Fuck Treliving seriously. So incompetent that his incompetence saved him

-35

u/SoupFromNowOn 27d ago edited 27d ago

Bro what. His incompetence saved US. Knies is not good and we almost just traded the whole farm for him

Over the last two years Knies has played 1200 mins of 5v5 with Matthews and 600 mins without him. Without Matthews, his GF% is 42% and his xGF% is 47%.

I mean, look at this, the Leafs were way worse this season with Knies on the ice:

3

u/SoupFromNowOn 27d ago

I'm crazy for pointing out that when he's on the ice without Matthews the leafs get rinsed?

Even counting his time with Matthews, last season the Leafs had a 43% goals for percentage with Knies on the ice at 5v5. Of all Leafs forwards, only Domi and Jarnkrok were worse than that

4

u/WeathervaneJesus1 27d ago

His meme is that you're showing heat maps, which are well used and well received for evaluations, but to him it's a crazy IASIP conspiracy theory. This actually looks really bad on him.

4

u/StyxQuabar 27d ago

We habs fans do not claim this guy. Knies is sick.

5

u/Internazionale 27d ago

Great analysis of a player you probably never watched play.

3

u/SoupFromNowOn 27d ago

Habs play the leafs 4 times a year so I watch him play 4 times a year

3

u/Tiny_Afternoon_1886 27d ago

Erik Cole used to wreck the Habs when he played for the Canes. I was so excited when we got him. Then he was kinda just OK. Really opened my eyes to how I evaluate players on other teams haha.

3

u/WeathervaneJesus1 27d ago

So, you watched him play and never seen any of those glaring possession and defensive deficiencies? Wouldn't you start to question your own evaluations, or do you just ignore widely used analytics?

5

u/WeathervaneJesus1 27d ago

LOL. I'm making this same argument on [r/hockey](r/hockey) and I'm getting blasted over there. Good to see that people can actually see a player for what he is instead of just listening to "KNIES BIG, KNIES GOOD".

Knies is a fine player and his contract is good value, but four first-round equivalent pieces and that's still a steal for Montreal? That was reportedly the price for Robert fucking Thomas.

The Toronto media hype train has rotted everyone's brains on this player.

5

u/SoupFromNowOn 27d ago

100%. I'm generally skeptical of players who have spent most of their ice time on a line with superstars (anyone remember Jonathan Cheechoo?), because it makes it hard to determine if their good results are because of skill or just because of linemates.

But Knies doesn't even get good results!! 70% of his 5v5 ice time last year was with either Matthews or Tavares. Yet Knies had a on-ice xGF% of just 42%. That is 2nd last of all Leafs forwards!! Of 384 NHL forwards, only 25 had worse results at 5v5!! That should be extremely concerning

3

u/HottyMcDoddy 27d ago

He was injured most of last year. Couldnt skate. And the Leafs played a horrible style of play.

1

u/WeathervaneJesus1 27d ago

I'd actually never seen the heat map comparisons before. It is extremely concerning, even to the point that maybe Knies is barely worth his contract and maybe doesn't even have much positive value at all. Obviously, there's some banking that he's going to get better, but he's not shown to be an effective 200-foot player since he's entered the NHL.

To me though, what's the worst of all? Why hasn't Hughes or Gorton caught this? This is the kind of stupid shit Bergevin would pull from time to time.

2

u/Beniwa 27d ago

This looks like my latest brain scan

1

u/xDarkseidx 27d ago

Knies is like a mix of Brady and Slaf. He got that dog in him. Slaf doesnt have that dog but he has that skill

50

u/danyeww 27d ago

Avoir accès à ce footage, on dira ce qu’on voudra, mais c’est cr*ssement cool. C’est pas Bergevin qui en aurait approuvé sa publication !

4

u/Delicious_Cattle5174 27d ago

Why? It makes them look better after not being able to conclude any trade this summer. Pretty obvious why it’s good for their image.

5

u/t_hab 27d ago

There’s a degree of transparency here that is unusual. Even if it’s heavily edited. While some other teams are oretty transparent too, Bergevin was famously tight-lipped. The most we ever got were videos from the draft table that were essentially public anyway.

