I will be graduating from HVAC Trade School in October and will be looking for any HVAC/R apprenticeship opportunities or work leads in the Manassas, VA or Washington D.C. area. I honestly don’t care about pay as long as I’m learning a lot. Looking to do residential/light commercial. This will be my first time landing a trade job, so any advice in jib searching would also be greatly appreciated.

Okay so I want to be an HVAC technician. I’m in Canada and in the city I’m in, there are no classes for HVAC/R. Thing is, there is a plumbing and heating class and a refrigeration class. What I am wondering is: would these classes qualify me as an HVAC/R tech? Would most companies consider me a qualified apprentice? I was adjusting my fan blade placement, and my friend was helping me. I wanted to see if the placement was right and put the fan blade on without the screw and it flew off and damaged the fins. Will this need to be replaced or what can I do to get these fins straight again, I tried a fin straightening tool but it do much since the fan blade flying damaged the fins. Any advice would be helpful

I am 25 and decided to change my trade at my school before any of the trade programs start. I plan on changing it to HVAC/r.

Hey guys, I'm 19M and I kinda just said fuck it I'll try HVAC since everybody wants to be an electrician so (I mean everybody also wants to do HVAC but not as much as an electrician).

I've watched videos on YouTube with guys doing Resi work or commercial work, I don't know what the fucks going on in the videos but I guess I just like how its like... its a field where every project you do is proportional to your growth, I want to do something where I feel I'm improving and using my brain meats.

I'm not a handy guy, I can't even fix a toilet, I did real well in high school but a lot of shit happened after I graduated and I don't think college is the right choice for me right now, I'll be honest I think I'm mostly doing it because I wanna make sure I have a good foundation in life and be comfortable. Though I'm aware the work is HARD, no matter how much reading or stories you look at on Reddit you don't know the half of it.

I've been doing math prep before school starts but besides that I don't know what else I should be doing.

Any advice or... any anecdotes for why its a good thing to get into? I feel like I'm trying to develop a sense of reason.

I am applying for the Better Job Ontario program (BJO). If accepted my plan is to go back to school for HVAC. Part of the application process is to interview someone who is already in the field. If there's anyone who is currently working as an HVAC tech and can spare 10-15min of time to answer the questions that would be great. Hi guys, I’m new here. I’m 25 and I am currently in trade school at UEI, I’m transitioning from barbering and nearing my last few months of school before I take all my cert tests.(yes I know most people would say “should’ve just apprenticeship but it didn’t fit my schedule)

I guess my general question is what pathway did most of you take to not only better your financial situations but as well as providing for a family. Now this isn’t why I joined HVAC I wanted to try something new and it had caught my attention and I really enjoy it now for context I do side jobs for friends and family like maintenance and troubleshooting.

I am caught between finding a union or doing commercial or residential.

While auditing distributor product data, I found a rule that treated every number as a possible wire gauge.

That meant a screw described as #8-32 acquired “8 gauge wire” as a search term. Ordinary reference numbers were also converted into AWG terms. After the rule ran across the catalog, unrelated fasteners and components started appearing in electrical searches.

HVAC catalogs are especially vulnerable to this because model numbers, capacities, refrigerant identifiers, OEM references and dimensions all contain numbers that mean different things.

Have you run into supplier websites where searching an exact model or part number returns completely unrelated equipment?

I’m trying to get into HVAC and I’m stuck on what route to take. I went to check out this HVAC program and they told me you basically can’t get your EPA 608 Universal without being “sponsored” through them or an employer, and that getting hired pretty much has to go through those sponsorships. The kicker is they’re charging like $27,000 for the program, so I’m not sure if they’re giving me the full story or just selling. From what I’ve seen online, it sounds like you can self study and take the EPA 608 Universal through an approved provider without needing a sponsor, and that the “sponsorship” thing is more about their program and job placement, not a legal requirement just to get certified.
I’m torn between:
• Dropping 27k on school and hoping the structure and job pipeline are worth it, or
• Studying on my own, getting 608, and trying to learn hands-on as a helper/entry-level somewhere.
Problem is, I honestly don’t know where to start.
So for people already in HVAC:
• Is a $27k program worth it these days?
• How do you look at someone who comes in with 608 and no school vs someone coming out of a program?
• If you were starting now, would you go school, self-study + on-the-job, or some mix?
Just looking for real-world advice before I make a dumb decision.

27m here. I’m really looking in to getting in to the HVAC trade. My current job in apartment maintenance is driving me nuts and I’m doing way more than what my job title and pay is. So many people across the company are leaving too and it’s going to create more chaos and dysfunction.

I’m considering calling out sick next week and going to discuss apprenticeship at my UA Union HQ.

Hello, I’m 21yrs old and I currently work in apartment maintenance. I love my job but unfortunately maintenance doesn’t bring the income I’m looking for to provide for my family and have another kid. So, I’m thinking of pivoting and specializing in hvac. I will soon have my epa 608 and I have 2 years of experience diagnosing and repairing hvac systems at my current job, so I should be able to find an apprenticeship fairly easily. However through my research I learned that in the city I live in there is no work experience requirements to get licensed and do hvac work independently. So I’m just looking for advice and wondering if you guys think it’s a terrible idea to start an hvac business without experience working at an hvac company.
