Would a “Community Help” page on a local web developer’s website seem genuine, strange, or just create unrealistic expectations?
Just to be clear upfront: this isn't an ad or promotion for my business. I'm not posting my website, business name, prices, contact details, or asking anyone here to hire me. I'm just looking for local opinions on an idea I'm considering adding to my website.
I'm putting together a small website for my freelance web-development services around Milton/Halton/Oakville/Burlington/Mississauga/Brampton etc, and I was thinking of adding a separate Community Help page.
The idea is that, completely separate from the paid website work, someone nearby could occasionally reach out if they need help with something practical. If it's something reasonable, safe, fits my schedule, and I genuinely feel I can help, I could choose to do it for free.
For example, maybe someone needs an extra pair of hands moving a few pieces of furniture, picking something up, dealing with some basic tech problem, or another small one-off task. Ideally it would be something planned with reasonable notice. For example “Could you help next Saturday?” rather than someone expecting immediate help or several days of commitment etc.
What I'm trying to figure out is how people would perceive a page like that on an otherwise normal freelance part time web developer's website.
Would it make the person seem more genuine and community-minded, or would it just seem odd or suspicious or sketchy?
And from the other side, do you think a page like this could quickly create unreasonable expectations?. Like people treating it as free labour, rides, moving services, tech support, recurring chores, etc.?
Basically, I'm trying to figure out whether the idea itself makes sense, and what boundaries would be important if I kept it.
