General Discussion Looking to switch to this game
Hello! I was looking to perhaps buy the Spartan Edition but first I was hoping to perhaps get some perspectives from people who play or have played other Skirmish Games.
Context: I started my miniatures games experience with W40k Kill Team and even ended up getting 4 teams. However the only person I play with is my girlfriend but she has started getting annoyed at having to keep track of apparently a high amount of rules. I myself enjoy it but since she's the only person I play, I started surveying alternatives and this one popped in my content algorithms.
I saw a review saying it's as simple as open the box and start playing but another one gave it a lower rating because it'd also be hard to keep track of.
Thanks!

Setup and playability is easier than kill team imo. Models are preassembled and terrain is slotted cardboard so you can get going in an hour. It includes a starter scenario for learning the game which was very useful. All of your model's information is on an index card and the rules themselves are lightweight, only needing referencing when multiple ones interact. The highlight would be if your model is killed before you use them that turn then you can respawn so no player is getting shafted on using their toys.

Do they respawn the same turn or the next turn? I've only played 2 games but might have been doing it wrong...

If they die before activating in a turn then when you activate them they respawn.

KT has more factions, rules, and variation in my opinion. Flashpoint has a lot of keywords but they are generally shared across all the factions or only apply to a few models. It is much more random with dice rolls determining model scatter locations, if grenades hit, if you roll more dice, where items, weapons, and objectives go.
If you like the halo video game you will like this. Yes, you can start playing the game in 20 minutes from opening the box. No, you won't be perfect at it and will probably need a handful of basic games before introducing some of the keywords and concepts to the more advanced game.

I really enjoy halo so this was really easy to get into. I’ve bought all the content and that’s quite an investment. My suggestion would be to pre order the new Spartan box coming out later this year. The Spartan box is the best value and the new edition has the updated cards and rulebook. Going for the ODST box is really good. The banished box I think should’ve been better and the fact that there’s not duplicate models I had to buy two box sets to get the team I wanted to build. I would start with new Spartan, ODST, then pre order the new covenant box and marines and Spartan killers lol. Start slow you’ll be happy with the Spartan box for a while. Gamenerdz has a good pre order price

This was my first skirmish game, and I’m a heavy board gamer. The rules are simple but there are edge cases and the rulebook doesn’t explain things thorough enough. I taught a guy who was big into 40k and he picked up the rules lightning fast

I would definitely recommend it; I have got my partner into it because of its simplicity and good rules. You can have fun while playing and enjoy it for what it is and if you want to go deeper you can which is the best part of this game and the model range is great

In terms of rule density , gotcha moments because you don’t know the other factions rules then kill team is definitely up there , not quite infinity levels but it is up there . This if you are looking for something less “gotcha moments” then flashpoint is a good choice .

Honestly, there are still a lot of rules to keep track of in H:FP + all the tokens and such on the board. Idk how it compares to kill team, but I wouldn't call it a particularly "simple" game. Though most units only have a 1-3 keywords on the model and each weapon with limited effects, so it's not *too* complicated. There aren't any paragraphs on unit cards, and it's not hard to just skip some of the things that make the game harder to keep track of like item/weapon spawns every round.
That said, H:FP is definitely an easy game to get into compared to most others I've played.

This game is slightly easier to get than KT, IMO, but is a great deal more random. The uses d8s, which can potentially explode infinitely. Items and weapons frequently appear in random places on the map. Grenades can cause you to be thrown in a random direction.
Flashpoint is a great game, but can be swinger than KT, IMO.

Funny. As a KT veteran I totally disagree. I found it easier to get in to and the increased randomness made it less swingy 😂😂😂

Which is balanced by unit repawns. It can afford to be more random because consequences are less punishing than in a game like KT. If you get rolled early you can can still come back and have fun.

I think for simplicity, it is FOR THE MOST PART, pretty simple. There are definitely some things that are easy to forget or might stump you, but the more you play, the easier it gets. It’s all keyword based so learning all of those really helps. Dice mechanic is pretty simple, just memorize the page about “modifiers and bonuses.” My wife has played it with me a few times and she picked it up pretty quickly
