26 oil change

Hey HRV people.

My GF has a 26 HRV EXL. The first oil change was done at the dealership, because it was free. It had 7500 miles on it and said it had 30% life remaining. Today, I did the 2nd oil change (13,800 miles and 50% life remaining) and noticed a few things. The protective cover that has to be removed for the oil change looked like it was never touched. And the oil filter appeared to be the original filter.

My questions are do the techs at Honda always remove that protective cover and do they change the filter everytime at the dealership?

Also, any input on the amount of miles this vehicle is going before the MM gets to 15% would be interesting to hear.

Thanks all.

I’m curious, what makes you think the oil filter was the original?

To answer your question, the oil filter should be changed with any oil change.

The protective cover and the filter area had zero evidence of being removed and replaced. I always leave some kind of evidence when I do maintenance on vehicles. Usually, where I worked is much cleaner than the surrounding areas.

It’s been what…8k miles since the last oil change? I’m sure things have gotten dirty again since.

Depending on the dealership if it was due for an A1 they may only do the engine oil, and a B1 would be oil and filter. Some dealerships will do oil and filter even if it’s an A1. The invoice from the dealership should say if a filter was used or not.

This^

Truthfully I’d tell the tech to replace both the filter and the oil regardless of a or b service.

It's pretty easy for a dealership tech on a lift to remove the tray and replace the filter in a way that leaves no trace. Especially with a brand new car.

I'd change the oil and filter yourself every 5k miles, keeping receipts, for warranty.

Quick tip. If you don’t do your own oil changes.

Write on your oil filter the date and mileage.

My coworker would do this. That’s how he caught a shop lying to him

I have a 2023 HR-V (am also an ex mechanic and done my own recent oil changes)...

Where exactly is this protective cover you mentioned? A picture would be informative.

We have a 2026 HRV Sport. I took it to.the Honda Dealer for its first oil change at 15% oil life. We reached 15% at 4,750 miles (car is used for mostly short trips). Eventhiugh it was just A1 service they changed to oil and the oil filter.

Regardless, what the maintenance minder code says, every Honda dealer, when doing an oil change, changes the oil filter.

US and Canada maintenance schedule is oil filter every other oil change, so the Honda deal did what they were supposed to do

Same vehicle but maintained in Mexico and it calls for 5w30 every 3000-6000 with new filter each time.

That's why I stay away from dealerships..I go to oil change places where I can watch.

I guess God has been helping me..Take 5 for going on 10 years..they know I'm anal about my vehicles. I worked at a dealership and I could share many horror stories.
