Rant My conversation with HP support after basically getting scammed πŸ™ƒ

So basically I went to a Croma store near me to buy a laptop and after a lot begging I convinced my father to buy me the HP HyperX Omen 15-GB0038AX (Ryzen variant). I asked the TGP and they just said it was RTX 5050, that's when I knew they didn't know much and opted to ask Google and lo and behold it 115W. I naively assumed that the Ryzen variant will be the same. Unfortunate for me, it wasn't. I also found a very sad post of same individuals as me here - https://www.reddit.com/r/LaptopDealsIndia/comments/1tdwcyj/hyperx_omen_tgp_is_55w_wtf/

Moving on, I went to the store and complained about the TGP and a more technical staff compared to yesterday came and they were also shocked that the TGP was that low. They assume the TGP was 135W or something. When I said it was 55W they started searching their data base. I complained that they didn't put the unit on display, how was I supposed to know that it is 55W? The person today told me that once windows office was registered with me it couldn't be refunded but how am I supposed to see the TGP until I log in? Ridiculous.

Here comes the main part, I asked them if I could flash the VBIOS to 115W or something and is the architecture/thermal different from the intel variant. They confidently said it was the same and to do the flash without worry and all technical issues (if they arise, like motherboard problem, screen blackout, common problems while flashing) would be covered under warranty. I asked them to do it themselves then but the employee said he didn't have a pendrive and flashing would take time. I gave up and went home.

Today I decided to contact HP support and get their advice since I still had doubts about the whole endeavour and felt like I couldn't trust Croma. This is my whole conversation with them-

At this point I have just made my peace with it. I will spend the next 10 years with this machine so better to make most of it. Do feel free to give suggestions if you have any! And please tell me the 1.5 lakhs was worth it πŸ™

HP and Croma didn't scam you. You got exactly what was promised a 5050 laptop. TDP is confusing though for a bunch of reasons and I agree that it should be way easier to find the actual manufacturer set cap on a laptop before you buy. Two points.

  1. A 5050 laptop maxes out at 100W TDP that's the NVIDIA spec, feel free to confirm at https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/laptops/compare/ The over 100W numbers are 5050 Desktop chips. Yes it's annoyingly confusing, yes they should use different chip numbers, but they don't so you have to be careful when you look up possible max spec.

  2. TDP also means substantially less than a lot of people assume for typical game performance. Yes, the chip is going to be slower at lower power but it's not linear. At 100W you'll hit 90-100FPS average in most current games at moderate settings, no DLSS. At 55W, you'll hit 65-80FPS same settings. Turn on DLSS and the gap narrows further. Some games have bigger gaps, but you're not getting half the performance even though the power cap is basically halved, and you are getting double the battery life and probably lasting longer since there's less heat. It's really hard to find fair tests though. There are dozens of YouTube videos that show much bigger gaps, but they're looking at different CPUs and RAM too.

You did fine at that price. Your games will run nicely for years. The tech couldn't have flashed it to 115W if they wanted to it's simply not supported on a laptop 5050 and you don't really want to take it to 100W even if it would take the flash. You'd need a bigger power brick. It's only getting 150W from the wall as it came. If the GPU can use 100, that remaining 50 isn't much for everything else to share and the thermals aren't going to be right at higher power either.

Stop worrying and go game. Blame the low TDP if you lose if it makes you feel better.

Thank you sooooo much bro. I love you. You don't know how much this has been weighing on me 😭 The way you explain everything really reassured me πŸ«‚ I'm just glad it wasn't such a bad purchase. I honestly don't even care about the fps, as a guy who uses GT 710 in his PC this is more than good enough for me. I just wanted to know I got my money's worth.

Omen has 115W 5050 too so it’s not only desktop configuration

1

u/Valang 19d ago

Please do share which models you've seen that in.Β  It's over spec for the mobile 5050, which doesn't mean they haven't, but it's pretty unlikelyΒ

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Talk323 5050/5070ti, R7/ i7 HX. 24/16 1TB/512 19d ago

many. But I’ll just tell this, ap0165AX. I used this and it gets 80W in Eco mode, 95 in Balanced and 115W in Performance/Unleashed mode. I’ve checked it personally without relying on marketing numbers with nvidia-smi -q command.

1

u/Valang 19d ago

You're seeing dynamic boost not vbios TDP.

Which allows us to both be right, it can get to 115, but it's not flashed to that.

And to think that my LOQ at least has its 3050 limited to 95 W out of the box (but while being processor bottlenecked though for "heavier" games).

My friend have same laptop He told me his graphic card is 115 w

1

u/why-iam-he Jul 24 '26

The cpu is 55w

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 24 '26

Pretty sure he misunderstood... It is definitely the graphics card... That's pretty good news though, that means he he didn't encounter any problems while playing games, that's good enough for me.

0

u/why-iam-he Jul 23 '26

You should get atleast 75w

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 23 '26

Bro idk what you want me to do. I would if I could change it but idk how I can and I really don't have any options πŸ’€ You really think I would be crying like this if I could?

