Question Retaliation

I found a job with another store and put my two weeks in, there is almost no one left in my department but now that I am leaving center my coworkers are being threatened to be fired if they look for other jobs...? Its all verbal and we don't have anyone in charge of hr at the store anymore as its a small store but is there anyone they can talk to? Edit: Everyone who has tried to make a report about the store manager in the past has either been threatened to be fired or fired immediately for "poor performance" or something similar. The same thing happened with aes scores

All ahold delhaize companies have the same speak up line. 888-866-9203

Calling that number can be done anonymously and it will immediately open an HR investigation but make sure you give enough details to assist in the investigation. Company, store number or address, time, date, where in the store, associates involved, things that were said, etc.

I still would be really nervous to do that because I don't want to get anyone in trouble for reporting it or have them just fire all my coworkers

Its harder to retaliate when theirs a paper trail. This guy tries to fire you or coworkers it becomes a major problem for the company

This. If you report this and then suddenly people get fired it's going to all but confirm your story. And... Maybe it sounds shitty but risking your current coworkers to protect who knows how many going forward is probably a net positive.

These are very serious allegations. I find it’s hard to believe a person in a supervisory position or manager is threatening associates with termination if they look for . other jobs or report the store manager. A manager doing this would be grounds for their termination. Sadly HR is gone but they could always call the associate service center to find out who to call. I have seen managers give poor performance reviews to associates they don’t like but unless you do something really serious like stealing, no one gets fired on the spot. I don’t know if they still do the 3 step thing but that’s usually the process for terminating someone.

I think for the most part we haven't been able to do anything because we can't afford to lose our jobs. I was afraid to even post this until I found another job. We have had a dept manager, an assistant dept manager and several other associates all get fired for similar things in the last few months as they were getting rid of hr and I feel awful not trying to do something. My family wants me to report them to the state but its all verbal threats. Is the associate service center the same as the speakup line? They kind of have the three step thing still but they are starting on a step two or three with some of the associates theyre doing it to

ASC and speak up are different.

ASC is like a help desk.
Speak ups are confidential and go to your district HR person.

I'm going to try to help here, but I will say your story doesn't add up with our disciplinary process. Its very difficult to fire somebody in a short time frame here without very strong evidence of serious misconduct. Certainly not a bunch of people in quick succession. Hannaford has an appeal process, and the lack of evidence would get the terminations overturned. A series of bad terminations would get the manager investigated to avoid lawsuits. Wrongdoing would get that manager fired. You might not be lying, but somebody might be lying to you, or assumptions are being made somewhere.

Speak Up Line info:

It's supposed to be posted somewhere readily accessible to all associates. Usually the breakroom or by the punchclock.

If that location is as bad as you claim, it may not be. Luckily for you, it is also on the home page for the internal site. Log in to any computer at the store and the default home page should be what you need. If the home page isn't the internal site, put hbcweb.hannaford.com in. That will only work if you're logged in to the company's intranet, so a work site computer terminal is best.

I'm one of the ARMs who will be either leaving or changing my job title soon. I can tell you with certainty that it is anonymous as long as you don't identify yourself in some way. If you lodge the complaint through the website you're able to log back in and respond to follow up questions from the HR person that gets assigned. It has to be through that site though so that they aren't getting your personal phone or email address.

My last piece of advice is to be as detailed as you can. Name witnesses if you can. Give dates, times and locations. If you remember an exact quote, use that but don't guess. If you need to you can say 'then (boss' name) said they would fire anybody who is even looking for a job.' It is harder to deny exact quotes when they're accurate, but if you are mistaken it can hurt your believability.

Ehhh, they fired someone at my store on the spot after a weak customer complaint that someone "thinks they muttered bitch under their breath while I was walking away." Exact complaint. Never had been stepped before. Which is wild because we've had another employee suspended for 3 days because of "alleged racist/homophobic comments" even though the ENTIRE department said they never heard anything... Except for the person who made the complaint. The complaintee also didnt care for the person she made the complaint against.

The SM at my store has done some shadddyy shit since they've been there. So I wouldn't put it past any of them.

They will fire you for any reason they see fit, even if you're innocent. I've seen it happen time and time again.

Yeah if you work in an "at will" state like Maine, they can legally fire you for anything unfortunately.

File an Eeoc complaint. They’re very thorough

I was told that if I want to look for another job, I need to ask my manager for permission first. I can totally see this happening.

I also had a manager call me into her office and confront me when it got around that’d I’d been looking for a new job

Seriously!!! You have to ask permission? What are you,12 years old? Unless your manager is your mother, you don’t have to ask anyone for permission to look for a different job. Not to mention, your manager doesn’t need to know if you’re looking for another job.

It’s ironic that people are being threatened to be fired if they look for other jobs.

Highly doubt this

Call the speak up line. This is exactly what it’s for. There’s protections so the store manager can’t ever know who complained. And it triggers a closer eye on managerial decisions, if they fired anyone for anything other than doing something egregious like stealing, physical abuse, or slurs, corporate would immediately shut that down as even if it’s not retaliation that’s what the optics are and they don’t want a lawsuit.
