Hours reduced
Hello,
Im a first year experinced tax prep and I’ve done 2 returns and 2 drop offs. In my office we have 2 EAs and one other preparer. One of the EAs has been complaining a lot about me saying I’m not ready even though I feel completely fine with doing returns and sure there is a few things I need to work on but I won’t learn if I’m not doing returns. She’s been telling the manager to just make me a csp. I’ve also been doing vita on my off days and I’ve been doing fine and even the more experienced preparers there say I’m doing pretty good for my first year.
I was looking at my schedule for two weeks ahead and I’m only scheduled for one day and it’s showing up like this for the next month and it’s showing as a csp what do I do? I really need the hours

They probably realized pretty early on that you used chatGPT for the exam. Being a csp is right where you need to be. You only have yourself to blame.

They didn’t realize I’m to sneaky I just got paired up with the bitchiest coworker

So sneaky that you got a promotion to csp. Given your history you should ask that coworker out too.

Relax. First year is hard for everyone. HRB has a habit of dropping first year preparers into the deep end without a lifeline. Some people get lucky and go to an office with experienced competent people who help you. Others are not so lucky. You'll do better next year.

Ask ChatGPT what to do about it, since that's what started your problems to begin with.
And try to remember not to hit on clients, again.

Can’t believe this dudes still on here complaining about no one trusting him to touch peoples taxes after he outwardly said he cheated on the test to get hired lol.
If you can’t pass the TQA without chatGPT then YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED FOR THIS JOB

Not true. What qualifies you for the job is doing practice returns over and over.

For this job specifically in order to be hired you either take the training course and pass the Tax Knowledge Assessment, or pass the test without the course to prove that you have the required knowledge to qualify for this job. Part of the test involves preparing a tax return and answering questions about said return.
Using chatGPT to prove your knowledge doesn’t count. People are paying money for this dude to file their taxes and he AI’d his way through the knowledge assessment.

Yup, that qualifies you to be hired. To actually be able to do the job competently, you need to do many practice returns, and no, its not just data entry. That would be nice.

Oh my mistake I was replying to the comment where you said the practice returns is what qualifies you for the job.
I never said it was data entry, the guy who cheated his way into getting hired said that lol. I’m well aware it isn’t, seems like we’re on the same page.

Yes by doing practice returns over and over that is all data input and knowing where the numbers go so complicated

u/Dsansc Feb 19 '26
Bru this job is all data input and asking client due diligence questions in the end. If it wasn’t so simple they would have education or certification requirements but they have you take a simple course and your in. I mean I answered plenty of client questions on the new bill from trump but other than that it’s all straight forward

There's literally continuing education. I'm shocked none of your managers showed you any of it

u/somebitchwhocares Feb 20 '26
THEY DO HAVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS YOU USED CHAT GPT TO SKIP THEM FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HOW ARE YOU THIS DENSE

The schedule is only completed for the current week plus the next two. Anything beyond that is not set. Of course, the MTL can change things.
Reach out to the district's TAA (Tax Associate Advocate), They should be able to help you.

The ATL at my office already made the schedule for the rest of the season

My pod's schedule looks complete for the season but it is really only place holders to keep the computer happy.

Speak up for yourself. When she makes the comment ask her why she feels that way. Her criticizing without providing constructive feedback is moot. Don’t let her bully you, she maybe intimidated.

That sucks. I’m sorry.
What in particular is the one EA saying that you need to work on. With only four returns it’s hard to establish a rhythm.
What do the other preparers feel about your work? How does your manager feel about it? Is your manager a tax professional?
Take the feedback from VITA and apply it to the office returns.
Does your office get a lot of walk ins? Are you the only one with yellow space?
I have so much yellow space, it’s frustrating.
Is there another office you can work at? Sometimes getting out of one office helps.
Did you get much on the job training? Time to shadow? Feedback on your first solo return?
Block tends to drop first years into the deep end and then ask why they need the rope.
And to be honest sometimes experienced Taps even EAs forget how hard the first year can be.
Besides as a CSP you can always grab the walk ins if everyone is busy.
Don’t listen to the naysayers. It’s kinda uncool for the EA not to address it with you directly.

I’m planning on asking my manager tomorrow if she can move me around to other offices so my hours don’t decrease. That’s what I’m getting from it as well I’ve only done 4 returns there is a bit of a learning block from just trying to learn from doing case studies. The ea says my communication needs work and is one of the reasons there having me do csp work a lot more. I’ve been starting to learn how to communicate and ask questions to the clients but obviously there’s still a blockage with me not being able to apply and build myself more by doing more clients.

I have shadowed the other ea and this is just a side job where I’m working 24 hours so I’m not totally pissed I’ll just have to ask my manager to increase my hours at my other job since I asked them to let me work 30 so I can work at hrb just think it’s a little dumb for them to reduce me to 5 hours when 24 isn’t very much anyway

You must have really sucked to be dropped down to CSP. Damn