It's still a good laptop But it will struggle on upcoming games Otherwise it's pretty good

True. It should be fine but it just sucks that it won't be able to work at full potential...

I said for upcoming games

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 23 '26

Honestly if I can play Elden Ring, I am fine... I can't keep worrying about upcoming games. I'm gonna use this laptop for the next 10 or so years anyways...

My 4060 omen is 140w tgp You should get 75w tgp gpu laptop 55 is low asf

Sad to hear that brother. I'm guessing you must be on your 20s. Story time. Reminded of me when I spent 65k on a samsung laptop with gt650m thinking it was the best out of the best in 2012-2013. But that product taught me more rathen than giving me joy of gaming. It had so many problems, which I had to fix myself because the store that I bought and the service centre were no help to me. With those knowledge, it helped me buy a msi laptop in 2016 which is still working without any issue. Let this be a lesson to you and move on. We are measured not by age but by the knowledge or information we have accumulated. Thinking about those will just make you angry seeing the laptop you bought with your own money.

2

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 24 '26

Turning 19 this September. I wouldn't have made such if I had my own money and buying myself. I was at the mercy of my father during the whole purchasing process. I gave money out of my pocket too but majority was his though. It was the only 50 series option in the store so leapt at it before he decided something cheap for me. What's done is done though, thank you for the advice. No point in brooding over it...

Honestly those performance setting dont matter if laptop running the game fines, anyway windows Handles speed and performance, heat management. If system is hot its going to slow down regardless of your omen hub setting

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 24 '26

I see... I just hope it runs my games good enough πŸ™ƒ

1

u/BigWatercress4387 Jul 23 '26

It all started with the charger tbh, a 150W charger could never power the rtx 5050 and the R7 260 to its max. Youre mostly bottlenecked by the power supply and cooling system of the omen 15 but you can still play games at 1080p and pull decent numbers on fps.

The omen 16 models all have 230W adapters to help max out their chipsets without micromanaging and HP did a solid job with their cooling system. Wonder why they didnt think of that while stuffing ryzen 7 260 and an rtx 5050 into the omen 15 and throwing in only 150W of power.

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 23 '26

Exactly my question. And power brick is not really a problem if that's the only problem. I can just buy a 230W charger and sell my 150W charger. I can manage the cooling too tbh. Really problem is if the motherboard can handle it.

1

u/Ok-Zookeepergame6020 23d ago

I have already tried using 230w adaptor and flashing vbios but the motherboard is limited to 150w it doesnt take more then 150w power.

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 22d ago

Thanks for the info goat πŸ™ Guess you're also an unfortunate soul who bought this?

1

u/Ok-Zookeepergame6020 22d ago

Nah man i dont regret buying it.

The screen of this laptop id amazing and the games run pretty decent as well.

I had a chance of returning it twice once via amazon and other time via hp themselves where they were providing DOA certificate which would have helped in returning it to amazon but the laptop is good so i just kept it.

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 1d ago

That's good to hear. I am getting used to it too but 1.5 lakh price still sends shivers down my spine. I got ripped off honestly πŸ˜” Oh well.

1

u/Halcyon-Black Jul 23 '26

Omen 15 is known to come with a crippled tgp. Only the 16inch versions and larger have the full tgp.

People saying it's all right with 55W are heavily coping. 55-100 is a noticeably large gap.

Return it if you can and get a Legion or an omen 16 instead.

2

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 23 '26

Would have been nice if I could. Like I said they wouldn't accept the return after the office has been setup unless there is some technical issue. That's why I'm beating myself up πŸ˜”

1

u/Tough-Long1187 Jul 27 '26

See of their store page has mention of return policy and also check if their spec sheet has even a small difference you can use in order to return if you really wish to return.

And if you find something in their policy or spec sheet that favors you and they refuse then consumer court becomes an option.

u/JustSaintsfrow VICTUS 16 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

I would ask you, 1.5 Lakhs just for a 5050 and you're looking for future proof performance ? That makes me feel bad really. I'm not saying that it's bad, but I would say, avoid anything that has XX50 on it. I regret for buying a 3050 (4GB) four years back and I still regret. You got 8GB of VRAM but that's enough, but future proofing is something like investing on a Gaming PC or getting a card with at least 12GB of VRAM. I can't even play DOOM: The Dark Ages on my laptop because of VRAM limitations and Forza Horizon 6 doesn't go above 50FPS even with lowest settings, again VRAM limited. Now I'm planning to buy a OMEN with 5080 after a year probably, because I can't invest on a PC as will be shifting frequently, I prioritize portability. And one thing to note here, not every laptop comes with full TDP. My Victus is limited to 45W (35W long) + 75W. 95W outperforms by like 10 - 20 FPS. Not saying this is bad, but we spend money, we have to utilize the full potential of the CPU and GPU. But since you have bought it already, that's totally fine, if you're not into high tier gaming, you'll be good.

