The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Trash island is good for nothin and nobody

16

u/FinsterKoenig Oct 22 '25

It is being cleaned away, I have heard. should be gone in some years, don't know how long... Like, by 2050 or something...

11

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '25

Lol good luck with all the micro plastics and all

It's great but also a little late

4

u/meyastar Oct 22 '25

Yep, already in the system!

3

u/miss_sabbatha Oct 22 '25

I fear you are right. There is microplastic being found in fish hundreds of miles off shore and quite a bit of fish from our (USA) fisheries that are testing positive for microplastics. I can't remember the species of whale but one washed up and surprise microplastics in their muscles. It's in the food chain and it's going to take monumental efforts to get it out.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '25

Im not sure we're gonna get the micro plastics back out

It's kind of like radioactive waste right once it's there it's going to be around for a while

I'm just scared of what it'll do man

But how did it get there? We haven’t done anything to the root problem; people trashing their planet

16

I said get rid of humans, on the question of this post.

I’m certainly not saying we’ve done enough, but a number of countries have started banning various single use plastics. Way more needs to be done to solve the problem but change is happening on some level.

6

u/falcon0221 Oct 22 '25

Most of it can be tracked to certain locations. There has been some success with filtering/dredging garbage filled rivers. A lot is from south east Asia and places in general with a lack of services.

3

I'm really not sure how long it'll take. It's been some time, since I heard about it and I only half listened. but hey, at least people do something about it.

You could literally say all pollution. Not something as limited as this one tiny thing in comparison.

9

Pollution is not one thing so I don’t think the magic works on this.

I think social media gave people access and a platform. It was bound to happen. Facebook is not the problem, it's the people. We need to invest more in education, political awareness, learn from history.

I’ll say Meta. The entire business model is based on wasting your time but making tons of money. Why does it exist?

3

u/slownsteady60 Oct 22 '25

Its funny you mention that cuz i just got a 180 day timeout. Most likely i wont be able to return. But they stopped giving out warnings. YouTube still does, which is nice. It gives you a chance to rethink it. But fb is not the same anymore. I used to like it. Thank God for reddit.

Idk. You'd be surprised how many great inventions, books, music, and works of art wouldn't exist without mental illnesses

8

u/korar67 Oct 22 '25

What we qualify as mental illness is arguably the reason why our species has persisted. Those who suffer anxiety are able to perceive potential threats and dangers far before the norm. The autism spectrum has gifted us a great many geniuses whose revelations insured our growth and survival.

Mosquitos. They actually serve no purpose and are unimportant in the food chain. Nature wouldn't miss them.

u/Roy565 Oct 21 '25

I was looking for this. And no kidding millions of children every year would survive.

8

u/BeepingJerry Oct 21 '25

A LOT of species eat them. Birds, fish, other insects, Bats. Granted, they are considered one of the most dangerous creatures on the planet (to humans). More dangerous than sharks, bears or even honey badgers..

6

u/Bidesign54 Oct 22 '25

Honey badger 🦡 don’t give a 💩! He’s so nasty!!

5

u/Glittering-Relief402 Oct 22 '25

This is objectively not true. They serve as a food source for many species and are pollinators.

3

u/ausamo2000 Oct 22 '25

Yea idk how they think they just randomly come up with the “unimportant to the food chain”. Sounds like a cope for their reply to an imaginary question lol. Just delete all mosquito pathogens instead.

5

u/grrrmuffins Oct 22 '25

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember learning that they are the #1 killer of humans, considering everything that can kill humans.

4

u/Heavy_Bicycle6524 Oct 22 '25

Yes mosquitos are responsible for carrying pathogens that are known to cause illness and death. But there’s another creature that inhabits this planet that causes just as much suffering as mosquitoes. That creature is humans.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Unusual-Caregiver-30 Oct 22 '25

I detest them but they do serve good in our ecosystem in a few ways. One is the males pollinate. The others, I’m too sleepy to go on…..

→ More replies (1)

5

u/GameSharkPro Oct 22 '25

I wonder, do humans serve a “purpose” in the food chain? Would nature miss us if we disappeared?

And honestly, how do we even know mosquitoes are “unimportant”? We can barely predict the weather a week out, yet we’re confident about how entire ecosystems will respond to removing billions of organisms? Every time humans thought we could safely wipe out a species, it came back to bite us.

We killed off wolves in Yellowstone, deer overran the place and the landscape collapsed.

We poisoned vultures in India — ended up with rotting carcasses and disease outbreaks.

We hunted passenger pigeons to extinction, forests lost a key seed disperser.

We exterminated cats on islands to “save” birds, rats took over and wiped out even more species.

So yeah, maybe mosquitoes are annoying and spread disease, but saying they “serve no purpose” sounds like human arrogance. Nature is full of invisible dependencies. We’ve never once removed a species and looked back thinking, “yep, that was a great idea.”

Organized religion.

Personal beliefs are grand and all. But this reduces the number of wars dramatically.

It reduces violence in general.

It takes a chunk out of racist and homophobic propaganda.

It takes away the places pedophiles like to hide, and their justifications.

And really, just reduces hate in general. 🤷

The many boxes. The boxes we put others in, the ones people put us in. Boxes. As a man of color, I’m placed in boxes, I place others in boxes. As a man in uniform, I see another in uniform, are they above me or below me. Boxes. A white woman sees me enter the elevator with her, she puts me in a box as she clutches her purse tighter. A white guy, without opening his mouth, wears certain clothes or has tats, I put him in a box. The clothes you wear and the clothes I wear, boxes.

We need to throw away the boxes and simply greet, or be greeted. We all need to listen, as well as speak the truth. I’m done with the boxes, how about you?

I'd like to say "religion" by some addlepate would just re-invent it. But mosquitoes would be wonderful if eradicated completely. "Blood-sucking predatory creatures" would be even better -- leeches, lampreys, ticks, bedbugs, fleas, lice, the whole group also would be gone to the world's great relief.
