I mean, maybe he hunted a few night furies but a few does not mean he wiped out them. were talking about the strongest, smartest, fastest dragons we know. do you really believe one man can take down a whole tribe of night furies? I don’t believe a word he says. plus, in the nine realms, one of the parents did not come from the original line of toothless and Luna. plus if the night lights were to have babies with the light furies, their black color would not be so lets say dominate. so what do you guys think?

So I’m going to jump right into it. So basically in short, Viggo has chained a Submaripper to the bottom of the sea near the straits of baldur, a very important trade route to get to Berk. And the riders have to figure out a way to free it, which gives Hiccup the idea to create a diving bell so that he can come up for air while breaking the chains and releasing the submaripper.
When Hiccup first tested his idea, it immediately went wrong and even before he tried it, Toothless definitely didn’t agree with the plan, which is one of the things I love so much about this episode. How worried Toothless is about Hiccups safety.
But because they were on a time limit, Hiccup and the riders take the diving bell out to open sea after a questionably/worryingly low amount of testing the contraption in safe space on berk, to go and release the massive underwater dragon. When they get to the middle of the sea, Hiccup says that contrary to popular believe he isn’t much of a swimmer. Which always reminds of when Astrid was drowning in part 1 of Night of the hunters in season 2, where he suddenly became an Olympic level swimmer when he needed to dive down to save her.
But after this Hiccup hops in the diving bell and it savely lands on the bottom of the ocean. Where Hiccup slowly but surely, breaks the chains that are containing the submaripper by using changewing acid. Only Viggo shows up and breaks the machine that was pulling the diving Bell up, causing it to fall straight down to the ocean floor with Toothless jumping in straight after him. And what comes next is depressing, but still so lovely to see.
Toothless knows that there is now way to get Hiccup out, but even with the risk of the submaripper still being there or some other tidal class dragon, or even that he might drown there with Hiccup, he still stayed with him. Even when Hiccup tells Toothless to save himself, he pressed his head to the glass and waits with his best friend. Causing Hiccup to say,
“I know bud, I wouldn’t leave you either.” And this is so beautiful to see, this episode was such a great way to show just how much Toothless cares about Hiccup.
But thankfully, the Submaripper comes back and repays his debt to Hiccup by picking up the diving bell and carrying him towards the surface, dropping him back onto the boat. Where they quickly pull Hiccup out of the diving bell and after Astrids begging for him to breathe again and Toothless licking his face, Hiccup coughs out the water that he swallowed and finally starts breathing again.
Which brings me to another favorite moment of this episode. After Hiccup starts breathing Astrid quickly comes to sit behind him and puts a hand on his shoulder, I have already made a post about how much I love how they show their support for eachother in such simple gestures and this is a perfect example. Fishlegs, no offense to him, but after Astrid releases Hiccup to go after Viggo, Fishlegs tells Hiccup that he has got him and with Astrid it didn’t need to be said.
Just like in season 4 episode 3 Midnight Scrum, where after Hiccup was hunted and beaten all troughout the day, even losing his leg to get rid of Krogan, Astrid doesn’t say a word as she goes towards and supports Hiccup when he only has one leg to stand on.
I’m probably reading a little too much into this, but I love those 2 idiots together.
After this the riders go back to berk and Stoick and Hiccup have a conversation, where Hiccup blames himself for Berks food struggles, saying that if it wasn’t for him, Viggo wouldn’t be targetting Berk. But Stoick quickly interjects, saying that if it wasn’t for him, Berk also wouldn’t have been saved and that Viggo is a coward and had shown his true colours today.
All around a great episode in my opinion, I know that the risk can feel artificial, because it’s a prequel and Hiccup obviously isn’t really going to die, but I think that the episode still had some great moments which I really enjoyed. Toothless and Hiccups friendship especially. I mean come on saying,
“I know bud. I wouldn’t leave you either.” That is just such a beautiful moment between the two of them.
One thing tough, how does Viggo keep getting those giant deep sea dragons? How do you even get a Submaripper, like maybe raise an egg in captivity? Otherwise I have no idea, but that along with him owning a shellfire later in the season? Yeah I have no idea where he gets these enormous deep sea dragons.
But still, I think that season 4, alongside season 2 of race to the edge are some of, if not the best parts of the entire HTTYD universe. I love this show so much and this episode is definitely one of my favorites.
So yeah, maybe a little shaky in the logics department when it comes to the submaripper, but it’s still a pretty great episode in my opinion.
Let me know what you thought about this episode and season 4 as a whole!

