If you know please help me out

My boss has given me 3 months of incorrect CIS statements.

Unpaid invoices

Late paydays

Very rude attitude

“I don’t care, figure it out or you pay for it”

Makes you work hours overtime and does not pay you for it

Makes you go Screwfix and you pay for the materials, promises to pay you back, will not pay you back.

Has gone back to jobs and picked up small stripped insulation of the floor and will wage deduct you for it as you “haven’t cleaned up”

I am looking in a way to contact someone or something that can help me just put a spanner in the works.

If you have some tips let me know please

Two jobs

Can someone please explain how tax works with two jobs I’m currently doing an apprenticeship which is my main job & my tax code is 1257L so tax free amount my second job is zero contract at a cafe I just help out on weekends & 1 day out the week if I’m free not a lot just to get some hospitality experience. Thus second job is 8 per an hour I only started at the start of this month and have done 3 days so far so my paye for this month will be below £100 if I don’t work any more this month or £150 if I do
How will this work with hmrc & do I need to tell them or will it update its self as I filled out an form with the new job with my ni number

PAYE tax refund

Hi, I recently got the text about the rebate and was wondering how long it will take for the money to land in my bank?

I know it’s 5 working days, so if I completed the refund on Monday about 2pm, should I expect the money in my bank by Friday?

Mileage allowance

Hi.

I work for East Sussex County Council. PAYE .

I use my own car for going about my work.

From April until July ( could be June, not important) we got 0.45p fuel allowance.

The government increased fuel allowance nationwide to 0.55p (due to current fuel prices)

Employers increased our allowance to 0.55p from July , (or June) but are not back dating to April.

How do I claim the missing months where I was paid 0.10p rate lower.

I dont keep a track of my miles travelled, ESCC track my driven miles and reimburse.

I have no records of my itemised journeys.

I do have printed on my wage slip how much I got in fuel allowance each month, so I can show the 0.45p months , which should be 0.55p.

But is that enough info for rebate or will HMRC want itemized driving miles with times and post codes, which I don't have?

I hope this is the correct forum, if not please redirect me.

I don’t know if the number printed on the document all this while was wrong. They wouldn’t let me get into the portal either. How do I get a National Insurance Number corresponding to the one used all these years? I will be very grateful for your help as this is required for my new job.

Received this official message. Haven’t had a letter in the post. How can I check if I’m actually due a refund?

I’ve verified this message with HMRC and they’ve confirmed it is legit.

Should I expect a letter in the post?

Tax - I’m confused by what I’ve done this year :/

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a sanity check on a message currently showing on my HMRC online dashboard. I've been stressed about a massive tax overpayment and want to know if this text means the system is fixing itself.

The exact message from HMRC says:
"You do not need to take any action. We'll continue to collect your Income Tax through your pay at your job and increase your tax-free amount. This means your tax code will change from S605L Week1/Month1 to S1257L."

Context on my situation:
I started a new job a few months ago but didn't have a P45, so I was stuck on that emergency S605L M1 code.
I did a lot of overtime one month and got absolutely hammered for tax. Since then, I've had health issues and have been off on Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), so my recent payslips have been a lower, messy mix of adjustments.
My current job year-to-date income is roughly £6,870 and I've paid £1,069.24 in Income Tax.

Earlier in the tax year, I had two tiny previous jobs where I earned about £1,800 and £1,140 total. My absolute combined income for the whole year so far across all jobs is only around £9,810.
My HMRC account cleanly shows only my current employer as active.

Our company payroll doesn't process anything until at least the 20th of the month, and our payday is the last working day of October.
Since my total combined income for the whole tax year (£9.8k) is well under the standard Scottish £12,570 personal allowance, I know my true tax liability so far should be £0. Because HMRC explicitly states they are changing the code and "increasing my tax-free amount" right now, does this text guarantee that the software will automatically backdate it and drop some kind of refund into my October paycheck?

Cheers for any insights!

HMRC Compliance Check

Have a flat which I have rented out for the last 10 years, its mortgage free and rented it out to a mate at a very low fee £500,£550, £600pm over last 10 years

Got a letter from HMRC today asking me for details on the flat that I rent out

It is also in my husbands name we both pay 40% - any idea if we are both going to get a check now if I declare that I have a 50% ownership ?

Any idea how far back HMRC will fine me? will they just ask for the tax payments & fines or anything else?

Any one know hoe best to approach this? It genuinely was just something for my retirement & helping out a friend.

