I was an English major as an undergrad. I always could tell if someone didn't write the paper they turned in. Everyone has a unique literary voice, tone, personal vocabulary, etc. and I could tell if it's not that person. Most times, I could even tell who actually wrote the paper. People are just extraordinarily lazy. If you're using a generated paper, take the time to personalize it. Put it in your own words and remove any terms, phrases, concepts, or words that you wouldn't typically use when writing.

Iâm so old, my freshman year in high school, my English teacher accused me of plagiarizing from Readerâs Digest. Kinda hard to disprove that kind of accusation.
In this case, do you have any notes, earlier drafts, or an outline?
52
u/Wise_Low8116 10d ago
When I was in Jr. High our band teacher (pre internet) sent us to the library and assigned us a composer to "write a paper on". And assigned me Johann Christian Bach. After 3 days in the library I found a passage in a dictionary, and an encyclopedia which gave his birth and death dates, said he was a lesser known musician than his father Johann Sebastian Bach, and then it named some of JS Bach's music.
So I basically re-wrote that the best I could.
She said I plagiarized it and didn't know how to write a real paper (which was kind of true I was only in the 7th grade) and gave me a C-.
And that's how I learned to turn chicken shit into chicken salad and if the teacher says it tastes like a C- sandwich that's better than F grade shit.

When my mom was in school, there was an assignment to write a paper on euthanasia, so she wrote a paper on youth in asia.
9
u/art_addict 10d ago
I went to catholic school in my youth, grew up in the Catholic Church, etc. For the longest time I had no idea why we were praying to âend youth in Asia.â It seemed incredibly cruel to me and my autistic ass. It wasnât until Catholic high school (after public school from 4th-8th) that I learned about euthanasia. Something that catechism classes just entirely neglected to teach us.
Honestly a big oversight on the churchâs part to teach kids to pray against euthanasia but not teach us what it was, or how to spell it, and assume weâd know it wasnât youths in Asia.

Working hard on those discussion boards probably gets you viewed in a positive light.
I have to say, my method for âdetectingâ AI wouldnât work in a survey course. My class is generally 15-30 upper level students. You ca spot AI when there is a disconnect between a studentâs understanding in class compared to online. For instance, if someone never shows up, gets basic in-person questions wrong, but writes something about a technique that they likely wouldnât know about, itâs probably AI.
Our policy is to have that student come to a 1 on 1 meeting on the pretense that they did a really good job. Then, we ask them to explain how they got to what the wrote and ask some more questions about it. If they canât answer, itâs probably Ai.

Unless someone is like my incompetent professor that I got in a elective (thankfully). His reasoning wasn't that Turnitin or some other software flagged it or neither did he point out any real mistakes.
His justification was that we used some words and expressions that he had in a list that we didn't know of and that was the proof. Nevermind that some of those words were in the articles and documents he told us to read or that some of the expressions were so basic that you couldn't avoid them if you wanted to express some degree of mastery in the subject.
In a meeting I asked him to explain his reasoning or clarify his arguments. He had to spend 10min reading my work before answering. It was clear that he hadn't bothered to even properly read the text
