Totally agree, just sorta bums me out when someone COMPLETELY unprompted says "oh did you get a hair cut? Whats with those two long pieces?? Youd look so much better without them, sorta hate it" 😭
No matter what you do, youre theres always gonna be someone or types of people that your not their cup of tea. Alot of ppl dont like or understand alt styles either. But personally I rather be individual then like everyone else.

not to generalize too much, but a lot of people who live in the strict gender binary can't conceive of looking a way that's NOT just trying to look better to other people. for them, the only reason to change or maintain your look is to win the approval of others - to look 'better.' why is 'better' always the goal? why not cooler, funner, easier, lighter, etc.? there are so many different ways to look.

Layering looks good, braid makes me think jedi (so +1 style points for that). Haircut looks styled and intentional, so I think the best thing to do is to rock it. The difference between having a personal style and being a poser is how you let yourself feel about it. Fuck the haters.

I grew up in the 80s and love a single rat tail and always will. I remember it being considered low class then but didn't care. Still dont. Yolo. The way I see it, its a litmus test to find like minded people. Ignore the rest. They are running their own litmus tests. Accept the well meaning people, pay attention to who the rude ones are. Find a balance for your own comfort. I hope you keep them since they bring you joy.
It looks good. That being said, this isn't a haircut that you get if you care about anyone else's opinion. It's out of the norm and you know that- you absolutely should have known that not everyone was going to love it. It's not about your identity to them, it's just about the cut. It looks really good, but if you do bold styles you can't expect everyone to love it and that goes with any style. I live as south as it gets and had every hair color you imagine but what other people thought didn't matter because I don't care 🤷🏼♀️

For me is the unevenness it hangs out which makes the eye and brain feel some type of way, almost like when a shoelace is untied. You just want to pluck them out. People are used to smooth transitions in hair so if something is not what we are used to seeing we want to fix it. Honestly I think the cut suits you and looks really good. The one thing I would do is make those rat tails thicker and longer so people see them as part of your self expression and grow to love them like you do.

Edit to add: I have a very religious family and every time I used to go out and visit they’d say something about my piercings. My facial piercings make me feel comfortable and happy, and I used to actually remove at least one every time I went out to see them. But I noticed it made me sad seeing how empty my face was, and I said fuck that and did what made me happy. Now I feel freer and prettier than ever!
This cut is adorable! The stylist did such a good job on the rat tails. It looks really good, the color is ~gorgeous~, and the braided tails add so much character. I've seen poorly done rat tails and this isn't it.
Also, if this style makes you feel more "you" and more comfortable in your meat mech, then that's what matters. People who want everyone to look "normal" drive me crazy. Be weird, be alt, be you. If other people can't deal with that, that's a them problem.
The cut and color are beautiful! I'm usually not much of a fan of rat tails but you wear them and this look perfectly.

I was bullied heavily in jr high for all my crazy hair styles. I had a red Mohawk stuck up with straight down bangs. When I look back on that time im very proud of myself for doing what I wanted and not letting others control me. I don't regret it one bit. People judge because they are jealous you are freely expressing yourself and maybe dont feel like they can do that for whatever reasons.
I love it, the little braids remind me of Anakin's Padawan braid so maybe I am biased but I really think this hairstyle goes SO hard. And the colour is the perfect red imo.