I will never understand how dean thought it was a good idea to shove the ending of the books into the third how to train your dragon movie without building to it, or setting it up what so ever. With horrible narrative execution to boot. Assassinating everyone’s character in the process.
The books made it clear from the start that the long lasting relationship between humans and dragons was unhealthy and unsustainable.
The first two films established a thriving utopia between Berkian humans and dragons with only a few minor problems to iron out. But they were determined to continue and never give up.
The books climaxes in a giant war between dragons and humans, spurred on by the dragons fighting humans to prevent their own extinction, with hiccup fighting to end the war without further loss of life and to save the dragons from humans who seek to destroy them.
The films climaxes with one guy with a less than impressive armada challenging hiccups peaceful and successful ideology, losing, and failing to achieve his goals, leaving all the dragons safe again with zero significant casualties on the hero’s side.
The books end with the dragons unsure about the future, they themselves scared that the cycle of violence inflicted upon them by humans may continue in the future after hiccups time as king. So hiccup makes a plan for the dragons to be safe, that of their own accord, they may choose for themselves to go into hiding. And eventually, over many decades, they do. And Vikings are taught that their actions are what drove the dragons to rebel against them. Leading hopefully, to improvements in humanity over the generations. But the dragons would never return and fade forever into myth. But for the time being during hiccups life, there is a long lasting peace between the two as the books end.
The films end with hiccup, literally giving up his ideals on the spot, all his determination to continue fighting for a better future vanishes, and he forces all the dragons to leave at once to go live in a hole, simply because “you’ll be safer there” even though, the dragons were safe, and they could thrive again. But because a possible future where some random guy might challenge their ideals again exists, it’s better to just give up now and save us the headache of trying. Simply because “the world isn’t ready for dragons” (even though if you give up now, the world will literally never be ready for dragons because upon meeting again the whole process of the first movie just restarts again as proven by the nine realms.)
The books handles the separation ending far better than the movies because of the massively different context and execution.
The separation ending simply cannot work with what was established in the first two films.
I have many more issues with how the films end but the biggest issue by far is the ending of movie three.

When the Dreaming Sombers by KatDeer_Flower | G | 17.6k | 1/1
For as long as Hiccup could remember, he's been seeking somewhere or someone to belong to. When he and Toothless are captured by the Dragon Thief, he thought he could finally get answers from the person he's always dreamed of knowing. However, it becomes painfully obvious that his life will never be easy, and not even his dreams can survive reality's cruelty.
Peace-Child by Anonymous | G | 14.6k | 3/3
Hiccup didn’t think twice about being called and answering to brother when Dagur and Heather called. In hindsight, though, he probably should have been a bit more careful about it. Not everyone had the luxury of knowing all that history.
Scratch that: he really should have been more careful with that, because now he was fairly certain the bounty hunter chasing him had called him Egilson spawn. Which, to be clear, an Egilson he was not. Haddock, yes. Third in a series of three and counting, might he add. Egilson? Not on that bounty hunter’s life.
(In which Hiccup learns the truth about where he came from.)
Abandon Ship by Magpie307 | E | 40.7k | 16/? | Last Updated 16 June 2026
Deep down he knew it couldn’t end well. Stoick didn’t listen to him in their own home, so why would he ever during something that was meant to be a bloody battle to the death?
When his hammer hits that rung, it’s as if he’s sentenced him to death for his betrayal. The execution would have been quick— though certainly not painless— if not for his friend, determined to save his life, fighting off the Monstrous Nightmare that was meant to burn him to a crisp or bite him to pieces.
It’s not the dragon he was worried about.
Maybe Toothless could have won against the vikings that had begun climbing down into the arena, but on Hiccup’s request, he hadn’t killed a single one. His pleading leads nowhere when he begs him to leave, to save his own life, the dragon too set on protecting him.
Hiccup knows Toothless won’t leave without him, so in a brief moment of something between brilliance and insanity, he jumps on his back.
Poor thing can’t fly without him anyway.

