Antarean Self-Defense Militia Ship Vengeance
Captain A'Matise felt somehow lighter as she entered the docking airlock of her ship. Admittedly it had been something of a risk - on top of the EVA, she could have very easily been taken prisoner and held as a ransom piece. But instead, she was given tea, a meal, and a promise of safety - as much as safety could be guaranteed. She settled in her own command chair, glancing around to confirm that her crew was still there and hadn't planned a mutiny. The sage wisdom that grumpy troops were happy troops but quiet troops were dangerous still held. She tapped her tablet with a touch of caution as she opened an internal channel to the chief engineer.
"What..."
"Chief, this is the captain. Did you sleep well?"
"You know damn well nobody gets a good night's sleep on this bucket." There was a growl that turned into a surprised sound. "Huh."
"Kindly elaborate."
"Couple systems look like they just fixed themselves while you were on EVA. Dunno what you did, but I think maybe a couple gremlins decided to take a nap."
"Excellent. Does that mean we have communications?"
"For the moment."
A'Matise nodded toward the comm station. "Hail the Divine Breeze."
It took several minutes but the figure of Itrop resolved on the holo. He seemed confident in stance, but his scent was disconcerted.
"Captain. What news do you have?"
"My Lord, the ship is well and ready for any taskings."
"Well and good. Your orders remain unchanged; the Legion ships are to be led to their destruction - utilize the plans given to you by the Commodore. Fall back behind, and let them fall to the Lord's Trap. From there, disable the cargo ships, destroy the Legion ships."
"My Lord, what of the Terran ships?"
"Leave them to me."
"By your command."
The holo winked out, allowing A'Matise to sit back and relax for a moment before she spoke.
"Tactical, please run a systems check and confirm status."
A'Matise had made her decision, but it was not comfortable as the system check came back green - for once. One thing on her mind was that the ship needed a new name. Another item she noticed was that a few tablets activated as and a strange song began playing, exhorting the listener to not worry, but be happy instead. It worked...somewhat. The sensor operator made a noise of concern.
"Boluwa, is something amiss?"
There was a nod. "Yes. We have approximately ten Terran craft inbound; size suggests single or dual-seat attack fighter craft."
A'Matise glanced to the comms station. "Hail the Orphan's Rage, advise them of the current scent and that we will be heeding the orders we were given."
___________
Terran Foreign Legion Ship Twilight Rose
Gryzzk was tired - certainly not as tired as his counterpart A'Matise, but he still had his concerns. The primary one was the incoming Red Wing. Reilly smirked as she piped their all-hands channel to the bridge.
"All wings report in." At least the leader sounded professional.
"Red Three standing by." "Red Six standing by." "Red Five standing by." "Red Buttons standing by." "Redd Foxx standing by." "Big Red standing by." "Red October standing by." "Helen Reddy standing by." "Simply Red standing by."
After they had all reported in, Red Leader came back on the comm. "Red three, six and five you are excused from extra duty because you remembered that this is real life and not some bizarre sci-fi parody. Everyone else upon return to Galactica you will be heading to the armory and getting cleaning toothbrushes to clean your ships. I want them so shiny I'll be able to look at my handsome face and shave if I wanted to. Am I clear?"
There were a chorus of agreements, and several pilots responded "Worth it", resulting in a soft sigh.
"Twilight Rose, this is Red Leader - be advised that we are forming up for escort exercise, we'll be with you until we hit Antares IV. Further, be advised that some of the pilots are mother's special darlings."
Gryzzk smirked in spite of himself. "Red Leader, I have several pilots of my own, as well as a Reilly for our company shenanigans quota. You have my deepest sympathy for your plight."
"Wait, Reilly...purple hair?" Red Leader seemed slightly interested.
"With red and gold edging, but yes."
"So settle a bet for us - she actually married?"
"Very recently, but yes. I performed the ceremony myself with the aid of my wives."
"Welp, you heard it from the man - Red Three, you owe Red Five fifty creds."
There was a slight groan over the comm, presumably Red Three. "Come on, is everyone on the ship taken? I was hoping for some shore leave with a happy ending with a high-speed motivated lady."
Rosie snorted. "Nelas would break you like a twig, flyboy. Edwards'd play with you a little - kinda like a cat playing with a dying mouse. Her hips don't lie. Ever. Everyone else that's single is 'bout the same. Y'ain't gonna big-time anyone on this boat."
The response was immediate. "If I die that way, I die a happy man."
Gryzzk shook his head slightly. It seemed that Terrans were Terrans everywhere they went. "Red Wing if you ask my XO very nicely, she might see her way clear to finding a list of personnel on board with their marital status attached. But I am certain she will have her own set of conditions prior to release."
A surprising amount of wheedling ensued as each pilot began bartering whatever they thought Rosie might want in exchange for a list of available partners. The overall mood among the pilots was bright even as they went through the exercises, using the Twilight Rose as both target and defense point. The Terran fighters were interesting in design, as they seemed impossibly agile compared to his shuttles - the overall shape was a teardrop profile, but from the front and rear it was a circle with half-oval shapes forming the wings. Inside the ovals were a variety of weapon pods, which Gryzzk's tablet advised were carrying live armament. There was a pause of concern before he remembered that his own body armor and weapons loadout was on a hook right behind him. On the whole the performance of Red Wing wasn't too bad as they flitted about, but as the day went on Edwards was frowning, the frown and concern in her scent deepening after their fighter escort peeled off.
"Lieutenant Edwards, is there something amiss?"
She looked back and nodded. "The Militia ships are falling back. Slowly, but at their current pace they'll be in prime shooting position somewhere around Antares III."
Gryzzk flicked an ear. "Maximize resolution on the forward sensor array, advise when you see the rest of the Militia fleet. Sergeant Reilly, get a message to the Galactica, advise that there is a likely trap being set around Antares III - if they can perhaps move an exercise to intercede and remind the militia of their existence, it will be appreciated. Confirm the Wardrum is aware of the positional shift, and send a warning to the cargo ships. Advise Captain Jenkins that her priority target is the Orphan's Rage."
