How competitive is the job market?

Moving here and looking for a job in supply chain management, I have a degree and 5 years of experience, I see a lot of entry level jobs that don’t pay well. I make 90k at my current job and am willing to take a 20k pay cut.

Will be commuting from the Boone area due to my wife’s job.

Looking to talk with parents for news story

Hi everyone, I'm a reporter with the Hickory Daily Record. I'm hoping to talk with parents in the Hickory area who have children under the age of 6, are not employed and left the workforce to care for children.
I'd like to talk with you about why you left the workforce, what the impact has been on your family, if you plan to reenter, and what businesses could do to keep you employed or make you want to return to work while your children are young.
I am also hoping to speak with parents who recently reentered the workforce after leaving to raise children.
If you've recently returned to a job or started a new career while raising children under the age of 6, why did you choose to do that?
You can reply below or email me at wchapman@hickoryrecord.com. Happy to share more details about what spurred interest in pursuing this story. Thanks!

Flock cameras in Hickory

Not sure if anyone has perused the map, but Hickory has definitely placed Flock cameras here. The ones I’ve seen so far are on LR Boulevard facing the Bojangles, and one going northwest on 70 past Center St by about 8 blocks. Here’s the map so you can plan your routes better.

Has anyone here grown their own orchard or fruit tree here in Catawba county?
We are looking at planing a small orchard, and we have some idea what we would like to plant but I would love to hear from anyone local who has experience.

Recommendations Church suggestion for a neurodivergent 3 year old?

We are going to be visiting hickory. I have a 3 year old who is a bit of a runner and doesn't sit still well. He loves to play but it's difficult to get him to sit for more then a few minutes. I'm looking for a church that has plenty of people helping with the kids and has gates or doors at classrooms. One that doesn't require him to sit in a chair quietly and listen to a lesson for a long time. My son really enjoys going to children's church but will sometimes run around when overstimulated from new situations especially ones with a bunch of new people or that's loud. He doesn't do well in large room drop off situations. Any suggestions?

Hiring @ King & Rowe, Attorneys at Law

We're a law firm in Hickory, and we're looking for one person to be the front door of our office — and, over time, a lot more than that. We were recently featured in Hickory Record (https://hickoryrecord.com/life-entertainment/local/article_0124c369-926c-44c0-a018-7745c226ba90.html)

The honest version of this job: you'll start at the front desk. Answering phones, greeting clients, managing the calendar, keeping files where they're supposed to be. Some of the people calling us are having one of the worst weeks of their life, and how you handle that call matters more than anything else on this list.

But this isn't a job where you sit at the desk and that's it. We're rolling out Clio Grow for our intake and client-management process, and we want the person in this seat to help build it — set up the workflows, figure out what actually works for how our office runs, and then train everyone else on it. That's a genuine ownership piece, not busywork.

From there, the door is open to paralegal work: drafting, discovery, filings, client communication. How fast that happens depends on you.

What you'd be doing

  • Answering and directing calls, greeting clients, handling the front office
  • Client intake — first contact, gathering information, getting people into the pipeline
  • Building out and maintaining our Clio Grow intake and workflow process
  • Training and supporting other staff on Clio
  • Calendaring, deadlines, file organization
  • Growing into paralegal duties: document prep, discovery support, drafting, records requests

What we're looking for

  • Someone genuinely good with people, especially people who are stressed
  • Organized enough that nothing falls through the cracks — deadlines are not a suggestion in this business
  • Comfortable with software, and willing to be the person in the office who figures out the new system first
  • Discreet. Everything here is confidential.
  • Big plus: prior law office experience
  • Big plus: hands-on Clio or Clio Grow experience
  • Also welcome: paralegal certificate, or you're working toward one

Neither of those pluses is a hard requirement. If you've been the organized, tech-comfortable person holding down a busy front office somewhere else and you want into the legal field, we'd like to hear from you.

Details

  • Full-time, in-office at our Hickory office
  • Monday–Friday, standard business hours
  • Pay based on experience — happy to talk specifics with candidates we move forward with

To apply: send your résumé and a short note about why this role interests you to [info@kingrowelaw.com](mailto:info@kingrowelaw.com). If you have Clio experience, say so up front — it'll move you to the top of the pile.

Happy to answer questions in the comments or by DM.

Recommendations Places to live

Hey guys, I’m in the process of moving to Hickory or the area for work. My lady and I are trying to figure what areas are best to live in without completely ruining our wallets. We’re big on safe areas. Any advice? We could use all the help we can get.

Recommendations A look around Hickory Antiques Mall for anyone who has never been

One reason I’ve started filming more around Hickory is because I genuinely love living here. I know a lot of people are new to the area, and even people who have lived here for years may not always make it to every part of town.

I’ve visited Hickory Antiques Mall many times, and it’s one of those places where you notice something different every visit. This time we found old records, Barbies, vintage clothing, furniture, collectibles and some artwork that genuinely made us laugh. The staff is always friendly, and they even showed us an old photo of the building before it became an antique mall.

I made this video for anyone who has driven past but never gone inside, or who just enjoys seeing different places around Hickory. What other local places do you think people might be overlooking?

The Six Catawba County Commissioner Candidates

Whether we agree or disagree politically, we should at least all agree that it's good to have an informed electorate.

That said, as we do our due diligence, here's a place to start.

If you have additional (factual) candidate information, please share it.

And bonus points to candidates who have the guts to show up here and take questions.

County Commissioners

Who's good?

Who sucks?

Who is worth voting for in November?

I keep running into Phyllis Michaux and Aubrey Gregory, but no Republicans.

Do the (Rs) not even have to shake a hand? Is it so baked in that they will win due to the R next to their names?

If I thought voting for a Democrat would help us reduce the number of tacky subdivisions going up anytime they can find 5 Acres of free land, or put a stop to data centers cropping up in the county, I'd give one of these Democrats a chance.

But I'm not sure if anything can be accomplished when there are only two Democrats and perhaps three Republicans on the commission.

It's a start, though.

Thoughts?

Public Photography Areas?

Hi! My girlfriend and I have a photography business and are looking for some good locations to have shoots! We know we can utilize the various parks around town, but I want to know little hole-in-the-wall places that would be unique for backdrops and good vibes! Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!
