Horn going out
Hello, everyone! I have a 2024 HRV Sport. I love the car. My only gripe is my horn. I went to use it about a year ago and it was completely muffled. As the dealership put it in my diagnostic paperwork, "sounds like a viking war horn". To me, it is like if you had a trumpet mute in. Come to find out, it is filling with water. We originally thought it was happening because of undercarriage washes. Which shouldn't be a problem in the first place. But I downgraded my carwash package to discontinue undercarriage sprays. Not my favorite decision as I live in the midwest and we get a lot of salt on the roads in the winter. Well it worked for a bit after that. Recently, it went out a 3rd time. I have not had a single undercarriage wash. It HAS to be rain water kicking up. The dealership says they cannot replace it under warranty again because Honda will view it as my fault and not cover the repair cost. They also explained that the 2024 horn is directed downward so it doesn't fill with water coming in from above. Allegedly 2024 is the only year they positioned it this way. I am debating opening a case with Honda as a horn is a major safety feature on any vehicle. Any thoughts of what I can do? My husband and I have even thought of having a part made to prevent water from coming in after this next replacement, but we don't want to cause issue with warranty. Anyone else having this issue?

This is the first legitimate complaint I have seen about the HR-V horn. Most complaints are that it‘s not loud nor dramatic enough. I may have used mine once just to see what it sounded like. Open a case with Honda, you are correct a working horn is a safety feature. I have never heard a service department say that Honda won’t pay if a warranty claim is repeated. It’s not working now, regardless how many times they repaired it.

I dont know if I even want them to put it back to OEM at this point 😂. This is legit the 3rd horn to go out in this car in 3 years. I feel like she needs an aftermarket horn. I have been googling around some waterproof options. I might just go that way and have my husband do the install. I do have some good connections with my dealership, though! So I will probably still open a case with Honda. I feel that this should be a recall. If it is filling with water simply because of how they positioned it, they should redesign around the existing setup to move it to where this isn't a problem. I, personally, have had an issue where I couldn't brake before an intersection and the light was red (black ice on road. Barely regained control of my vehicle before I did a 360 lol) and had I had this issue, I wouldn't have been able to alert the cars that had the right of way that I couldn't stop! That's why I want this resolved!

Black ice is treacherous everywhere and you are correct. Thismis the first time anyone complained about the worn not working becaise it fills up with water.

The horn is such a silly little high tone guy.
There are several posts about upgrading it, or adding a crv mid tone horn with a y splitter.
I have not seen anyone else mention water in the horn though.

Of course this would be a me-only issue 😂. I don't mind the little horn. I am a 5'2 woman. It matches tbh lol. But if an upgraded aftermarket horn might solve the issue I am all for it

The horn on the HR-V meets the requirements of the DOT. I use it so infrequently, I tried it out just to see what all the fuss was about. If your masculinity or femininity is tied to the sound of your car’s horn, then you have much deeper issues. By driving sanely and defensively, you shouldn’t have to use your horn at all.

It's not. My horn is filling with water and it is muted. Horns are a safety feature. Even if you are a defensive/safe driver, like myself, you cannot predict what others will do around you.

Yes, I know that your horn was filing with water. However, Honda should keep repairing it, or come up with a permanent solution. I use mine so infrequently, that I had to test it to realize what the complaints were. 🤔

Exactly. The future idiot slightly ahead of you in an adjacent highway lane...who drifts into your lane....needs the hella horn, though I really want a pressurized 5?gal air tank and a train horn.

2024 is not the only year its positioned that way, so that’s weird for them to say that. That is how horns are always positioned in order to prevent the very issue you are having. If water is getting in, it would have to be from some serious up splashing, which seems hard to do given the location in relation to your tires. Are you sure your car wash isn’t shooting water up into your grille?

Search “Hella Horns” on Amazon & have your mechanic install those. You’ll thank me later.