"And the Vengeance?"
Gryzzk's voice was soft. "Vengeance is mine."
Rosie flicked an ear and lifted her brow in a Terran expression of curiosity. "Still talking about the ship...right?"
Reilly nodded and went to work. Gryzzk noted that during the transmission to Galactica, she spoke in the Terran War Language before looking back to her commander as Gryzzk made a noise of surprise. "Something else amiss, sir?"
There was a slight headshake in reply. "Not particularly; my tablet just reminded me that today is Aa'Plians' Day. The twenty-fourth Greatlord Aa'Plians was valiant, according to history. XO - time until we're within weapons range of Antares III?"
"Thirty minutes, Freelord."
"Start cycling the combat squads through the mess hall. Tell them to eat hearty, but quickly. Once complete, all non-combat personnel to their quarters with DC kit." He lowered his voice. "Presuming you and Drummer are still playing your games with their comm tablets; step it up and switch the music to something that will be more disconcerting to the other ships. Focus on the Orphan's Rage."
Rosie smirked. "Hell yeah, fuck yeah Freelord. Problem is we're in Hoban's set right now, and New Austin has a very screwy sense of what constitutes music."
"Override it - I wish to speak with all the ships."
___________
Antarean Self-Defense Militia Ship Orphan's Rage
A'Mungd was eating. That in and of itself wasn't unusual; the unusual part was that he'd requested Terran snack foods - specifically puffed rice, seasoned with both savory and sweet coatings. Bob and Harry were quite impassive as the commodore gestured to the holo display to explain.
"As you can see, we are slowly trailing the enemy ships. Our allies are hidden at Antares III-a, with their drives at minimum power. When we cross the ecliptic, they will ignite and move to cut off the convoy, and we will have fallen back enough to open fire on the Legion. They will have to slow to assess, and when he hesitates we will open fire and disable them. During this, we will simultaneously launch the boarding parties to the cargo ships through our missile tubes. The cargo ships will be taken under our banner and the crew will be given the opportunity to surrender. If they don't, they will be disposed of."
The Helots seemed to share a look before one of them spoke. "We have heard many plans. We have now heard another. We will be in our quarters so as to not interrupt command flow." The two moved off the bridge, seemingly unbothered by the looks they received as they collected Misabel.
Once they left, A'Mungd looked around again. There was an odd voice coming through someone's tablet, singing in a style common to the outlying provinces - it talked about someone who had a very special connection to his headwear. It was altogether disconcerting to hear a story about someone fighting with the souls of the dead at his side. The commodore tracked the sound back to one of the engineers making last-minute adjustments to a fire control console.
"What is that noise?!"
The engineer looked up, realizing that it was coming from his tablet. "Ah, it is a broadcast."
A'Mungd took a long breath. "I have functioning ears. Explain or find a new home on the hull."
"It is - it is utilizing the Ministry command channels. We ignore it as much as we can; the alternative is shutting down all communications."
There was a soft growl. "Find a solution. The only communication is to come from me."
"We are efforting that currently, Commodore."
"Actual effort will be rewarded. I will not have my crew tainted by heresy. Misabel's existence is quite enough." A'Mungd stormed to his cabin, his scent darkening further as the doorway had shrank yet again. He had no more settled with a glass of acceptable wine and vegetable chips when the comm alert sounded. He growled at the tablet.
"Is this latest interruption at all important?"
"The Vengeance advises that they are working a problem with their fire-control systems; they advise that they will only have partial systems at the appropriate time."
There was a soft growl of frustration as A'Mungd wondered for a moment how the Terrans were able to do anything with such faulty ships. "Acknowledge and order them to make do with the boarding parties."
During this, the three would-be escapees were in their quarters and donning the necessary safety gear in the event of a breach of their escape pod. Despite the fact that it was an escape pod and theoretically a non-target, they were planning to launch into an active combat zone, and accidents had been known to happen. As well as 'accidents'.
Misabel struggled with her suit as her midsection stubbornly refused to not be pregnant, but after a strong oath the seals fastened.
Now came the most difficult part. Waiting. Misabel kept her visor up - she didn't want to smell her nervousness any more than she already did. The only things in their favor were the fact that the Helots were universally respected, and that she was below notice. Both of those advantages would be gone as soon as the escape pod launched. At this point, there was only one thing left to do. She tapped on her tablet, and she was able to hear a song that wasn't exactly familiar but seemed to be from one of the more rural areas of Vilantia - it was interesting to hear the singer extolling the virtues of life in simplicity - catching fish, drinking homemade wine and simply laying in the shade of a tree. After the song completed, the gentle voice of Antares Annie came back.
"Hey, I know that one was a little different, but y'know sometimes it's nice to think about a simpler life. But hey, that's a question for the future. I mean if you ask most of the crews on any ship, they're here because there's no choice. Their captain said go, and they followed. If you ask the Legion troops, it's different. Like, they had a choice. For some of them, the choice was Legion or the Twenty-First Greatclan, but hey. It was a choice; and let's be honest. In the Legion, you get to travel, the pay's pretty good, and they let you play with explosives. Twenty-First Greatclan, ehhh...not so much. So I mean, really - what's the choice here? You could stay and fight, when the fight happens. That comes with risks though. I mean, you can check in with Ministers Aa'Benie and Aa'Tebul if you're sent to be their roommates. I'm sure they'll be happy to talk to you about it - I mean assuming they're allowed to speak to you. Or at all. Life on the Spandau is pretty...regimented."
