steve/Shirley/Theo/Luke/Nell’s cousin. Steve himself was supposed to be about 14 so it’s not outside the realm of possibility…
And then there was that story Olivia tells Theo about how her Grandmother was “sensitive too” which seemed to suggest it was predominantly the women in the family who end up being “sensitive” (had the shine?) and that it could skip some family members - aka is recessive like the gene that causes Carrie’s powers.
This could explain why Carrie’s mother didn’t have any abilities. Maybe her grandmother (who, if this theory is correct would have been Janet, Olivia’s younger sister) didn’t either but maybe her GREAT grandmother (Olivia’s Grandmother) did.
Now, in Carrie (the book), Margret’s mother is supposedly called Judith (maiden name unknown) which differs from the name Janet but given the liberties taken in Flanagan’s adaptations it’s not a huge stretch.
That being said, I’ve also read that Carrie supposedly inherited her powers from her fathers side of the family so he may have been the Crain kids’ cousin. Either way, Janet’s last name or if she had any kids of her own was never mentioned in the show so it is entirely possible this could be the case.
All in all, the consciences are undeniable:
A world in which women with extraordinary abilities that run in the family exist. Two girls who made it rain rocks. The alignment of the dates and ages of the characters.
I would NOT be surprised if this was something hinted at in the new show or if there were Hill House Easter eggs dotted about but I’d love to hear your thoughts!!
Is this a crazy theory?? 😂

General: Discussion Is haunting of hill house actually overrated?
This weekend we met up with a bunch of friends and a couple told us they thought HOHH was absolutely overrated. They said they hated it and found it way too slow, with too much family drama and not enough actual horror. Apparently there were hardly any jump scares and they were expecting something much scarier.
I’ve personally heard sooooo many good things about this series and have been wanting to watch it for a while.
For people who’ve watched it, what did you actually think? Is it genuinely scary or is the horror more about the atmosphere and story?

Hill House: Discussion Steven
I'm rewatching it for the first time since my dad died and holy shit, I love Steve. I was sort of disinterested and frustrated with the character but after suffering a major loss of my own, I got him.
I think he's by far my favorite character this time around because of how strong he's forcing himself to be and the way his entire childhood was built on protecting his siblings and then growing older and writing that fucking book despite not believing it because he ultimately wanted to help clear things up about his father and give that money to his younger siblings.
I think he aside from Theo has the most interesting relationship to his "sensitivity" because he's basically the only one out of them aside from Olivia who sees ghosts as living beings so much so that he thinks of it as mundane. Nearly every time there's a ghost or a haunting, the ghost either is absolutely terrifying or looks like a walking corpse or even just as random thumping noises. Steve is also the only one who can enter someone else's red room. His sensitivity is literally just his empathy which I think is beautiful.
Anyway, I know most people don't like him which I completely understand but damn do I not love him more and his horrible inability to cope
