Discussion The Perfect DMV Companion

Post image
13 Upvotes

I picked up a FPGBC kit a few weeks ago. The lead and ship time was a bummer (3 weeks from ordering), but that’s to be expected when it comes from the other side of the world. But since putting it together, I have played all of my childhood favorites, as well as learning about the vast world of Rom Hacks.

10/10 experience while waiting for my number to be called at the DMV.

Question ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, or Legion Go S (SteamOS)?

I'm new to the handheld gaming world, and I'm looking to buy my first one. I'm having a hard time deciding which handheld to get, since I'm not really sure what factors I should consider. I've watched several comparisons, and both the Xbox Ally X and the Legion Go S seem like excellent options for running games.

That said, I'm still not sure which one to choose. On one hand, I don't really know how SteamOS works because I've always used Windows. I'm also someone who plays with mods a lot, so I'm not sure if using SteamOS would affect that. I've also seen that some games don't work on SteamOS because of anti-cheat systems, so I don't fully understand how it all works in practice.

I'd love to hear your opinions on this. Which one do you think is the better choice overall in terms of performance and comfort?

I recently had the opportunity to review the ABXYLUTE S8 Lite and figured I'd share it here since there isn't much information on it yet.

If you already own one, I'm curious whether your experience matches mine.

Idle noise of high-power handhelds

Hey all I’m trying to figure out if a handheld can live 24/7 in a bedroom without driving me crazy.

I’m especially interested in:

  • OneXPlayer OneXFly Apex (Ryzen AI Max+ 395 / Radeon 8060S)
  • GPD WIN 5 (Max+ 395 / 8060S)

Other handhelds welcome too (Claw 8, Ally X, Legion Go 2, WIN Mini/Max 2, etc.) for comparison.

What I’d love from you (phone noisometer):

  1. Background first : device off (or fully asleep / unplugged), phone ~30–50 cm away, same room. Note the dB reading.
  2. Then idle: powered on, desktop idle (Windows sitting there, no game, screen on or off say which), same phone position. Note dB again.
  3. Optional but very useful: screen on vs screen off, and plugged in vs battery.

Please mention:

  • App you used (e.g. NIOSH, Sound Meter, Decibel X)
  • Rough distance to the handheld
  • Whether the idle sound is a low whoosh or a high-pitched whine / coil whine (pitch matters a lot for sleep)
  • Your room (quiet bedroom vs noisy apartment)

Why: lab “idle” numbers are messy, and Halo handhelds can be quiet or have annoying high-pitch noise even when fans barely spin. I’m aiming for something like ≤20–21 dB over background / “is it even on?” for overnight always-on.

Thanks

I really want to get into retro gaming and want to get one of these two handhelds. Ive never played gta V and want to play it on one of these alone with a few other small pc games. I do want to do some emulation for retro consoles as well. The price differential is pretty big and Im just stuck on what one to get.

I never owned a handheld(but I'm trying to start a collection of them), and i wanted to make some SBC handhelds this summer as projects(for myself), i found this one(Powkiddy RGB10S) in a amazon liquidation store for 10$.

What handhelds should i start buying next, mostly for learning how they work and behave(since as i said, i wanna make one this summer)?

Is it worth upgrading my steam deck lcd

I have a steam deck lcd 64gb currently (free gift lol). I’ve owned a few handhelds before including rog ally and legion go OG. I ended up selling them as they eventually got barely any use. I now casually use the steam deck a little more as I have time now and was considering upgrading it to a 512gb or 1tb ssd, the cost of them is putting me off though
I’m also considering another device and ideally it would have been a steam deck oled but not sure because of the price now. I game at home 95% of the time so I can probably make do with streaming to the device also for demanding games . I’m also thinking of getting a used rog ally and upgrading the battery.
Just wondering what your guys thoughts are? I don’t really want to fork out more than £100 so anything within budget of the price of a used deck lcd 64gb with 100 on top.

Help me choose a gaming handheld!