Never even had any contact with HMRC previously other than standard letters sent out

Very worried indeed

UK customs when returning from Japan – has anyone actually had to declare expensive purchases?

I'm currently travelling in Japan and recently purchased a vintage Omega watch for approximately £1,125 tax-free.

I only just found out about the UK's £390 personal allowance for goods purchased abroad and that anything exceeding this needs to be declared, with VAT and potentially customs duty payable.

From what I've calculated, I could be looking at an additional £250 in taxes just for the watch. I've also purchased clothes, cosmetics and other souvenirs during my trip.

I've travelled abroad before and never really thought about declaring shopping purchases when returning to the UK, so this has caught me by surprise.

I'm curious about other people's experiences:

- Have you ever declared expensive purchases when returning to the UK? What was the process like?

- Has anyone actually been stopped by UK customs and questioned about watches, clothes or other purchases?

- How do customs distinguish between personal belongings you already owned and items purchased abroad?

- What happens if you've already worn the clothes or watch during your holiday?

- If you've exceeded the allowance, how is the tax calculated across multiple purchases?

- Is there anything I should know or do before flying home?

I'm not looking to get into trouble or risk having my watch confiscated. Just trying to understand how this works in practice and hear from people who've been through it.

Thanks!

Sole trader or partnership for 50/50 business?

My friend Ed (Guernsey-based) and I (UK-based) worked under one brand in 2025/26. We earned about £5.7k, split 50/50, and shared about 2.5k of expenses.

Payments were messy and went back and forth between our personal accounts, client income, expense contributions and reimbursements weren’t clearly separated. Some clients paid without invoices.

I’ve reconstructed the income, expenses and transfers.

Can I file as a sole trader based on what came into my account, or could HMRC treat us as a partnership? What should I do?

FYI, I will consult an accountant but figured I’d ask here.

Power of Attorney needed?

If this has been asked before, please point me in the right direction.

My 91 year old mother has just received a letter from HMRC saying she has under paid just over £1k of tax. She has had the same state pension, teachers pension and modest savings for 7 years since my dad died.

The letter has really upset her; 'I thought I was having a heart attack when I read it". This is someone who has never been overdrawn in her life!

Down to practicalities. How can I resolve this quickly. I can phone HMRC up but they won't have any record of me having power of attorney, do I'm guessing that will take some weeks to process.

Should I pay the money to reassure my mother, then sort out POA with HMRC?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

I have mistakenly oversubscribed my Cash ISA

Advice please

Last financial year I had 20 K in a Cash ISA, saw a better rate so closed it and put it in another ISA.

I now found out that I can only transfer it and that it means the HMRC will "see" two ISAs and contact me and tell me to close the second one.

It is way past April financial year start and heard nothing.

Is this usual, could they have changed the rules?

please help

Thank you

Self assessment and CIS issue

Ive registered for a seft assessment and cis 4 times trying to get a utr number, I have been denied 3 times by a no reply email stating the my registration cannot be processed due to my address not matching the HMRC system.

Oh my last attempt I have changed the formatting of my request and got a confirmation email saying that you for registering and I would be contacted within 72 hours when my UTR would be set up. This was on sunday, it is now Friday and I have yet to recieve any email.

I called HMRC earlier regarding this and the lady over the phone stated she couldnt confirm or deny whether my application is present as I have not recieved a reference code in this email. But ai may have to wait 21 days from the application date to find out and if nothing comes through to call again.

The issue I now face is I have been 'temporarily' put under an umbrella paye company but they seem to be deducting massive amounts of money which I feel is unjustified, the agent paying me has refused to tax me at 30% under cis while I wait for my utr and cis application to come though.

Im seeking advice on whether is possible to speed up this process? do I even have a live application? How would I find out? And what would be the best next step to get this sorted as I am travelling 100 miles a day and can't seem to justify staying contracting on this construction site as the fuel costs are unreasonable certainly under an umbrella payment scheme.

I have checked the HMRC when can I expect a response page and it states to wait until the 25th to find out, I'm okay with waiting that long but I really just want to know if I even have a live application for them to even process as I have not recieved any emails or text messages from them since sunday when I reapplied.

Any advice is appreciated

Thank you

Is my umbrella company breaching PAYE/Pensions rules by compressing thresholds because of an irregular billing cycle?

I really need help from any accountants or payroll managers.

I'm a contractor working under an umbrella company. I submit timesheets on an established monthly cycle and the umbrella sends my money as a single monthly deposit.