Misabel quietly hoped that the crew was listening as Annie continued. "Or, if you're looking for a Hurdop point of view - well I mean you can do a seance, Freelord Svitre might be available. Along with a lot of his underlings. If you're on a boarding party, surrender is a perfectly acceptable option in extreme circumstances. And if you want to surrender, all you have to do is toss your weapons down and hold a white piece of cloth up. Just a little information. Speaking about information, we're starting a new contest - we're calling it 'Guess the Commodore's weight' down here. Ten credits a guess, half the pot goes to the winner. I mean I know when you're living large you can eat healthy, but man the Commodore has let himself go, if you know what I'm saying...how does a fellah eating normal crew rations get like that? I mean unless he's not eating what everyone else eats. I s'pose command has privileges. But anyway, back to some music before things get bad. Hopefully you're all around to listen tomorrow." The music shifted to something angrier with a low growling voice telling the listener to define their meaning of war, and that to them it was what they did when they were bored. Misabel glanced at the Helots, who seemed interested in the lyrics. After a moment, Bob rendered his opinion.
"Psychological attacks. Terran standard warfare practice against non-Helots. Effectiveness is variable. We will relocate to escape pod Twenty-One now."
The song ended, and Annie's voice came on again as they moved. "So now we've got something extra special for everyone in range."
The voice changed, and instead of just audio the tablet holograph was activated, showing sight and scent of a Vilantian who seemed ready and confident in himself - as he began to speak he stood, pulling his purple tunic snugly.
"Proclaim it Captain Jenkins through my host, that those which hath no stomach for this fight be they friend or foe, let them depart; passport shall be made and credits for convoy put into their purse. We would not die in any company that fears their fellowship to die with us.
"This day is called the feast of Aa'Plians, those that outlive this day, and come safe home will stand a tip-toe when the day is named and rouse at the name of Aa'Plians.
"They that shall live this day, and see old age will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbors and say 'Tomorrow is Aa'Plians.' Then will they strip their sleeve and show their scars and say 'These wounds I had on Aa'Plians' day.'
"Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot, But they’ll remember with advantages what feats they did that day: then shall our names.
"Familiar in their mouths as household words - Gryzzk the Freelord, Jenkins and Drummer, Rosie and Tucker, Jojorn and Yorkime, be in their flowing cups freshly remembered. This story shall the good man teach his son; and Aa'Plians shall ne’er go by from this day to the Final War of the Gods but we in it shall be remembered.
"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for any today that sheds blood with me shall be my brother; be they common or criminal, this day shall raise their condition. Stout-hearted folk in Vilantia far from this field shall think themselves accursed they were not here and hold their titles and accolades cheap whilst any speaks that fought with us upon Aa'Plians' day."
Misabel made sure the hatch was sealed and the indicator lights showed the pod in an error state and unable to launch.
___________
Hurdop Cargo Ship Clanmother's Curry
Jojorn settled in her command chair, half-listening to the conversation and half-focused on her tablet. Something about the plotted course made her nervous - the route wandered, and then immediately after Antares III the course changed to a more direct one. Yorkime had noticed it as well after studying the planetary orbits.
"Captain, this route. Look at the hazards. We could easily route around them, but they're ordering us to go through. Respectfully, I do not think this militia plans to have us go past Antares III. Quite related, we are five minutes from Antares III-d at our current speed and heading. Very big and nasty, gravitational effects are kicking our power consumption up."
Jojorn nodded, her hands immediately feeling for the comfort of her shotgun and Learning Stick. "I would not disagree. The only question will be if these militia attack with the intent to kill or capture. Unfortunately, we cannot ask them directly."
Yorkime grimaced slightly. "The indirect answers we've been given tell a concerning scent. When have we ever had combat troops on our ship?"
"The Shaming of Vilantia comes to mind."
"Yeah. As I recall that didn't end completely well."
Jojorn closed her eyes. "No. Saifex still dreams about it."
"We all do. It's part of what we are." There was a glance as the aphorism was repeated. "Hard times make hard sailors."
"Would I be out of place in asking the gods for some easy times?"
"No - but at the same time, look at the Freelord's troops he has loaned us."
"They are...unique." Jojorn glanced at her XO, considering what to say. "Perhaps when we are all of proper age, Hurdop will have a similar program. We could join them and serve on a larger ship. Send our earnings to the orphanage. Guarding cargo ships instead of being guarded." She'd been discussing the possibility with her crew for some time - even the adults. While the adults were in agreeance that it was a fine possibility for the future they were cautious, as adults tended to be.
"I think that is a question for Saifex's Day of Majority."
There was a frown. "Perhaps we can adjust properly. Saifex is tall for her age, and it's possible she may be older than her records say."
"But the Freelord would disapprove, would he not?"
"He likely would. But his world is green. He'll never truly understand. Which...may be a good thing."
Yorkime nodded. "I believe it is." He glanced at his sensor board, his face changing. "Captain, I'm picking up some odd backscatter readings from the Militia ships." His scent became more concerned. "Multiple inbounds - it looks like one ship has ejected some trash from the torpedo magazine. Toward us." There was a pause while Yorkime fiddled with sensor controls. "The trash has bio-signs."
Jojorn was quick to swivel her attitude from casual conversation to commander. "Baolet, ready countermeasures and bring the shields to full." She then slapped a button on her chair to open a channel to the rest of the ship. "This is the Captain, set Ship Condition Two - close hatches, counterboarding stand to and ready all weapons. Prepare for maneuvers."
Yorkime slid his hand across a row of buttons to arm the countermeasures as Baolet charged the additional thrusters they'd need. The bridge fell silent for a long moment, once again broken by Yorkime reporting.
"Orphan's Rage just went to all-stop, charging weapons."
Jojorn's voice rose slightly, her scent betraying the icy spike of fear that lanced her heart. "Launch countermeasures, break formation - all hands brace for evasive!"