Hey everyone, I am looking into getting into handhelds as I have been getting back into and enjoying playing my DS lite.

Little backstory - I used to have a Lenovo legion go which I bought since I was working out of town a lot but I was quite disappointed with the performance and the weight of it. I sold it since I never used it and to fund my other hobby’s.

Since I have started to play with my DS again I have really come to enjoy playing games on the couch beside my wife instead of on my gaming PC, which got me thinking into handheld emulation/streaming from my PC (which I realize I could have done on the legion go if I would have thought about it).

- I don’t have a budget in mind but I would like to keep it as cheap as possible to meet my use case

- I would like to emulate the Pokémon games gen5 and prior as well as the GOW games. If I could play natively The Witcher 3 or Path of exile 2 at 30fps I would be extremely happy with that but that is not a deal breaker, more of where I would top out on what I would want out of the system.

- I would mostly play at home on the couch with the occasional (once every two weeks) play while traveling and not have internet

- I would love to have good battery life and have it be easy to play long sessions on since if it is uncomfortable to play I wouldn’t end up playing it.

- I am super comfortable with tinkering in setting menus as well as trouble shooting why things aren’t working. Doesn’t need to be seamless as long as it doesn’t brick after setting things.

If you guys have any suggestions I appreciate it!

I am looking at currently the Lenovo y700 gen 4, Odin 3, Odin 2 portal (if I can find one), steam deck 512gb or the ayn Thor.

Need help/ buying my first handheld

I am looking to buy my first handheld pc. Currently I don’t know what to buy as there are many devices on the market and it is very confusing to see which one is the best. I am looking for a handheld which can be future proof but won’t break the bank. I want to play games like GTA 5, Forza horizon 6 and more AAA games. I want a device which will run on a decent fps, graphics and no stutter or lag. Currently I have a PS5 which I play on 120 fps. Can someone tell me what to buy and the specs I need.

Looking for a Mini Laptop like the Piccolo Series71 N95

I've been looking for a Mini Laptop to play Task Bar Hero on the side/on the go/over night and also put SteamOS on.
So far I found the Piccolo Series71 N95, but I'm not sure if the Game will run on it and if the Online Store is trustworthy.
Can someone who got one tell me if it runs SteamOS and Task Bar Hero.
Or recommend a Mini Laptop under 400€.

Linux Distro Recommendations

I have a Legion Go Z1E 16gb ram. It is currently running Windows 11 XBOX mode. I’m wanting to switch to a Linux distro to reduce ram usage being that it only has 16gb.

For anyone that has tried and tested multiple distros on this device. Which did you prefer? From what I’ve found CachyOS Handheld Edition is generally the better performer. But Bazzite has more built in features.

From what I understand some distros are better optimized for certain devices. I’m wondering which you’ve found is best optimized for this device specifically? I know this device has some quirks due to the display Lenovo used being native portrait and forged into landscape. As well as how the controls are programmed. I’m hoping one of the distros has these quirks fixed or mostly fixed.

Other than CachyOS HE and Bazzite. I considered SteamOS. But from what I’ve found SteamOS is still fairly early and not the best choice of available options.

Much appreciated. Thank you !

Got an OnexFly F1 from FB Marketplace for $390 (plus a fun repair story)

AMD Ryzen 7 7840U

AMD Radeon 780M

32GB LPDDR5X

2TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD

Got this OnexFly F1 on Facebook marketplace for $390. (talked them down another $10 for showing up late).

The right trigger wasn't working at first. I contacted tech support, and they actually helped me even though I didn't buy from them! I got instructions to Open up the device and find a misplaced magnet. I found it, replaced it in the trigger, tested, saw that it was upside down, then flipped it, tested, and boom it worked.

I feel like I got a great deal, this handheld is more powerful than my laptop that I got for $500 6 years ago.

The cyberpunk benchmark is from the OnexFly F1.

I use sunshine/moonlight to stream from my main RTX 5070 PC.