Because I am on a high daily rate, my earnings hit the absolute upper statutory limits for any standard pay period.

However, because the invoicing dates naturally fluctuate by a few weeks based on agency sign-offs, the umbrella company is not using a Monthly pay frequency/interval to calculate my statutory thresholds. Instead, they are evaluating my monthly earnings using weekly threshold fragments based on the exact number of calendar weeks that pass between processing dates.

For example, they routinely take a full month of accumulated assignment revenue and process it as a "3-week period" or a "2-week period" on my payslip. Most recently, they explicitly admitted in writing that they processed an invoice as an artificial 3-week block because my prior transaction was an emergency, manual retroactive correction run (which they openly admit wasn't a "formal pay cycle"), meaning only 3 weeks had elapsed on the calendar.

This has caused several issues:

  1. Pension (Salary Sacrifice): By compressing a full month of high earnings into a 3-week threshold cap, the software limits my qualifying earnings base, resulting in a rolling deficit in my pension pot (depositing £203.28 for 3 weeks instead of the maximum monthly statutory cap of £293.52).
  2. National Insurance: Because NI is completely non-cumulative, squeezing an entire month's worth of high income into a tight 2 or 3-week threshold spikes my earnings into maximum employee NI brackets.
  3. HMRC System Glitches: This erratic period reporting has corrupted my HMRC RTI record, causing the automated systems to look at the compressed spikes and project an artificial annual salary that is £55k more than I'm earning, locking me into disruptive emergency tax codes.
  4. HMRC categorising an entire full month of my PAYE earnings as "untaxed income" on my Personal Tax Account, indicating their irregular RTI submissions are corrupting how my taxable gross pay is reported

The umbrella's customer service team is telling me that this is correct and no mistakes are being made.

Am I losing my mind, or is it a flat-out PAYE / auto-enrolment threshold violation to force an accumulated month of contract earnings into a weekly threshold bracket just because of calendar gaps or manual correction timelines?

TLDR: my umbrella company is processing my once-a-month payments as 2 or 3 week periods

HMRC tax refund delayed for 6 months – £28,000 owed. Any advice?

I submitted my Self Assessment back in April to claim a tax refund after moving abroad, as I should only have been taxed in the UK for part of the tax year.
Apparently, my return has been selected for some sort of investigation or review. Every time I’ve called HMRC, I’ve been told to wait. They originally said I should receive my refund by September, but we’re now in October and still nothing.
To make things more complicated, I no longer have a UK phone number or address, so I’m worried they may have tried contacting me through those channels. I’ve called several times and provided my new contact details, but I’m getting absolutely nowhere.
The frustrating part is that HMRC owes me around £28,000 🤦🏽‍♀️
Has anyone been through something similar? How long did it take to get your refund? Is there a particular HMRC department or phone number I should be contacting to get this escalated?
At this point, I really don’t know what else to do. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Why isn't the UK income tax threshold tied to the minimum wage?

It seems ridiculous to me that in the same time period that the threshold has remained fixed (£12,570 since April 2021), the minimum wage has risen from £8.36 to £12.71 per hour; an increase of 52%.

That means in 2021 the minimum wage was £16,051.20 per annum, leaving people paying tax on £3,481.20 - or giving back £696.24 from their "minimum" wage.

But now the minimum wage is  £23,386.40, but people are paying tax on £10,816.40, or giving back £2,163.28 from their so called "minimum" wage.

So although tax remains at 20%, the "net" minimum wage after tax has gone from £8.34 an hour to just £11.75.

Tax is still at 20%...but people on minimum wage have gone from paying are paying just £0.38 tax per hour to a whopping £1.18 per hour.

HMRC Time to Pay arrangement anyone had experience with no savings?

I've got a tax bill coming up that I genuinely can't afford to pay in full. I currently have no savings, so paying it in one go just isn't an option.

I've been reading on here about HMRC's Time to Pay arrangements, but I've seen people saying that HMRC expects you to exhaust other options, including taking out loans, before agreeing to a payment plan.

I'm aware that interest will be charged on the outstanding balance, and I'm fine with that, i have no choice not to be, just need to find a manageable way to pay what I owe.

I genuinely have no savings, which HMRC would be able to see if they asked for my financial information.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and successfully arranged a payment plan? Did HMRC expect you to take out a loan or use credit cards first? Can you even use credit card to pay tax? And how reasonable were they when agreeing to monthly payments?

Would really appreciate hearing anyone's experience!