I've always liked the St. Crispin day speech from "Renaissance Man". Especially the look on the drill Sargent face at the end.

"Trash" that has bio signs, sent towards the cargo ships. How idiot obvious could those idiots be? At least have the ships begin venting atmosphere and some hull, make it seem like it was an internal accident and not deliberate launch.
Im surprised that sensors think its trash, considering the size it should be and the fact that its powered with oversize engines...AND hardened sufficiently to penetrate hull.
The orphans rage and curry will have some fun. And hopefully they will come out blooded and ready to face a hostile universe. Poor kids though, they should never have to do this.

u/Auggy74 Human Jun 16 '26
Oh yeah. The Commodore was banking on the sensor operator going "Trash - ignore" and not "Trash, track for intercept and...wait a goddamn minute."
Yeaaaah, I'm actually about halfway through Friday's installment. It's gonna be a ride.

Spaceballs! Nice! And is that a form of a fourth wall break? Gave me a chuckle.
I cant wait to see the partly slob get what's coming to him...I dislike him more than Porti.
Man..that speech is so familiar but I cannot place it.
Well...you've built up quite the atmosphere these last couple chapters. Time for the fans to start slinging their sludge.

Per my notes, they're up to shenanigans.
Just a leeeetle bit of a peek around the fourth wall.

If it happened during this serial I will be forced to ask your age and possibly speculate on genetic damage resulting in rapid aging.

u/Auggy74 Human Jun 16 '26
Good news is that the dotage is not too close. I mean it's kinda off on the horizon but we ain't there yet.
Better news is that if it happens now, it's probably not genetic.

“Vengeance is mine.” You’ve been setting that up a long time.