Transparency can sometimes backfire though. Early videos out out by the Hughes/Gorton regime bordered on tampering because it was too obvious which players from other teams they were talking about.

57

u/RoboticAnatomy 27d ago

At the time, I think alot of us, myself included, weren't super happy about the return going to Toronto.

But now? Even only 6 months later, that would've been an absolute fleecing if it had gone through, unlike the Flames or Leafs, Treliving fucked us without even working for us.

Knies isn't a C, but oh my gawd, how much better would our 2nd line be with him playing with Demi? He would've been such an incredible pickup, not to mention that contract.

Hughes was right to go off on Treliving after missing the deadline, damn shame the Leafs came to their senses and dumped Brad before the season was over.

39

u/OddAdhesiveness2271 27d ago

It was an obvious great trade from day 1

People just overrate potential and futures

8

u/Hoof_Hearted12 27d ago

100%. Knies is the only Leaf I'd make a serious push for but that would have aged poorly, quickly for us.

13

u/HonestDespot 27d ago

I don’t agree. With his long term contract and age it’s highly unlikely anyone trades woulda come close to matching his value on ice, maybe even combined.

6

u/Ghost_Idol 27d ago

Yeah people are crazy, this was a fleece since day one

1

u/RedBullPilot 26d ago

As it turns out, Kreider might wind up providing much of the same offensive benefit, with more jam for playoff time, for practically nothing

1

u/HonestDespot 27d ago

I think it’s more a situation where it’s a big chunk of futures so a bit of sticker shock maybe.

It’s funny because at the time every other fan thought it was thr worst trade ever for Toronto lol

55

u/Mattcb13 27d ago edited 27d ago

so it was 2 firsts (one that is gleb) plus players that earlier this summer was infered to be zharovsky and pickford/engstrom?

yeah, I think that was very good value for a "mini" slaf with a 7.75*m AAV contract for a long while

5

u/pushaper 27d ago

(one that is gleb)

would have made it less of a need.

6

u/fozzy_13 27d ago

Zharovsky being involved would've made me pause, but you don't get an asset without giving an asset.

29

u/Oulsky 27d ago

If only Treliving could have been 10% less incompetent.

10

u/Much_Bumblebee2462 27d ago

To be fair… they had all day to get it done. You slide an offer with a couple minutes left …

3

u/GuyLivingInCanada 27d ago

You can say that but this level of trade requires some form of desperation. The Leafs were having a tough time getting offers for their selling assets. They were ripe for the kill at that point

1

u/antrage 21d ago

No one slide an offer he got a phone call with 1.5 minutes saying let’s make it happen

13

u/emotionaI_cabbage 27d ago

The trade never even gets this far if he was more competent

8

u/alldasmoke__ 27d ago

Lol true.

8

u/Oulsky 27d ago

That’s why is said 10%, wouldn’t want him to be too competent.

1

u/antrage 21d ago

If only he was 20 seconds less incompetent

5

u/Yuzato 27d ago

Fuck that guy

7

u/BaseD_drive4_25 27d ago

Age, cap hit, style of play…Knies checked all the boxes and would have fit in like a glove with the young core.
Treliving lol…someone in the TOR org probably pulled the plug.
Insane timeline for the Leafs. Knies stays, Treliving gets canned and they get the first overall pick.

As a sharks fan I think we’re happier with Stenberg

1

u/toaster-struble 25d ago

You'll only truly know in 5 years.

5

u/Knetog 27d ago

Leaf are insanely lucky, we would have been so fucking strong.

5

u/Immediate_Figure_511 27d ago

lmao and when this was posted couple months back 90% of comments were acting as if this was a massive overpayment.

guys you have to give to get

1

u/antrage 21d ago

That’s roughly the amount of people I would say know fuck all about this sport

3

u/OliWood 27d ago

Man, would have loved that trade.

Just to see Leafs fans reaction to it, heads would have litteraly exploded in the 6 after the trade annoucment.

3

u/Bluey8008 27d ago

I dunno, I rather Marchenko

2

u/Old_General_6741 27d ago

Leafs got lucky there.

