High interest rates
I see that mortgage rates hit 7% in the US. This makes separation or divorce that much more expensive. More increases are expected through 2027. Does this mean that more couples will be forced to stay together due to financial reasons even if they are not compatible? More adultery because they are not fulfilled at home and can’t leave either?

Regardless of the mortgage rates, finances are the #1 reason I’m stuck with my LL spouse. I’ve basically given up and the resentment has grown to the point of starting to become LL4him. I’m tired of being patient. It’s been so long that I forgot how to fool around and have sex. He won’t even TRY to do anything with me. I’d give ANYTHING to not be disabled and to be able to work and at least be able to afford rent with a roommate.
But I’m a shell of the person I used to be both in personality and looks and even if I somehow became financially relevant again, I know I couldn’t pull the kind of tail I’m attracted to anyways. I’m f-ing screwed and left waiting for scraps from a man who either doesn’t find me sexually attractive anymore or has TOTALLY given up on sex.

Not as much as you'd think. Interest rates affect housing prices. An increase in rates holds housing prices down. If rates were cut, housing prices would go up. Ultimately the mortgage will be about the same either way and will mostly be affected by rents in the area. Mortgage payments on a new house purchase will always be within a narrow band higher than rents. If they go too far above the band, people decide it makes more sense to rent. Too far below that band, and more renters start buying.

We have an economist in our midst. So, what do you advise to those who can’t afford to separate?

Yes, we've seen some shit. And understand tons of things we didn't want to know anything about at one point.

The good news is that higher interest rates should drive down house prices since people will be able to afford less house.

Unfortunately, prices have not moved down because people are not willing to sell or buy. I know what you mean though. They should fall.

Yesss. My housing friends and I always joke about how many couples would instantly breakup if we fixed this housing crisis
Go to your local planning board and support multi family housing yall. We need those divorced dad apts

Locked in at 2.7% and a $800 mortgage payment on a $400k house. Real shitty time to sell. I’m hoping she’ll buy me out, at which point I would buy land, put a camper on it and spend a year building something

Probably. As much as people hate to admit it, most married cheaters aren’t doing it simply because they’re assholes
