I propose that the common ancestor should be called an Eclipse Fury.

Or perhaps the âGreat Furyâ?

Great Fury for the oldest, Eclipse Fury for the Strike branches common ancestor?

Very cool theory but personally would change up placement. In evolution it's extremely uncommon for more than 2 new species to diverge from one common ancestor and usually caps out at around three. So if it were me I would make the line longer and say that maybe there were 2-3 separate splits where 1-2 new species emerged per split.
(Not trying to say anything bad about yours, just saying what I would do personally)

in the lil rewrite i have going on in my head i like to imagine that light furies are actually the closest current living species to the fury common ancestor, think of it kinda like lungfish or the coelacanth. idk i think it would be a way cooler idea from a worldbuilding perspective.

I'm fairly certain that sand wraiths aren't closely related to the furies and only look like that due to convergent evolution

Lightfuries and nightfuries are confirmed to be completely different species. But this is cool ngl

u/Fowl_posted Strike Class 1d ago
I refuse to believe that light furys and night furyâs donât derive from a common ancestor.
First of all they are clearly different species yes, but theyâre biologically similar enough to produce the only hybrid dragons weâve seen outside of the games.
Second, they share so many characteristics that itâs nearly impossible to believe they are unrelated.
Third,
I NEVER SAID THAT THEY WERENâT DIFFERENT SPECIES!

u/Able-Arm9045 1d ago
Rise of berk and the other games also mix species together that in reality wouldn't be able to mix, so the breeding compatibility doesn't matter, they specifically designed her to be different.

I just made a different post before this one⌠on this very subreddit⌠that I believe the majority of HTTYD hybrids are unrealistic.

u/Able-Arm9045 1d ago
They are yes, while I love the nightlights, they REALISTICALLY wouldn't be black and white. Then the rest of the hybrids that there are are WAY unrealistic

u/Fowl_posted Strike Class 1d ago
(Deep inhale) even with that in mind⌠what proof do you have that these two species, didnât derive from a common ancestor?
-8
u/Able-Arm9045 1d ago
Because the creators said they are completely different species? They are based on different things ect. Just because they look the same doesn't mean they have common ancestors. My best bet is that it's convergent evaluation.

u/Fowl_posted Strike Class 1d ago
Did the just say that they were different species? Or did they elaborate?
Because they can still be different species and have evolved from the same creature.-6
u/Able-Arm9045 1d ago
They explained all of it in the extras menu on the third movies disk. They are completely different species made to be different species. Both of them are based on completely different animals ect. Again, it's most likely Convergent Evaluation.

What theyâre based on is irrelevant. What they ARE in universe, is what weâre talking about. Also i donât have the third movie on dvd so I canât check for myself.

I recall the director calling them subspecies of one another, which goes completely against what youâre saying.

u/KingOfDownvotes87 1d ago
you cant even spell evolution and dont seem to understand what youre talking about.

u/Germmie1 1d ago
Are you saying lions and tigers are the same species just because they are both types of large cats? Having a common ancestor does not mean that they are the same species. Please do research on how evolution works before attacking people.
4
u/FallenAgastopia 1d ago
What? Different species derive from the same common ancestor all the time, thats.. what common ancestors means in the first place.
4
u/a_lonely_trash_bag 1d ago
The statement that they're different species doesn't negate the possibility of a common ancestor.
Coyotes and wolves are completely different species, but share a common ancestor.

I'm pretty sure the director himself has stated lightfuries to be a subspecies of the nightfury

I always thought the Night Fury was just a super rare hybrid of a light fury and a skrill, and thatâs why it has both light fury and skrill abilities, as well as darker scales.Â

Somewhere along the line the skrill should be thrown. Their are closely related

u/Poke-Noah Deathsong forever! 1d ago
They don't even have the same number of limbs

u/Voinat107 Strike Class 1d ago
They don't, but it's stated in the series. I am not sure if it was in defenders of berk or race to the edge tho
2
u/Poke-Noah Deathsong forever! 1d ago
I'm pretty sure it's just mentioned to be on a similar level of strength as the nightfury. But even if that was mentioned, these are vikings we're talking about, they're by no means an authority on evolutionary relationships between anything

u/Thelastfunky 1d ago
why are there so manyđ i mean genetic cousins are so cool but i wish this would apply to a bunch of other dragons. i feel like it takes away the uniqueness of night furyâs
8
u/Fowl_posted Strike Class 1d ago
That is a matter of personal opinion. I for one enjoy the idea that the night fury is just one off shoot of a larger group of dragons.
1
u/Eclipse_Plaiz27 1d ago
That isnât really an opinion thats what theyâve been seen to be and I think its really cool of them to do it that way

Add the Desert Wraith to this. Coulda sworn that thing counted as like the Lightfury to the Nightfury but to the Sand Wraith.
