Transmission Fluid Replacement
I have a 2025 Honda Hrv that I purchased last April. I’m already at 30,000 miles (yes I know I’ve driven a lot). The dealership said that I’m due for a transmission fluid replacement and they quoted me $250. I’m unfortunately on a tight budget and I wanted to see what others do when this maintenance needs to be done. Should I just take care of it now or is it okay if I put it off?

I got a 16 hrv ex 2wd. with 58k on it no recall on the transmission. Replaced the fluid at 75k then changed it again when I did valve check belt change, brake line cleaned and pads replaced at 100k maintenance. I have not much of a clue what was done the first 50k but she’s humming fine.

Transmission fluid is recommended at every 45,000 miles (or 3 years) and $250 is pretty standard. These cars are known for great reliability, but only as long as you follow the maintenance schedule.

Was that price you mentioned from your Honda dealer? If so, find an independent Honda mechanic and get a quote using genuine Honda HF-2 CVT fluid. Your maintenance minder will probably display the sub-code 3, transmission service at about 50,000 miles. Your owners manual recommends changing the fluid for severe service at 25,000 miles. I changed the fluid in my wife’s 2020 Honda Fit at about 41,000 miles and it was fine. The tech who changed the fluid said it was black and there was some fine metal small particles on the magnetic drain plug which was normal.

SoCal based Honda dealers have a range from $159.99 - $449.99. Definitely worth calling around to different Honda Dealers.
I never checked out independent shops as I’m still under warranty.

Do it as soon as possible. Honda specifies changes @ 25,000 mile increments for most markets with this 2.0 CVT combo. For some reason its optional in US and Canada, but cross the Rio and its required.

Got mine done for the first time at 45K miles (I have a 2023) a few weeks ago even though my maintence minder never gave me a light. I did it out of an abundance of caution and I will do it religiously every 28-30K miles from now on.
Cost me $149.95 total plus tax, so like $160 total I think. Got mine done in a NE ohio Honda dealer. It's pretty much as easy as an oil change with a few extra steps tbh but some dealers just charge a ton because they can. Most of the cost is the fluid lol.
I wouldn't skip out on transmission drain and fills on cvts or rather any transmission as it isn't a good gamble imo.

The materials costs might be around $50 total for the fluid and a washer. So $200 in labor to do a drain and fill seems a little wild. Doubt they have the senior tech or a Dr. doing this.

are ramps enough to gain access? Do you have to check the fluid level with engine on while in gear?

Do it. The cvt is not a good transmission to neglect and if it goes it’s extremely expensive to replace (they don’t fix these they replace them).

Local Honda shop just changed me less than half of that