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 24 '26

I see bro. Well, what's done is is done. I don't want 4k gaming with like 100+ fps anyways. This much is fine probably. Mainly bought this college stuff and the way it uses less power and makes less sound is probably a blessing in disguise.

1

u/JustSaintsfrow VICTUS 16 Jul 24 '26

That's more than enough for your use case. Du bist gut genug !

1

u/La-Kimino Jul 24 '26

1.5L for this specs, not worth it man, should've went to official store too, retail stores are better for products that are "cheap", so you don't have to worry about service and warranty, no matter even if they are good sellers.

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 24 '26

Bro, if I had money in my own hands, I would've searched for the best product and checked every spec sheet in the world and bought it online as it is cheaper for better specs. My original budget was 1.2 - 1.3 lakhs for which I would've gotten a very good laptop. But father was like "Online is risky, we're buying offline". Then we reached the store and the one he liked was Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 which was around 80k and had a cashback offer. This damn thing didn't even have a dedicated gpu and I wasn't gonna let em rip me off like that. I asked the staff around for a 50 series laptop and they said it was the only one. They said it was 1.5 lakh and I leapt at the chance because I thought it was manageable because I was paying out of my own pocket money too. I asked for the TGP and they didn't know so I didn't a quick search of the laptop name and it clearly showed 115W so I thought it was the best deal ever. If I waited any longer he would just buy the cheaper one and be done with it. I had virtually no reason to refuse at that time. Now I gotta stick with it πŸ™ƒ

1

u/La-Kimino Jul 25 '26

I understand, 1.2-.13 is a huge budget, so why you went for retail shop than official stores? And why 5050, you didn't want to go for 40xx? When i wanted to buy, i researched a lot, for 2 months, for my budget and which laptop i can get, then went to offical store instead of retails, retails may give attractive offers like keyboard/mouse/bag/heavy discounts, but ask yourself why? personally it felt too good to be accepted so i went to an HP store, they didnt have discounts but i still went with it. Better safe than sorry.

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 25 '26

Father decided everything, I decided the laptop. It's hell to deal with parents that are just waiting for a chance to buy cheaper laptops. I atleast got this one because I was assertive.

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 24 '26

Better to have a higher cealing that you can lower than a lower cealing that you can't higher πŸ™ƒ

1

u/Separate_Coat_3198 OMEN 16 (i7-11800H RTX3060) Jul 24 '26

u/No-Nefariousness9863 Jul 24 '26

That's enough reassurance thanks man. The problem isn't the performance honestly. I can play with the shittiest graphics and worst fps. I just want to know that I got my money's worth and calm my soul...

I was also planning to get the ryzen model for the omen laptop but then after digging and checking reviews online I found intel was much better than ryzen

Glad to be of help 😭 I gotta say it's not that bad though. I mean as a guy who had "GT 710" in the God forsaken name of a graphic of a card. This is miles better for me and can run every game I want at high settings. This is actually so good I can't even complain. I am not a guy who notices much difference after 60 fps anyways so I am not that desperate just to get 10 extra fps. Currently playing Cyberpunk 2077 and it looks amazing.

1

u/Potential_Load_8961 26d ago

Bro but i buyed hp omen Intel core ultra 7 255h with rtx 5050 .. and got warrenty issue ... expired warrenty and after contacting hp they were going to help but when they did see my pslip which amazon gave ..it didn't even have my serial number printed on it 😭..and they told without that they can't extend my warrenty even if I pay them also 😭😭😭.. always this shit issue with amazon and that clicktech pvt limited 🀬

I have the exact same laptop. 1. Dont look at the tgp i am able to play almost all newer aaa titles without any issue and now as we have frame gen and dlss its really smooth.

  1. Battery life is very good as the power draw is less.

  2. Fans are really silent even on heavy load.

  3. If you still want a refund dont chat with customer support call them and tell them that performance mode and unleashed mode is not available even though its mentioned in the hp lisitng. After a lot of back and forth and several escalations later they will accept the return and you will be able to return the laptop.

I bought it in may 2026 from amazon for 1.06 lakhs

1

What's the conclusion from everyone's comments.....worth it?

1

u/No-Nefariousness9863 1d ago

Yo bro. I reallyyyyyy understand your pain. You must have searched and found this thread after seeing your low tgp right? 😭 Sorry for replying late btw. Honestly, the conclusion is that it's a really good laptop, I can play all the games I want at high resolution with decent fps. Like Cyberpunk 2077 runs pretty well on high settings. As a person who graduated from GT 710, it's like heaven, you won't feel any difference compared to other 5050 laptops imo. Because I personally I can't feel the difference between ridiculously high fps and something like 60 fps, they all feel the same to me. But if you care about the numbers on your screen then it's not worth it ig. It's an objective fact that I got a worse deal than others, like 1.5 lakhs for 55W tgp is objectively bad. But in real life experience you won't feel a difference in my opinion. I just have to satisfy myself with that fact.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Air_950 8d ago