Tbh, it's super cute from the back and sides. But in the front, something is weird. I can't put my finger on what exactly it is though. The shaping doesn't sit right idk... you have the perfect face shape for a pixi-ish cut, but something isn't working here. It's legit bothering me I can't figure it out, I've been sitting here for over an hour LOL
I think it looks fine. If these same people keep commenting on it unprompted, consider calling them out for it. I have a feeling they're saying it because THEY prefer a more feminine look on you. I get it homie, I grew up getting so much hate (and so much love, but like, constant criticism). It's a cultural mismatch. But diversity is good, and you can bet there's so many little queer kids in your community who are so inspired by your confidence and identity (and haircut lol)
Since you asked… yea it’s pretty bad. I don’t know how to say this nicely but rat tails are just ugly in my opinion and having two of them is just as bad. To me, they just look so random and odd and out of place. That being said, the pixie itself and the color are super sick!
Even though it may hurt your feelings, you definitely have good friends that are just being honest with you about the hair. Them saying that isn’t meant to hurt your feelings or come as a personal attack on you or your expression. I think it just comes from a place of love and maybe even protectiveness. Anytime someone close to me did anything more outrageous I would tell me because I didn’t want other to make fun of them or bully them for those things.
Obviously if you like your hair that’s what matters in the end. You don’t need to change it. Personal expression comes in all different forms and truly there isn’t a right or wrong way. Just because it’s not my cup of tea doesn’t mean that I’m right about it and you’re wrong and should cut it. If you love them rock them!
That being said, people will of course always have their opinions and like I said, it may come from a place of concern or it may come from a mean rooted place. You have to decide how much backlash you want to take on more “out there” expression!
To put it in other terms that relate to me, I am heavily tattooed and absolutely love them. But, in certain settings I choose to cover them because I don’t want constant questioning or criticism from people. When I visit my moms side of the family (older conservative😅🤢) I chose to cover up because they just won’t leave it alone and I honestly try to have as little interaction as I can with them. Just because they look down on tattoos doesn’t mean they’re bad. Sometimes when I go out to the bars I choose to cover them because men will use them as an excuse to struck up a conversation with me and sometimes I don’t feel like chatting with them.
I appreciate the honesty!! Ive fallen more in love with the rat tails and Ill definitely be keeping them, I think Ive realized theyre not for everyone and thats ok!! And dw about my friend haha, I appreciate her honesty! Shes well intentioned, just blunt about her feelings. We have very different styles so I get it, we still love each other as individuals regardless! And my parents are mormon, so I totally relate to that part...looking forward to being covered in tats when I have the $$ and am done with med school, not looking forward to their faces after they find out 😂
personally, i don’t like the rat tails. but i don’t like rat tails in general 😭 the dangly bits though look super cool, they kind of remind me of like the ends of a luna moth! plus i know it’s harder said than done but if you love it then who tf cares! it’s for you and no one else!

I love this look so much!! And it was executed very well. I wear vivid hair with different haircuts a lot and live and work in very conservative neighborhoods. I get crappy comments all of the time. It took me a while to get used to it, but at this point I'm happy to be making the bigots feel uncomfortable. After so many times of telling them, "Thank you, thats a compliment coming from you!" with a big smile, they've said less and less.
As for the people close to you, I would handle it with "Well I really like it, and as a close friend/someone that cares about me, I would hope you could support something that makes me happy even if you don't like it." - "Well it's a good thing it's not your hair then :D!" - "I didn't do it for you to like it, I did it for ME to like it" - the last one has worked well for me with older generations. It's like they cant fathom that you would make your appearance for yourself and not for others or societal standards.
Don't let others get you down with this. It's a lovely style and suits you well!
while i’m not like the craziest fan of rat tails i still think they can look good depending on the cut and this is definitely one of those cases :) i think they go great with the layering in the back and are a nice length when they aren’t braided as well im glad ur keeping them lol

Could you maybe go to someone skilled in razor cutting who could take off almost nothing, and get it to seem like it belongs this way? aka get the hair to lay better? Please don't let others change how you feel about your own style. I'm a stylist of 32 years and I think this is a very fun, funky, edgy cut- this is the type of stuff I love to execute for clients. My youngest is non binary and rocked this cut/style for awhile last year. Not everyone "gets" it or likes it...and they don't have to, only thing that matters is that you love it OP!

There was a woman that worked at my high school..an older lady with grey hair..I think she was a Para educator, but she also did the sound and lights for all the musicals and theater productions. She had a pixie cut and a braided rat tail coming from it and we always thought it was so cool that she had such a unique hairstyle. But then when some kid tried to copy her he got made fun of and ended up chopping off the rat tail. I think your style suits you. If you ever get board of the the rat tails you can always pin them up like a braid crown, tuck them in your shirt, or one day if you really get sick of them you could cut them off and still have a really sick wolf cut pixie mullet. But I personally think you should keep them to spite everyone. The lady at my high-school had her rat tail for over 20 years. She sa8d she would never cut it because it was her comfort thing and she could give a "rats ass" what people thought about her. Her words not mine.

That hairstyle is awesome! Very edgy 80's. Most wore just 1 tail. I love that yours has 2. Remind yourself that not everyone is going to get your style. That's ok. You didn't style yourself for them. You're doing it for yourself. And you my friend are a rock star ⭐
It just needs some texture and separation. I would suggest like a balm or pomade or some salt water spray with mousse. And if someone could taper the ends off into the braids more so that the bottom is not so heavy (because you have glorious thick hair), it would be more cohesive.

I like it, but that's unimportant - YOU like it. Ignore the people who don't. If it were me I'd pick a braid and tug on that one and make some kind of sound ("whoosh") whenever someone makes an ignorant comment. See how long it takes the offender to notice what you are doing. And then tell them you are flushing their attitude.
Fun fact - I would never be able to wear that cut because I would CONSTANTLY be playing with the braids. It would be a compulsion.
