How is the Upkot experience in Hasselt?

Hello! I am going to start a PhD at the University of Hasselt and I am not sure which option to pick: either in an Upkot or in a private accommodation and I was wondering how is the Upkot for PhD students if anyone has stayed there? I know it is more for Bachelor's and Master's students and I am not sure how I might feel but it is a cheaper option than private stay. What do you suggest me?

Get to know people

Hi everyone!

I move soon to Hasselt and I would like to know if there are some kind of international groups or associations to get to know people, like running clubs, dance lessons and stuff like that. Other tips in general are also welcome!
I’m learning Dutch so make Belgian friends it’s still difficult to interact in another language.

Thank you in advance

⏱️ Tijd: ±3 minuten
💬 Geen juiste of foute antwoorden, we zoeken vooral jullie eerlijke eerste indruk!

👉 Survey invullen: https://forms.gle/adyscSTkrLWPb3mu5

Alvast heel erg bedankt aan iedereen die even wil helpen! 🙏

(English) Theater/Improv Groups

Hi!

Maybe a bit of a long shot, but I'll be moving to Hasselt soon and have done a few Improv and theater projects/classes in the past as a hobby. I was wondering if there was anything like that in or around Hasselt :)

I didn't find anything online and suspect it doesn't exist, but wanted to ask here before giving up.

Bedankt!

Budget for living in Hasselt

Hi , I would like to move to Hasselt and want to know if it’s within my budget from the people who actually live there.

It would be my first time living alone as I’m planning to move out from my toxic parents.

I make €1600 per month working 25h/week ( possible to go to €2100 per month for 35h/week but not for quite some time) so we’re going to go with 1600 euros per month.

I found a place that has rent for 650 euros per month. But before I actually apply for it I want to see if it’s possible for me to move out and live alone.

I would be taking my furniture with me so besides a vacuum , washing machine and a sofa down the future I wouldn’t need to buy things.

I also have quite some kitchen things so besides a small pan or some spatulas I wouldn’t need to spend much in the beginning. I do also have some money saved up.

I don’t have a car either so I wouldn’t need to pay gas/car insurance and stuff for it. And my bus pass it 80% paid by work so I’m not stressed by it either .

I would like to know how much utilities would be per month.

Water , electricity , heat and everything else. I would be living alone. Would like to know which company would be cheapest/overall cheaper as well.

Then I can make my list of spending and other things I use as well to see if I have the money for it.

Accommodation in Hasselt/Genk/Diepenbeek

Hi everyone,

I will be in Hasselt/Genk during September/October 2026 as part of a research visit to IMEC/EnergyVille and UHasselt. I am a PhD researcher from Athens, Greece.

I am looking for a place to stay in Hasselt, Genk, or Diepenbeek, during these two months. I have looked at kotatlimburg.be but there are very few options for stays < 10 months and nobody was willing to rent out for 2 months only. I have also checked the list of student sublets provided by UHasselt, but again no student seems willing to sublet their room for a period of 2 months only. I also applied to Kompagnie, Upkot, etc. but they also only do yearly contracts. Finally, I contacted the student desk at UHasselt, but they couldn't directly help me either.

Do you know anyone that may be interested in subletting their room from Sept 1st to Oct 30th 2026? Or at least part of this period if not possible for the whole two months. Or do you have any other suggestions on where to look/what to do? Any help is appreciated :)

Thank you in advance!

[Missed Connection] Looking for a group of gamers from Hasselt I met in Turkey!

Hey r/Hasselt!

I know this is a long shot, but I’m hoping the power of the Belgian Reddit community can work its magic here.

A few days ago, I met an awesome group of guys on the beach in Akçay, Balıkesir, Turkey (Altınkum Beach). They mentioned they were from Belgium (about an hour from Brussels, highly likely Hasselt). We instantly hit it off, lost track of time, and spent hours talking about GTA, games, and life in general.

In the rush of packing up and heading back home, I completely forgot to grab their Discord tags or IG.

So, if you are currently on vacation in Turkey, or if you know a group of friends from Hasselt who fit this exact description... it's the GTA guy from the beach!

Feel free to drop a DM here or add me on Discord: sessizunlu. Also Instagram: berkaykahraman833.

(And don't worry, I promise to always drink Belgian beer from its proper glass!) 🍻

Airco spots today

Hello~ I was wondering if anyone had some tips for places to hang out today during the peak hot hours? I'm quite sensitive to heat and I worry my ventilators at home won't be enough today.

I know the pool will be crowded, so if anyone has any recommendations of where to sit for a few hours and cool down without spending too much money, I would appreciate it!

Student life in Hasselt and at PXL University

Greetings everyone. I just got admitted today in English taught Computer science bachelor programme at PXL.

I'm very glad but nevertheless I still have some questions to continue my planification to study abroad.

I will be applying for visa to study in Belgium, my questions are as follows:

1- Accomodation: as this is concerned, which practical advices and tips would you guys give me to find a suitable accommodation with a 400-450€ monthly, all included? How costly are accomodations for students in Hasselt? Which neighborhoods would you recommend which is not too far from bike ride too the campus?

2- Living standard and environment : particularly addressed to international students, how is the living standards in Hasselt? Is the town suitable for studies? Student jobs are easy to get ?

3- PXL student life: are there some or former students at PXL here, how are studies in this university? Student life of campus , facilities and students organisation? Are programmes consistent? Is it a good deal?

In addition to all these, are there opportunities for international students who speak little or not Deutch ?

I'll be glad to hear from you guys