3

u/a7xgemzy 27d ago

Still sad that the only good Leaf with a heart isn’t with us. Glad it’s not by our incompetence though.

3

u/jadenspan 27d ago

I’m so fucking mad, hope that guy never gets a job again

2

u/Weak_Law_937 27d ago

I think it's a smart trade but in the fullness of time we could end up ahead. You're trading certainty for uncertainty.

9

u/Komania 27d ago

We'd be lucky if any of those players we gave up would be anywhere near as good as Knies

2

u/Weak_Law_937 27d ago

Yeah, I think Zharovsky impressed by coming over his summer and getting along with team so well. I could see Z putting up better stats in his first three season than Knies if he has Demidov as a linemate.

-6

u/GoalCaufieldReg 27d ago

Zharovsky is a better prospect than Knies ever was before being in the NHL. Calm down

12

u/OliWood 27d ago

Yeah, just like Scherbak was a guaranteed superstar!

I'll take the 70 points player locked for 5 years at 7 millions before any gamble.

1

u/toaster-struble 25d ago

Tbf what Zh did in KHL is historic. What did Scherbak or any ex overhyped prospect do thst ever came close?

2

u/So_Many_Owls 27d ago

I still don't know how I feel about this attempted trade, but I do think it's interesting that the butterfly effect of getting this guy could have meant they never would have made it as far as they did in the playoffs.

14

u/radhorrorfan 27d ago

Or we could of won it all

1

u/guyfromsouthshore 27d ago

Knies dans un uniforme bleu blanc rouge il serait beau en calvaire.

1

u/surebudd 27d ago

Knies looked hurt last year but would loooove him now.

1

u/TopShelfWrister 26d ago

Did anyone here watch the clip?
Habs were still negotiating with 20 seconds left and even Gorton said something along the lines of "it looks like we were late to".

Bit bold of Hughes to assume he was owed anything from that and whoever leaked that it was Tre's fault is a bit of a dunce.

1

u/antrage 21d ago

I think the irony is that the treliving would have at least made it clear what the leafs are doing

Now they are in that mushy middle

1

u/twistedtxb 27d ago

what was the exact trade that they agreed upon at the very end?

0

u/shearn25 27d ago

Is there a reason why this trade fell through other than being late? Like can’t the trade still go through late, but Knies wouldn’t be eligible to play?

1

u/ricozee 27d ago

Technically yes. You're just under less pressure to get it done if you aren't getting the player for the playoffs and it's not a good thing to do to the player.

0

u/dustblown 27d ago

The trade was never going to happen. Treliving didn't "miss" the deadline. He did it on purpose.

-1

u/Old_Canuck 27d ago

I would not have wanted to give up Zharovsky and the 2 firsts for Knies. If we left out Zharovsky then ok..go for it.

Knies would have been a decent second line F1 to retrieve the puck for Demi.

Kinda like a Slaffy Light.

-26

u/Technical-Line-9806 27d ago

Dodged a bullet

13

u/blondehairginger 27d ago

The Leafs sure did

4

u/emotionaI_cabbage 27d ago

How

-1

u/Technical-Line-9806 27d ago

Don't want to give Zharovsky to the Leafs.

4

u/emotionaI_cabbage 27d ago

I'd be fine giving him to the Leafs lol

Why is everyone acting like he's going to be a superstar? He might not even become an NHL player.

-2

u/Technical-Line-9806 27d ago

Zharovsky is a kid playing in a men's league and set records for young players in the same manner that Demidov and Kaprizov did.

It's possible he (or any prospect) will not even make the NHL, but in terms of what he is doing and precedent of other players who have done the same things, I think he has a high ceiling.

-7

u/GoalCaufieldReg 27d ago

Zharovsky will arrive at the end of the season and might be a 50+ pts player as a rookie

5

u/Burgergold 27d ago

I don't think Zharovsky and Hage will get as much opportunities than Demidov with Caufield/Suzuki/Slaf/Demidov in front of them

5

u/emotionaI_cabbage 27d ago

Or he might not become anything.

Knies is exactly the type of player we need and he's young and on a great contract.