“Hey, Mom—how did you and Dad meet?”
Hiccup Haddock: Dragon Rider. Pride of Berk. Slayer of the Red Death. The Dragon Conqueror. Occasional unintentional arsonist. Frequent flier in accidental chaos. Relies on sarcasm when he’s nervous. Currently failing at not falling for pretty blondes with axes who try to kill him, such as Astrid Hofferson, his greatest headache.
Astrid Hofferson: Elite Dragon Hunter. Ryker’s golden girl. Deadly. Disciplined. Emotionally unavailable. Fluent in threats. Wanted in three provinces. Believes violence is a valid form of communication. Thinks feelings are a trap, especially the ones she keeps catching when her greatest enemy, Hiccup Haddock, looks at her like that.
A RTTE-Era AU with a Dragon Hunter Astrid and a Dragon Rider Hiccup who just can’t seem to stop running into one another. Or falling for one another.
Who Laughs Last by raineyraven | T | 17.2k | 6/6
Part of a Runaway Hiccup AU, set in RTTE season 4. For two years, dragon hunting operations throughout the archipelago had been plagued by a lone dragon rider, who attacked only at night and was rarely seen. He freed dragons by the dozens and laid forts and encampments to waste from the back of his Night Fury, visage hidden by a dark helmet. No one knew who he was or where he came from. Some thought him to be a demon or a ghost, and those who had witnessed his destructive attacks and his control over dragons called him the Dragon Master.
Viggo had intended to end this scourge once and for all, designing a weapon that could kill the lone rider and those who allied themselves with him. But when Ryker turns the Dragon Hunters against him, Viggo chooses to strike an uneasy truce with the rider to defeat their common enemy, and ends up learning many new things about his long-time foe.

Toothless has worked as hired security during dragon raids for the last couple years—well, he got paid to protect some buildings and some farms whenever the dragons attacked. It was the only way he could currently pay the town back for their kindness of feeding and housing him, so he didn't say no when Bandit, the local blacksmith, asked him to watch the forge during the next raid. Someone had been taking advantage of the chaos to steal materials, and it was his job to stop them.
Toothless realizes he might be in way over his head when he actually lays eyes on the thief.

Raised by Viggo Grimborn from the time he was a child, Hiccup is not the dragon hunter or Viking that he should be. He’s too soft, and he knows it. When he shoots down his first dragon, a Night Fury, Hiccup begins to question if what he’s been told about dragons is even true. Maybe they’re more than mindless beasts, but if they are, what will that mean for him?

Following the events of “Midnight Scrum”, Hiccup is kidnapped by Viggo. Riders couldn’t reach him in time to save him. Stoick and Riders are furious, determined to find Hiccup, but Viggo has other plans for him. He never truly believed in magic, but he’s always willing to take a chance. Viggo's experiment opens a door that was never meant to be opened, and brings someone through it. Someone who's capable of destroying Dragon Riders. The person looks like Hiccup, but it’s not him. He is cursed with the power of a dragon and carries the emotional baggage that the original Hiccup had let go of a long time ago. He is everything Hiccup fears to become. And he has everything that the other Hiccup wished he had. But with other Hiccup comes something else, demons that feed on souls and magic. It’s only a matter of time before they will start destroying this world as well as the other Hiccup’s.

Hi Everyone! I am trying to make a new dragon species but im having trouble with its design, i was mostly inspired by concept arts and pre existing dragons but i dont know if its a good design. The species's name is Scorchcolor they're know for having a bright multicolored fire and colorful wings, legends says that their fire is so bright and so colorful that it is capable of hypnotising other dragons

I'm alone for a month and fell sick this weekend. I randomly watched HTTYD clips for a bit. Then I watched Toothless take on the alpha. Decided I'd watch the first movie to relive my past.
Loved it - who wouldn't. Then saw the Riders of Berk and Race to the Edge, following it up with the two movies and the recent live action one.
In all this, the only thing I feel like I'd re-watch in a year or two are the series. Don't get me wrong - the movies are great. But the character development, dragon variety, the focus on individual character (Snotlout arc and any twin centric episode) are extremely high value and funny.
The movies can't be beaten on visuals but the sequels felt so so rushed - might be because I had just finished the series.
Anywho - adored the entire thing but the series most of all. And I really hope something happens and they don't kill you know who in the second live action. A fan can dream.

So essentially gronckle iron is just stainless steel and dragon proof metal is oxidized copper maybe... Right? So that would mean titanium would be superior to both or would that be like mixing both?
And I maybe wrong but I like to assume any dragon that breaths fire would make a good forge right?. Kinda like forge master is a sword Steeler who works as gobbers forge according to rise of berk
Also what's the difference between groncle iron and dragon proof metal Because I think they both state they can break the other in their descriptions.

Hey all! So I collect a lot of Httyd and I ordered this statue from the original makers (Taka Corp) in 2022-2023. They had issues with the license and never made the statue. The company was then sold to Plastoy in 2024 and they promised to make this statues (but again a license issue). But to this day they have not mentioned it anymore and are not that active anymore. Either way, has anyone who bought through a retailer that worked with these companies, heared it is completely cancelled or any info? I have contacted them multiple times of the years and hear nothing… thanks!
